I'll share my story. I'm a BJJ blue belt but the situation happened summer 2020 when I was 4 stripe white belt. I was on a bus and some crazy guy started punching an old man lying on his sit. Despite being the smallest guy (1,68m 60kg) there I was the only one that stepped in. I bodylocked him, took him down and pined him until the cops came. The guy was bigger than me but not athletic at all. Lack of confidence is a huge thing. It really doesn't take much to defend yourself (or someone else) against an untrained guy.

This reminds me of a story very recently when I was jogging and somebody rode their bike on a path which was just for jogging and walking. There was even a sign but this guy endangered my life so I had to push him off his bike. His jiujitsu wasn't so good on his bike. I think I taught him a lesson and won't see him commiting crimes again.

1 second ago The inate reaction one has, i.e. scared/not scared, is just this, an out of control thing. In my opinion, the only way to stear your inate response away from "fear", is to get used to it, expose yourself to it. In your instance for example, I would imagine that competing in Muay Thai, MMA or boxing would go a long way to get you used to an environment where another person wants to inflict DAMAGE on you. In my personal experience BJJ is not enough, any sport where you can tap out at the first sign of pain won't make you "tougher", you need to get hit in the face and in the liver for that. And I'm sying this being a BJJ black belt myself.

It’s not insecurity, it’s a final acceptance of reality. I have trained BJJ for years and striking arts also and the more you train the greater your realisation of the dangers of violence. The other side of the coin is never training and having an elevated opinion of yourself, believing you will somehow turn it on in the correct moment. Much better to be trained.

100% agree and want to add 1 more thing. Be mentally prepared most of all. You can be the best fighter but if you freeze in an altercation all that goes to shit. it happened to me with my daughter while walking. A thug faced us and walked towards us ready to fight for no reason. I did get scared. Long story short I was able to walk away and deescalate the situation. However, after this I felt like a coward because I felt I should have done more. I spoke to my jiu-jitsu coach and military friend about it because I felt bad that I panicked. They both made me realize that I did do something "deescalate move on and my daughter was safe" the mind needs to be trained too. BTW I train in jiu-jitsu and have trained MMA and Muay Thai in the past but still I panicked!

You did right, dude. It's so much more important to avoid a fight if at all possible. If you mess that guy up and get sued or go to jail, that affects your daughter. If you or she is threatened, that's different. Protect family at all cost, but just walk away from some thug clown unless violence is unavoidable. Don't feel bad at all. I would do the same.

I'm a boxer and former judoka, i don't train judo anymore. I was quite good at it but back then i used to be scared to end up in a street fight because i didn't know how to strike. It's true that when you don't know how it feels to be punched at it can make you freeze and scared and now that I'm almost three years deep into boxing all of this went out the window, I've never felt more confident now that i know how to strike and that i have some basics on the ground. I often try to spar mma for fun with some friends, and this helps me a lot too. I wanna be way better on the ground and I'm looking for a gym to start my grappling journey. Now that I'm able to defend myself and feel confident about it, i realize the importance of being able to protect yourself

You're delusional if you think that Judo is somehow less effective than boxing in real life. I've sparred with guys that would give skilled people concussions with their osoto-garis, on MATS. I do Muay Thai and if i had to fight either a Boxer or a Judo black belt on the street i'd pick the boxer any day of the week. Boxers will knock you the fuck out and might break your jaw/nose but a good Judoka can cripple you for life. There is a reason why Judo is a young mans sport. Judo is not BJJ, Judo is extremely explosive and physically demanding if trained seriously and most people don't even know how to break a fall on the street. But i kind of get where you're coming from and why it's good to pick a striking art as a secondary art to your grappling. Judo is definitely giving you the tools but the mentally is not really pro-violence, it's main goal is self-improvement and mutual benefit. And everyone should know how it feels like to punch and get punched otherwise your mind is going to make out all different possibilities of how much it will hurt and what's going to happen to you yada yada yada. But that's not a reason to drop Judo and make it seem like it's not working for real fights.

I don't train judo anymore but not because i think boxing is more effective, I just stopped training judo years ago because I had to choose between that and soccer as a teenager because i didn't have enough time to fit both in my schedule. And then, years later I started training boxing and just starting training ju jutsu/Grappling. Also judo helps me a lot with bjj and when i wrestle, I'll always have love for judo ! But yeah judo is very effective and i think i am still gonna train it here and there to revive some reflexes and skills i had back then ! I hit on two girls on a busy street one Saturday night near the clubs downtown. Lots of people walking around. One random guy took offense (I suppose) and rushed in to “save” the helpless damsels in distress from mean ol’ me (I’m 5’8 on a good day, 170 lbs. Homeboy was a lean 6’3” maybe 190 lb?) He stood there like a vulture hovering but I just ignored him and kept talking to the women. Then he said, “you just tried to hit her!” (I did nothing of the sort, my hands were neutral) and he pushed me violently sending me 6 feet and I landed on my bent ankle, twisting my ankle. (Took 2 months to heal). I walked away, but not out of strength, I wish I could have destroyed the guy but I walked away because I was afraid to fight

Lucky for me my moments of cowardice weren’t taped, but they might as well should’ve been…it all lives rent free in my head and it gets harder to cope with with age. Then I train hard and develop injuries and on and on. Life just keeps kicking my ass, and dealing with the negativities is overwhelming. These setbacks bleed into other things, they effect your confidence and you miss out on what could’ve been a much better life. Heed this man’s advice he’s speaking so much truth here

Ive been doing jiujitsu/grappling/wrestling off and on as a 45 year old hobbyist. It has built my confidence on keeping cool in uncertain/uncomfortable situations. I do believe I need to do more kickboxing/striking classes even if its just once a week. I find doing footwork and shadowing boxing/hitting a big helps as far as getting my muscle memory and conditioning. Having good training partners you trust is something I am grateful for.

Go to a class, even the skills you learn in class cannot always be replicated in real life due to adrenaline, nerves, the fact you could actually get hurt and/or die. I highly doubt a VR game will have any benefit whatsoever as theres no consequences to failing or losing

Totally agree with you coach. John Danaher said on a post recently that in order to succeed in smth fight or whatever 2 things must go hand in hand: the ability to pull the trigger and the skill set. I know guys from my gym who go hard in sparring,even kickboxers but have chickened out in a street fight scenario.

About six weeks ago I got stabbed in my back three times when a group of guys tried to beat up and rob me and a friend, which resulted in my spleen being removed and severe blood loss, which sounds bad but actually could've been a lot worse. The guy who stabbed me didn't show his knife at first which is why i tried to defend me and my friend against one of the guys attacking us whilst turning my back on this guy. I did competitive point fighting Karate in the past and had one or two "street" experiences which gave me a bit if confidence which is why I chose to call their bluff. What I didn't expect was the level of cowardice and ruthlessness of the attackers where they would, in addition to outnumbering us, choose to hide a deadly weapon and use it as soon as there is any kind of opposition to their attempt at intimidation. I still think it was the right desicion to try defend myself and my friend but I would definitely caution anyone in this kind of a situation to be very aware of this danger and to not turn your back on any of the attackers if you're facing more than one. The stabwounds were bleeding a lot but they didn't severely hit vital organs, so with adrenaline running through me I was able to run away and call an ambulance. My friend gut hurt as well after I was able to flee but luckily we both didn't get fatally wounded or disabilitated at least so far. I can definitely tell you that if I hadn't tried to defend myself and the same result would've happened I would feel even worse about it. So this definitely rekindled my want to be able to defend myself and as soon as I'm healthy again I will be going to a local Muay Thai Gym and I would advice anyone to take self protection seriously because you never know what kind of curveball life with throw at you.

Appreciate you making this video. BJJ is a fantastic personal development tool and great for dealing with drunken idiots, but let’s not pretend that it’s the be all end all for self defense. You definitely need it in your tool belt for sure, but staying on your feet in a real life situation and STAYING CONSCIOUS takes precedent. The objective should be to hit them with a quick 1, 2. Turn your feet the other way, and run. NEVER WILLINGLY TAKE THE FIGHT TO THE GROUND. You have absolutely no idea who you’re dealing with. He could have 10 friends around the corner and they run up punt your head like a football, pull out a knife and stab you, jump you, get run over by a fucking car… But yes you absolutely must learn to throw and take punches that is non negotiable, and get a concealed carry if you can.

I do kickboxing. Green belt. And we do alot of shadow boxing, alot of sparring. And most of us role (light sparring) with everybody yellow or black belt. Taller/smaller. Shows how different it is when you get hit by bigger man. And we do sometimes little grappling. Takedowns/Armbars/basic ground skills. *Fight starts standing position, not from full mount* need skills from both of the world.

When I was 17 with my friend who was 18 at the time (I was about 5’11/150LBS at the time) but had been training MMA since I was 13. Two big bodybuilder looking guys forced their way into our cab outside of a nightclub. We then got out and they followed us out of the cab to fight immediately the one guy came at me with a big overhand. I counter left hooked and BRUTALLY knocked him out unconscious I stomped on his head to make sure he wouldn’t stab me after. The other guy picked up my friend and slammed him on the concrete. My friend who was also training at the time put the guy in a triangle choke. I kicked the guy in the ribs and my friend strangled him unconscious we also gave him multiple finishing blows to ensure he wouldn’t retaliate with a weapon. If we weren’t training at the time we could of likely been killed. Each guy easily had 70+ lbs on us and was likely in their late 20s. I know my life was saved that day from MMA

I took taekwondo when I was a teenager. I have a blue belt in taekwondo. I trained 2.5 years before quitting. My interest in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is because I did not learn ground fighting and submissions in taekwondo. Mainly what I know is how to kick, punch, and block. I took two private lessons on boxing and to get better at my forms before deciding I knew enough to defend myself and quit. I would immediately confront someone that pushed me off a bike. Most likely they wouldn't want to fight, but I do know how. I had trouble with my knees when taking Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. I started strength training and improved my cardio. I plan on going back in March of next year. I was only a white belt with one strip when I left. I wanted a minimum of purple belt when I originally started. Most likely I will train to get my black belt this time. I just can't justify the amount of time I put into getting ready to go back if I don't. I also like the idea that there's always more to learn in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. It will give me something I can train in the rest of my life.

I was singing the praises of martial arts the other day as a piece of what professor John Vervaeke calls an 'ecology of practice' in spiritual/psychological health. Many people practice yoga, tai chi, etc., for their movement/physical piece but I find martial arts to have much more direct grounding in the reality of the external, physical world. My interlocutor said that he believed yoga to be more applicable to everyday life because martial arts is training for a rare violent confrontation scenario like the one you're describing with your student. My counter to this- which I didn't bother making- is that (legit) martial arts practitioners simulate combat in every aspect of their training. The other- training for a street fight/random attack- is the stuff of self defense classes, which are notoriously ineffective, at least in my opinion. This is because they are myopically focused on a situation that really can't be trained for. By contrast, combat sport competition can be trained for very effectively. The magic trick here is that grappling and striking in the combat sport arena can be transferred pretty well onto the 'self defense' scenario, mostly because most criminally-minded dudes out there have little to no experience with what fighting is. Our job is to have more than them.

Well said. I am a blue belt in jiu jitsu but could see a big hole in my self defense if I had to stand with someone (especially someone trained). I'm on my 5th boxing and muy tai class. My goal is to get into the ring and spar as quickly as possible. Yes, I want to learn striking, But ultimately I want to be able to move and evade strikes to set up a takedown, because once that happens it's game on.

@@C0d0ps wow, 8 months flew by. didn't realize I've been training boxing that long. After 8 months we had our first official sparring today. We do spar at then end of class but today was only sparring. The class took turns and each round was 1:30. First round was jabs only, second round was 1s and 2s. And third round was everything. It was a blast. I got hit and landed a bunch of shots. The one thing I wanted to learn I feel pretty good about. I can now comfortably engage with someone on my feet, close the distance at the appropriate time then clench to work my jujitsu. Oh and if I chose to I can also trade, but I have a top position jujitsu game so would use that in a real life situation

I assume swimming and running is not the same condition. Maybe just look for a speed bag? I love calisthenics and gym, so I would take any exercises there that compliments striking.

Maybe a year ago when i was training i would be able to defend myself now probably not because im out of shape and havent been training, it sucks but it is what it is. Luckily my family members are good at rule number one in self defense, stay away from potentially dangerous areas or situations, everyone lets everyone else know whos going out and when to expect them back. Our area isnt too bad but has its bad eggs.

That's a good point, BJJ alone won't help much on a hard floor vs multiple attackers who will kick you unconscious if you're on the ground, works great on a padded mat floor, in a controlled environment with no strikes allowed though. Really wonder how well Gordan Ryan would do in real MMA.

Lets leave multiple attackers out of this because you are still fucked with boxing in that scenario. A hard floor isnt a big deal its just uncomfortable, just like punching without gloves is dangerous. There are pros and cons to striking and grappling, it really depends on your surroundings and what type of violence this is. People always act like 5 bloodthirsty people are gunna swarm you, most defense is more mundane.

I love jiu jitsu and I know how effective it is but when I trained only in muay thai it built a bit of confidence in me. When I trained in karate it was OK for defence but if you want to attack and protect yourself on your feet muay thai is amazing. Keep training all forms as there all effective in there own ways

Sound reasoning. And likewise I tell all young boxers to wrestling and grapple bit. Pummelling, arm drag drills, pushing drills… that all translates well into balance and control in the clinch

Hi coach .i am 42 years old blue belt.i been in a street fight 2 Weeks ago and he wooped my ass.he challenge me with a punch and i run towards to him to make a double leg.and i land in the floor and he was free to do anything he wanted.he punched me twice ..i haven't punch in my life...😢😢 I must train punches and kicks

This is why I recommend Muay Thai, for the ultimate art for self defence. It literally came from war, You NEVER want to be on the ground in the street fight, or in War. Muay Thai also teaches you how to use weapons, grab a bottle hold it in a Muay Thai stance and throw an elbow, it's a sword now.

The only way you can get confidence to fight is to get into a real fight. Otherwise no matter how much time you spend in the gym no matter what techniques you practice you gonna freeze during fight time

Boxing is the best. A quick cross is the best thing to master. Problem with grappling is you could be out numbered and get stomped once you're on the ground. One hard punch ko can scare off other attackers but once you're on the ground anything can happen and it's good to be ready to run after you throw some punches (if you're outnumbered)

I would say Visualization is probably the best way. Visualize yourself in these dangerous scenarios. You have to do this regularly and try to feel the feelings of yourself overcoming these situations is probably the best way.

36 and done striking since I was 18 and I've had multiple concussions. I want to swap to bjj and just do bag work and shadow boxing but my biggest worry is if my timing and reflexes go(for self defense) Would my experience, shadow boxing and visualization be enough for my defence?

Bjj and karate black belt here. I love the idea of a bjj/mma fundamentals program being based on a self defense paradigm like how Gracie combatives is designed. Then the next level being more sportive

I've purposely studied, trained and even built my own boxing gym in our home 2015 and trained for a few years before I even stepped onto a BJJ gym. I still train boxing along side my BJJ. I don't even spar, but I don't want the first time I've ever thrown a punch to be during a street altercation in the street lol. I've had fist fights with my head caved in since grade school so I know how it feels to fight with fists and I know how it feels to be hit so it's not entirely a foreign subject lol. I love grappling and all things Jiu Jitsu, but I strongly believe in striking; Boxing, Muay Thai, TKD etc.

This is the reason I quit sport bjj and started Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. The Gracie system is the only system of bjj I know of that addresses punches from the various positions. I think Henry Akins and Matt Thorton address it also but Henry thus far doesn't go into any detail and Natt only so far only shows what to do with punches from being mounted. My first bjj instructor would have us put a face mask and gloves on and train but he never showed us any strategic techniques to deal with punches. I never felt really confident if I had to defend myself until now.

Maybe its controversial to say these days, but its also important to have at least some basic familiarity and training with firearms. Knowing how to safely operate a pistol, shotgun, and rifle and getting over the initial fear/timidity.

In animal kingdom, the confidence and bluff is evreything, even if you do know something, it gives the animal bluffing like ohh wait i might get hurt because hes not backing off. This guy is standing his ground and trying to fight back.

we organized a concert with jeru the damager, and one guy was super massive, kinda fat and drunk, went up to the stage, and Jeru stoped rapping, he was pulled away, and started harressing and went aggressive on one guy of us, we called him always twiggy, no one was helping him, all where watching, and i just backed him up. As well as other occasions, where guys where abusive towards weaker ones, people have no currage

What could have been worse was reacting out of your anger and wanting to go teach some random guy a lesson and he has a firearm. Drop the ego and let violence go. Violence begets violence. Defense is defense....and the first rule of defense is to get away from the threat. Not chase it down with your student. Work on that ego. Maybe your chances are better in Canada but in the US running up on someone is a roll of the dice. I agree, be able to defend yourself. But avoid retaliation and emotion.

I'm going to sound like a pussy, but also learn how to RUN! I was in a situation recently where I was running on a canal and a group of teenagers tried to pick a fight with me. There were more than 10, so no amount of martial arts was going to help. I came away unscathed, much of it due to being a high level former middle distance runner!

Nope. Be ready to defend your wife, but what if you scrap with this guy, he bites you and gives you some disease? Don't mess with people that have nothing to lose. If he tried to strike your wife, then yeah, neutralize the threat. If a crazy guy insults you, just remove yourself from the situation.

Well, technically he did assault your wife. But what's the point of fighting someone who is likely mentally ill or strung out on drugs? Your wife is being very unreasonable here. He probably had some type of weapon on him too, since he has to protect himself in the streets.

Lol, if you twist your knee, you twist your knee. That's the ACL gone. Whether you wrestle or not. You will probably have stronger knees but knees can't withstand twisting and usually in basketball if you twist your knee, it happens when you're muscles are not tensed in a way that would protect it from torsion.

I don’t know if there is much to learn in terms of how to defend against two knife attackers; I don’t see any single person being able to defend himself against that (two assailants wielding a knife); it’s just a matter of how fast you can run really
