MYSTERY SOLVED!!! THANK YOU Morgan, you have solved a mystery lingering in my sewing box for YEARS. My grandmother taught me to sew and when she passed, I was given her old sewing box. She lived in Japan for many years so some things were from her time there. One is a vintage SEWING BIRD. The writing on the box is all in Japanese and the translations did not help me decode what the item was. I almost fell over when I saw you using this exact tool. Thank you for solving the mystery!!!!!! PS Sending my deepest sympathy to you after the loss of your dogs. I know the pain well, I am so glad you have your sewing to bring you comfort

This was a mystery for me as well, though I came across it for different reasons. I'm so glad Morgan explained it! I was reading an antique book about antique furniture and it casually referred to the little birds women used to help them sew when discussing sewing tables

I'm so glad to see this comment, I was going to write in if my own asking if they were used in Western history at all. I've been beginning to sew vestments in a Japanese Buddhist lineage and have a book on sewing Japanese garments as my guide which illustrated usage of a third hand and we even happen to have one in my temple's sewing collection. They're super awesome little devices and I appreciated seeing someone actually use one in modern time!

So sorry to hear you sad news. I don't know if you've heard this before but I hope it helps..."There is a cycle of love and death that shapes the lives of those who choose to travel in the company of animals. It is a cycle unlike any other. To those who have never lived through its turnings and walked its rocky path, our willingness to give our hearts with full knowledge that they will be broken seems incomprehensible. Only we know how small a price we pay for what we receive; our grief, no matter how powerful it may be, is an insufficient measure of the joy we have been given.” ― Suzanne Clothier

A short hooded cape was the first real garment I ever made and if you’re ever looking for an excuse to make even more of them I fully recommend making one in a waterproofed fabric. I used a waxed cotton and it’s such a useful garment, just covering your head and shoulders with a regular coat or jacket underneath keeps you surprisingly dry, also wearing a hood in the rain really helps with that mysterious wanderer vibe. x

I've heard that they could be used to tie the hood onto a belt when not in use!

I've just finished knitting a baby hat that has a liripipe-like extension. The instructions then tell you to put a little knot in it, but you still end up with a little beanie with a stem. With hindsight, and if I'd had the right thickness and shade of green wool I think making the hat itself in red and then doing the stem in green would be very cool, like a cherry-hat.

adding to what I wrote at Patreon now after watching the video: firstly, I had fun watching you remove the kitty off of the hood only for her to return right back and then assist with the pinning and stitching. As my husband said when I showed him: "at least she doesn't leave fur all over it." Which is in fact a huge help, I have to set my crochet down when the kitty invades, otherwise the project is embellished with fur. And secondly, my jaw literally dropped at the effect of that way of inserting the tail to the top of the hood. It looks so much better when worn, I absolutely love it!

In French, "little red riding hood" is called "le petit chaperon rouge." I've been confused about the "chaperon" part because that's not a word that comes up if you look up "hood" in a French dictionary. You just explained it lol. Thanks! This solves the mystery.

1: The Skoldnehamn hood is somewhat easier and quicker to sew (if you are in a hurry and/or less skilled) with the gores places at the front and back, not the sides, may date from earlier that the Herjolfsness garments (1060's vs 1300's) and has no liripipe but does have a sewn crest on top and down the back a bit. If you have at least 4 ft (120cm) wide material, you can get 2 hoods from a yard (90cm-ish) of fabric. 2: A LOT of medieval clothing was lined with linen or hemp, only the poorest of the poor would have wood directly against the skin. Linen and other plant fibers almost never survive in the ground. 3: Most of the Herjolfsness garments were cut or pulled apart to be used as shrouds - what we see today is the result of a lot of work, finding and reassembling the garments from fragments. And what remains is a fraction of what was originally there, before archeologists got involved, the water front was known for numbers of skeletons wrapped in cloth just lying on the beach where they weathered out of the graveyard. Refer to 'Woven into the Earth' which came out years before 'Medieval Garments' 4: In 'modern costume talk', a 'Chaperon' is the hat that results from placing the face opening of a hood on top of your head, then wrapping the liripipe around the rest of the hood to secure it all in place. Eventually the Chaperon was made as a dedicated piece of headware and could not be used as a hood anymore.
