This lens isn't the latest or "greatest" but for video shooters, it's definitely one to check out. Especially if your camera doesnt support focus breathing compensation.

Like the compactness of your review. Had the both sigma 1.4 versions of 35mm but sold them both. Now back to this little baby. It’s so fast and the minimum focus distance is very helpful

I sold this to get the 1.4 Gm. I should've kept it. The gm is better for photos but the focus breathing is terrible for video. The 35mm 1.8 is way better for video and gimbal work. It's also a nice street lens because of it's size.

Ive done opposite after owning gm 35 for 1 month i had nothing but problems with video and yes focus breathing was most important factor hence why i sold mine!

@@Arri. same reason why I am not buying the 1.4gm and instead getting this. I have the 50mm 1.2gm it angers me that sony gave a big middle finger to videographers in their flag ship lenses. Its beyond annoying the focus breathing on 35mm gm looks like a zoom lens 😂

I love using the 35mm 1.8 for travel videos and packing light. Definitely has a spot in my bag

The lens is good, that is for sure. It is sharp, has good build quality and it is good for focusing in video mode. However, there is 2 things why it just doesn't attract me at all: 1) There is no rubber gasket on it for more than 700€. That is just ridiculous. Even the cheap Tamron primes at f/2.8 for about 200-250€ have one. If you pay this amount of money, it should really be standard. 2) I don't like the form factor. It is very straight, somehow it just doesn't feel like I have a proper grip around it. I prefer a more curvy form factor as you get, for example, with the Tamron 35/2.8 or the Samyang 50/1.4 II. Just feels better in the hand.

I've been using the Zeiss 35 1.4 since 2017. Love it, but thinking of downsizing for overseas shooting. The size difference is amazing.. I might test it out before purchasing.

hi there. i dont do video. Aside of build quality, what else that GM has better than this lens? I have budget for GM but Im wondering if I should take this lens instead. Im casual photographer that mostly shoot while traveling or family events.

One thing that isn't mentioned a lot is that it also has a super pleasing image with some background pop that's very reminiscent of the Zeiss look. For video, this guy is actually better than the Gmaster IMO.

FE : full frame lens E : for APSC body or cropped (by 1.5x) if mounting on full frame body

BTW, this is almost exactly the same size as the 1.8/55 except that the 55 uses a 49mm filter whereas the 35 uses a 55mm.

Thank you. I would really appreciate it if Sony updated this lens to a G build like the FE 20/1.8 G. I have this lens and the bigger heavier GM f/1.4 and really need both. I don’t want a slower f/2.5 like the other small G. Still want an f/1.8. That’s my feedback. By the way I’m not a videographer. Take care.

@@ziavlogs6367 Glad to help! Whats your budget? For portraits, you'll probably want to start with primes instead of zooms. For primes on the lower end, the Sony 85mm 1.8 and Sony 35mm 1.8 are my go-tos. For the higher end, adding the 50mm 1.2 (or 50mm 1.4, haven't used it as I have the 1.2 - but have heard great things) or upgrade to the 85mm GM. The 135 GM is a fantastic portrait lens but seems like a little overkill for Instagram.

People are telling me the 35mm 1.4 g master is a photography lens and not for video. And all the reviews just cover photos. Is the 1.8 really that much more appropriate for video? I’m looking to make the best decision here and for longevity and quality I wanna get the g master. But I’ll get this one if I need to. As you can see, my current shots with my iPhone are very close up. So I’m a little lost with that because I noticed when I go from photo, to the video mode on my iPhone, it crops in. This kind of scares me because it makes me think that right now I’m able to get objects really close to the camera and I got spoiled. In fact, I was wanting to get things even closer but if I’m correct on my thinking, the video on iPhone is cropping in, therefore, making objects appear closer than they are. That means the minimum focus distance of this 1.8 being 8 inches, that’s gonna be lie double the 4 inches I’m used to. Any suggestions on how to combat this or proceed? I’m new to cameras because all I have is iPhone right now but I’m looking to get an A7C. To achieve the same thing I’m getting right now, what I need to get a zoom lens and just keep it permanently zoomed in a little bit? Would that give me a better minimum focus distance since it’s zoomed in? Or does it not work that way? At that point would be an advantage to getting a ZVe10 with a crop sensor? Or am I still at the mercy of the lens? I put on the camera regardless? Or does that crop sensor help you get closer to the object. I suppose it’s kind of all the same, therefore I could always just use this lens, 8 inches away, and then crop in with my software after the fact. If that’s all my iPhone is doing anyway just in real time. It just makes a difference though, because if I am looking at the monitor on the camera, if I’m holding the object away from the lens, I can’t tell myself what the shot will look like after editing, and I can’t see the product details to comment on in real time. Or maybe I will find that 4 inches and 8 inches isn’t all THATTTT much different. Either way, the g master will have an even farther minimum distance so that’s holding me back from the g master sadly. Focus breathing prob isn’t much concern for me since my content is highly edited. Will be noticeable on live streams though.

That said, do you think this is a good lens for my type of videos? Most specifically, referring to 35mm? I want the field of you to be the same as what my iPhone is right now and I think it’s probably around 38 currently? 24 might be too wide and force me to redo my table and set up and I’m worried it might distort the product? But now I’m curious about 50mm but maybe that’s not modern enough.

@@grimmwheeper update, two days ago, I finally got my lens 😂 Yes, it took way too long... It was apparently out of stock, and they had to order it directly to Sony. Anyway, it feels amazing on my hands 😍 The metal is really great, and it's almost impossible to hear the lens focusing 😳 never saw (heard?) anything like this.

There was a different one of these 4 or 5 years ago that had oss? it had tons of aberrations did they update and fix it?I watch christopher Frost review of one a few years ago and close up it had linear aberrations colors real bad.
