My only concern is that lowering the barrier to entry on high performance bikes by adding DCT will enable those who literally do not know how to ride a motorcycle to start rolling down the road faster. Having to learn a clutch is a barrier that I think filters out the most low-effort would-be squids who will never get an endorsement

@@bishopmabry2054 I'm not entirely sure it really applies here. Many modern bikes have quickshifters, so you don't really have to use the clutch, but it allows you to be quicker, and I don't see people complaining about qs's.

I have a '21 africa twin DCT and my list of dont likes is far shorter than the list of likes. The main problem with the DCT is you can't disengage the engine from the driveline once it hooks up. That makes low speed maneuvers a bit of a lurch fest. You can't feather the clutch or just plain pull it in and coast to a stop, etc. I think that's the only thing I don't like about it. Everything else is a plus over a manual in my experience....

I own a DCT africa twin from 2020 , about the engine braking situation, one thing, there is a option to increase or decrease the engine braking and probably you have the less braking engine option, that is why you have the user 1 or user 2, you can select how much power, engine brake, wheelie control on the menu to suit your own taste.

I'm 71 and only got back into riding 3 years ago. I love the DCT on my Rebel 1100 with the African Twin engine. The bike is light, easy to handle, and in city traffic, the DCT is great. On the highway, cruising at the speed limit with cruise control for long rides is also a huge plus. Although I am only 5'7" I found I had to put on control extenders to stretch out a bit. I also have added a Puig windscreen which works really well at highway speeds. For additional comfort, I added an Airhawk inflatable cushion to the seat. To make a long story short, for senior riders like me, the DCT turns the bike into an "old man's scooter":-)

Then he had me borrow it for a weekend, showed me how to adjust settings for power, engine break exc. I was sold after that weekend. Over 13k miles later still love it ride it all over Colorado, ohv, highway. Great bikes. I am lucky enough to still have a grom and yz250x to shift. @@nogerboher5266 I did the CO and WY BDRs no issues. Just put in manual mode. I had a lot of similar thoughts til I rode one. I ride it off road regularly. There’s a learning curve just like on any bike, but there’s no loss of control you can hold gears, go to neutral or use a controlled amount of rear brake under power to get the same effect of feathering the clutch. I would also make the point that using the paddle shifter in manual is fast and can be easier on difficult terrain. I’m not saying it’s better, just different and as with all bikes the rider is the limiting factor.

I had a similar problem on slow turns in S2 and to an extent, S3 as well. On an AT. It would hold 2nd gear even when it was clear it's not going to work, and then downshift while I was already leaning. If I had a manual and made a similar error, I'd let the clutch slip a bit instead but DCT doesn't like that.

I love the convenience of my 2019 Honda NC750X DCT. On twisty mountain roads I take over the decision making and shift with the pushbuttons so I get engine braking before corners instead of unwanted downshifts in the middle of corners. Sport 3 comes pretty close to what I want in the mountains though. In city traffic I’ll punch the downshift button for engine braking or positioning in traffic but mostly let the machine save energy with its early shifting in drive mode. I get about 75 mpg (US gallons) that way. Have taken one long tour and will do more. I would definitely get another DCT bike if it was the right one but I also ride a Harley Dyna Lowrider so I’m not adverse to shifting and don’t absolutely require the convenience. Just nice to have.

Why do guys who have never ridden a DCT do reviews- I have had 2 Goldwings with DCT’s have ridden everything from small dirt bikes to Harley’s and the DCT is so great on highways including twisties- you can override the auto scenario and down shift - up shift whenever you want or put it into full manual and you paddle shift at will - no different than what quickshifters are trying to accomplish. The only scenario I have no idea about the DCT’s application is on aggressive dirt riding, no clutch to slip in those certain situations. As well it does add weight which on a gravel road ok but not desirable on single track. The DCT is the future for most applications no doubt- unless you are set in your ways and want a manual transmission- clutch

For my "fun" bike on the road, I'd opt for a traditional manual, but for commuting to work in stop and go traffic I would LOVE a DCT. That NC750X is amazing for that. I actually enjoyed the DCT in the twisties, I didn't have to worry about what gear, shifting in a turn, feathering the clutch... it was weird to get used to though, but ultimately this removes a big barrier of entry into motorcycling for some. And if it's not for you, that's fine, at least we got options! The only thing I hate about DCT is it causes all these gatekeeping types to come out and say it's not a real bike, or you're not a real motorcyclist if you don't learn how to shift, or shifting is the real experience, blah blah blah. I say we need the innovation to keep motorcycling relevant and attract new riders, or our kind will get fewer and fewer. More options is just better for everyone, so don't hate on anyone who likes something different. Props to Honda for continuing to provide innovation and options to us! Great video Spite.

I like that folks are developing technology. That’s not going to do anything except to help riding overall. (A rising tide raises all ships, after all.) That said, this seems like yet another excuse for people to pay extra money to say, “I’m not actually riding a scooter!” In the US we have weird hang ups about scooters. “I want more control,” folks say, and there’s a seemingly intentional inability for naked/adv/cruiser bikers to remember that there IS, in fact, a difference between mopeds and scooters. …but after processing superiority, folks will go out and prove their superiority by buying a fancy clutch like this, all the while pretending that a CVT on a scoot doesn’t also have a fancy clutch. We all ride the same wind, whether we’re members of the “fancy clutch club” or not. Just saying.

And, for full disclosure, I also own a CVT equipped scooter. Over the years, I've owned over 30 bikes, including 9 Harleys, 4 Goldwings, 2 BMWs, and others; I don't see than any new bike purchase in the future would be a manual transmission... and that's not based on being a geezer (which I certainly am), but on understanding what DCT brings to the ride.

Most common motorcycle injuries are foot and ankle injuries. Dct lets a lot of riders keep riding without having to switch to a cvt scooter or trike, or an electric. For daily commuting it also makes a lot of sense. Say you want to ride to work but like me you work long hours and are on your feet the entire time. Dct means you can ride it kind of like a scooter mainly using your hands. As you really don’t need the rear brake if you are taking it easy.

Further, I think you need to play more with the various modes as I think you may have been in one that didn't match with you. The DCT bike is infinitely variable in its ability to adapt to a rider. You just need more time with the DCT and its modes. Are you usually a sports bike rider by default?

It has been mentioned in the comments already, but ride modes are more important with a DCT than they are with a manual. A lot of his complaints are based off presets and likely incorrect settings for what he's asking. I have a Rebel 1100 DCT and its a completely different bike depending on the settings. I use custom mode 2/3/3/1 for daily commuting and it's an easy-going cruiser with plenty of power for highway passing but not so snappy that's hard to ride very slowly in parking lots or heavy traffic (also gets 50mpg at this setting). Now change that to "Sport Mode" or 3/1/2/3 and the bike turns into a snappy (somewhat heavy) naked bike that is constantly trying to stay in the high-rev range. The two settings are so different that the bike doesn't even sound like the same bike between them... He spoke of it not engine braking when it wanted it to. This can be adjusted by changing the third setting or "EB" and the fourth setting or "D". Something like 3/1/3/3 would keep the RPM up and increase the engine braking to its most aggressive. There is no stock setting like this, you would need to use the custom setting.

I currently ride a 2019 Goldwing Tour DCT and it has been awesome. I just turned 100,000 miles on it this week. Maybe the Goldwing is programmed differently but my Sport mode is aggressive and very responsive. It holds gears both up and down to give you max acceleration and good engine braking. Tour Mode of course relaxes that a bit. I think if you had time to tune the User Modes more on the press bike you were riding, you would be amazed at how competent the system is. I'm 66 years old and have been riding since I was 14 so of course all my previous bikes have been manual transmissions. My adaptation to the new DCT from my previous Goldwing (288,000+ miles) took about 2 weeks and then I never thought about it again.

When I rode a DCT Honda for a couple days, I stayed mostly in manual mode, and loved it. It's great eliminating several semi-complex physical actions needed every few seconds (depending on where and how you're riding, of course), and made riding considerably more fun. Now, I'm not saying I would want DCT on EVERY bike I own, not at all; but as a technology, I really like it, and I'm really looking forward to Handa's new 'E'-Clutch. Kudos to Honda for daring to try something new..! Also, it's worth remembering, when DCT transmissions first showed up in cars, everybody said 'oh, it's just something for really hi-performance sports cars, a really specialized set-up, certainly not beyond that, it's practically Formula 1 technology!' Now, of course, the vast majority of cars that are automatic use DCT's, and there's a LOT more automatics being sold than manuals. So I say, best not to be too quick to judge, one day not too long from now motorcycles might be using DCT's at the same proportion as cars right now..!

I have done maybe 300000 miles in my life, and only about 50000 on a 6-speed manuals, big engines like Triumph 1200 and Victory Freedom 106. These "big" bikes are darn slow and too much hassle to shift, especially in the mountain passes. Everybody gushing about good quickshifters, well mine's ideal...a CVT. I wrote to CFMOTO hoping they have the balls to release something that Victory would not - I mean the Vision 800 concept (a mean-looking CVT bike that solves many typical issues). Keep my fingers crossed, I would buy in a snap. I pity those who do not know how much freedom and unrelentless acceleration a proper CVT paired with a mid-sized para-twin 270 deg can do . Yamaha should also design and release MT-Max 700 based on their CP2... The future is exciting, once they figure out how to explain it to the market. Now it is like "symbian smartphone era" in the 00's before iPhone, I feel...Perhaps some innovations in CVT would further make the point. For now we have the genius of J.Costa.

I want an NC750X DCT just to ride to work. I think it'd be great when I'm all tired and beat up from a long day to just cruise home without shifting. I've driven over 1.5 million miles in manual transmission tractor trailers and let me tell you I love the new automatic trucks. I'm completely over shifting ANY gears...

I've got the NT1100 sport/tourer with DCT. It's a very competent and satisfying bike to well,,,,, sport tour. It's odd for me having a motorcycle that looks so far to be a "keeper". Before the NT1100 I had the XADV 750 with DCT. Needless to say I'll be a DCT fan as long as I'm on 2 wheels. It's that good.

I had a Honda Talon UTV for a while, which utilizes the AT DTC trans / motor. HATED it. But, admittedly that might have been more related to the suspension being really stiff, and the traditional cable operated throttle. bouncing around on the trail caused the buggy to be real choppy, jerky, and gross. DCT searching for gears in automatic mode made it miserable. Can find used DCT ATs in my area EVERYWHERE. Was pretty telling IMO. Glad you did the ride Spite! I still think the base '16-19 AT w/ a built suspension would be a hard bike to beat--even today, but my Vstrom 800de is good'nuff! Go ride a Vstrom and tell me what you think Spite!

I have a Rebel 1100 DCT. My commute to work has a couple of slow speed tight turns (practically, U-turns). The DCT sometimes shifts mid turn and it's very unsettling. Honda should have a steering angle sensor on the frame's steering stem to prevent up-shifting after a certain angle (not lean angle) and less than a certain speed. i.e. >±30°@

I think a DCT option suits certain motorcycles better than others. Goldwing is an excellent application for it. Rebel 1100 also a suitable place. Maybe the NC750X is also acceptable place. Africa Twin? Eh..

I see DCT working for proper applications. Every day bikes like the NC750, Rebel 1100, and Goldwing are fine and would probably be nice (TBH, I've not tried it yet). But the Africa Twin? I intend to use mine in the dirt and have one of the apparently rare '22 non-DCT Adventure Sports, and I find the clutch to be a critical traction aid when off-roading. With that being said, I've heard that the traction control is good enough to set it where you want and pin the throttle and the bike will make it happen. Full disclosure: I'm not a fan of automatic transmissions in cars, either.

Only thing I don't like about DCT (aside that I enjoy shifting gears, blipping/rev matching, etc., otherwise I may as well ride a large cc scooter), is that DCT is horrid at slow speed maneuvering, and they have a reputation of burning out the clutch if you practice a lot of slow speed exercises.

You have to learn how to do it... its only "horrid" as much as anyone thinks anything they don't know how to do is hard. I find it quite easy after a bit of practice. The clutch doesn't burn out easy... it does burn out when people like that one instructor used it for weeks on end for hours upon hours every day on a very heavy Goldwing. I've done many hours of slow speed practice on my Rebel with no issues, I just don't do it non stop for 6 hours straight... and ignore temp warning lights... people can burn out manual control clutches like that too.

I have the AT 1000. When I was thinking about buying I took the DCT version out for a ride. Its great insofar as it worked really well. But and the big, but for me. Why do I want an automatic bike and the extra weight and complexity associated It's a solution to a problem I and most people here don't have. Maybe for a big tourer Its a good idea. And it's an option on the nx 750s and the Rebel 1100. Just my 10 cents worth on the subject.

Interesting, but not for me, then I don't like automatics in cars either. I'm 61, been riding since I was a kid. I like changing gears, blipping the throttle on an aggressive down change, I won't even have a quick shifter on my bike. I only have one modern bike, a 2022 Pan Am, the army green version, and my other bike is an 1988 Low Rider Sport, hotted up these days and with a sidecar most of the time, I still love to ride it because it is very raw, no ABS or TCS. I love the Pan Am, I use it as a sports tourer and commuter in the city, I have taken it off road, but it is a bit heavy for off road.

I have a Rebel 1100 DCT. One thing I don't like about it is how jerky the throttle can be at low speeds. It's either closed, or trying to haul ass. Is the Africa Twin kinda the same? Wondering if it's a DCT thing, or just their tuning of the engine. Also, for the DCT being a thing in general, I think it's great for people who can't/don't want to have to manually shift. I've seen a few people get the Rebel 1100 because they have injuries or disabilities that would stop them from being able to easily ride a traditional bike. It's good to have as an option for people who want it. The E-Clutch is definitely gonna be interesting. I wanna test ride a bike that has it. I'm currently selling my bike so that I can get a manual bike and get that engagement from manually shifting again.

I rode AT with DCT and did have the same problem with it. As I was going to a turn, it would regularly be in too high of a gear and low RPM. Now if this happened with a manual, I'd put a lower gear before the turn or ride the clutch a bit until I start accelerating from the turn. DCT does not do either, instead option to put lower gear when you're already leaning, upsetting the bike and also changing the power of the engine due to different RPMs. Even in S2 it was not exactly eager to downshift, especially to 1st. Now maybe I shouldn't have taken it to a really technical road (

I think you missed one big audience : Europeans who commute in the city. We have a shit load of red lights here. And from my point of view this is why Honda created the DCT, for people who want to use their big bikes to commute. The Africa Twin with the right add ons could be the do it all bike. Sporty enough, off road, cruiser AND commuter thanks to DCT. DCT was always targeted for Japanese and European markets where people shift more often due to smaller busier streets and numerous red lights.

I was looking for a used Africa Twin, a lot of the offerings here in germany are DCT, probably like 50% of them. I guess it's because there aren't as many offroad tracks around here and most of the AT buyers use them for long distance touring. Also, they are probably on the older side of the spectrum, so I guess thats why you would choose the DCT. Still want a non DCT, and it is a bit annoying if they only write DCT in the description of the bike, but not on the title of the listing 😂

I think they should have programmable modes where for example custom sport mode where you can choose at what rpms it shifts up, same for all other modes That's the only way your bike would really feel like your bike imo. an adjustable delay should be there too, less delay if you want 'less control', more delay before auto shift kicks in if you wanna maybe manually shift up

Think the dct takes some tuning into. In its stock mode it’s not hugely inspiring to a sporty rider. Also all Hondas power settings are back to front so 1 power bar is full power and 4 bars is the lowest power. It looks like you spent a lot of the video in low power on the highest engine braking. It’s so much better after you’ve lived with it a while. I like that you’ve ridden it and done a video I just wish you had more time or instruction on it to get the most out of it
