As a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and producer this was a great enforcement of my ideals. Especially since Superunknown is my biblical standard front to back. Kudos for this great interview. At 50 I have an intuition my best work is ahead of me as far as a personal best rather than commercial. Michael has produced\involved with more favorite records than any other producer alive or passed.

This man is my spirit animal. I have been having the fight about AIFF files on my computer since CD's came out. No WAV's no MP3's - the only music on my computer has been directly pulled as native files from CD's. His take on mindset and the stories we tell ourselves and how they can make or break us is amazing. I now have a new person to add to the list of people I would like to have dinner with to pick their brain. Sure, I love a lot of the music he had a hand in creating and guiding but his philosophies are inspiring. I ordered his book while listening to this interview. Thanks for posting, for feeding him excellent questions and caring about music on a level that reminds of being in the 70's and devouring liner notes.

What an amazing interview. The second part about inner barriers and fears is the best I heard from Michael Beinhorn, from many interviews. As a musician, I think I know that it can take a life time to realise what is going on, and connecting with your deeper feelings, removing all head talk and expectations will enable you to get the true self out, and bring it into the world. If you touch one deeply, out there, with your music, your job is done, as Michael says. Thank you for great interviewing, I will pay more attention to your channel.

Never judge a book by it's cover is not the same as taking a listen to a demo from a band that has no idea what they are doing or even more importantly what they want to do. This guy has worked from ozzy to the TRHCPs. He's obviously incredible at what he does. If I was(still) a recording artist I would be so grateful to work with someone with this much insight. I woke up to the beginning of this with my headphones already on. I'm wearing a TRHCP T-shirt for the very first time in my life, I put it on last night before going to sleep) and listening to him talk about Mother's Milk, I already knew that's what he was talking about. On cue I have OZZY Live at the Buddakan coming up next to get moving. Life is very serendipitous. I had a cat named FLEA for 18 years and just watched a 90s Pepper performance of them doing a Donna Summers number and all of this back story really shows you how much a producer/engineer influennce has over the outcome of a triple platnum album that is totally different than what the band, record company the band and the fans could ever fathum but genuinely love it.

Sadly in the current state of affairs it's getting harder and harder to "be compensated" for producing or engineering music recordings. There is almost no chance that any but the most famous of artists will come within a stones throw of recouping what was an average demo budget in the 90's from streaming services. Top that off with the fact that if they've entered into a 360 deal with a management or record company the artist can't even make the financial case for having a well produced record to earn touring revenue and merch sales off of. There are some who will, and it was always the case that very many didn't make a living off of their tremendous efforts and talents, but it is the worst it's ever been since the early twentieth century now.

Famous bands with drummers that could never have made a record with Michael: The Who, The Stooges, Alice Cooper, the Sex Pistols, White Stripes, Ramones, the Bangles, Black Sabbath - and many more. Sometimes i think that flaws ARE the character of a singer or musician, otherwise you get more generic tracks - which was the game back then to have hits.

That second half of the interview was a much needed kick in the ass to change things up and to keep on keepin on. Definitely going to go back and rewatch often because I've been in such a lighter mood because of it😊 Also the Kimock interview where he talks about not being as happy as he used to be.....then goes on to talk about his friends death....a major car accident ect REALLY made perfect sense how life can change a person's personality (which is happening to me right now) I'm 54 and in a weird lost space currently, and listening to these interview s help me sort and procees my own life in super helpful way. There's no difference in WAV and AIFF. Both are lossless 48khz. The only difference between the two is that AIFF contains metadata, WAV doesn't. I also hate Microsoft, but PCM didn't do it. 😉 Amazing interview.

158:08 not only do you have access to 3 million songs but everyone is listening to the music on these awful cell phones and headphones. Gone are the days of those large cabinet home speakers that were so prevalent in the 70s and 80s. Some people buy home speakers.. and yes they reproduce the music okay, but those separate subwoofer for units just don't resonate the same way as woofers in a three-way cabinet speaker. People don't literally feel the music like they once did.. and neighbors are way too sensitive to noise and they complain. In short people are not rocking out to music at home like they used to... It changes things.

Also artist used to spend over a year in a studio creating an album... Record companies used to fund that.. they don't fund that anymore... And many musicians don't have the patience for it.

Didn't realise Bill Laswell ripped off Michael? Worked with laswell in his studio in west orange 1999..he was a strange dude for sure...it didn't work out great but he made $150,000

I'm thinking of all the great bands who would've had their drummers sacked for not being good enough or being boring if Michael Beinhorn had been the producer- Velvet Underground, White Stripes, Buddy Holly And The Crickets, The Damned, Sex Pistols, The Clash, Sonic Youth, Pink Floyd, The Yardbirds, MC5, Mothers Of Invention, The Cure... come to think of it Mitch Mitchell played some sloppy untogether stuff with the Jimi Hendrix Experience... It's not about the drumming, it's the overall feel of the band that matters and not all bands are good at laying down their parts one at a time. Maybe if Beinhorn had realised this and recorded the rhythm section all together so they could play off each other he'd've got better results a lot quicker. If you keep making people play take after take they won't get any better, they'll just hate the producer. Or maybe he should've just stuck to being the synth player with Material

A good producer is someone who gets the best out of a band or an artist. A bad producer is someone who sets themselves above the artists. If you look at Beinhorns catalogue, he rarely does the same bands twice. I believe the answer in what I think of that arrogant douchebag lies there.

My brother committed suicide. He definitely wasn't weak, he was overwhelmed with a lifetime of being beaten down by our father and probably self-medication. Not sure where you're getting your information from, that suicide is born out of weakness. It's born out of illness, fear, sadness, overwhelm, and probably many other related emotions. It's sad when someone takes their life, not pathetic.
