As a musician, singer and songwriter myself, the first time I saw Fanny play...I was blown away. They had top notch musical chops, vocals and the songwriting was steps ahead of most of their competition. Unfortunately, many listeners take a very surface approach to a band's lyrics, especially back then. And for some reason, even though these 4 people could PLAY, a lot of people never got much beyond the idea of 'oh, look. An all girl band'. It was like a band of only women was some kind of gimmick, when Fanny's actual gimmick was simply incredible musicianship and songwriting.

I used to play music with June’s brother in the 1980’s. He did a lot of work with live sound as well. I remember him talking about his sister June and how he had reverence for her but also how she was very strong and tough. He basically let us know that June expected you to bring your A game when you worked with her. Hats off to you June for all you bring and this is a great interview.

Nice interview with June Millington. I have followed Fanny’s career since hearing their first album, and have come to the conclusion that back in the early to mid 70’s, the world just wasn’t ready for a band as GOOD as Fanny...Here we are, 50 years later, and people are FINALLY catching on to them! What took so long? Fanny paved the way for The Runaways, The GoGos, The Bangles, Vixen, Suzi Quatro & all of the other women musicians who have followed their trail...

Growing up in Sacramento, I became of the Millington sisters around 1965. They were in an all girl band called The Svelts. I woukd see them perform around town and thought they were very talented. I never saw them as being good for girls.’ They we’re as good as many Sacramento bands..periods. In late 1965 I became part of a band under the management of Dick Laventin Productions which The Svelts were part of. I never got to know them as within months the whole management fell apart. That summer I joined the army. Around 1969 someone mentioned a band called Fanny. He showed me the album cover there were the Millington sisters, Tgey were signed to Apple records. I felt a sense of pride. End note, I had a crush on Jean. She was absolutely gorgeous!

My first reaction to the name “Fanny” was it’s not a good name for this great band! I think it cheapens their image even for the loose days of the late 60’s early 70’s. Would’ve been nice for a name of distinction to match their superiority as a band, male OR male!

Luckily for me when Cleveland had the original WMMS "Home of the Buzzard" with all the cool DJ's they played "Charity Ball" and I was hooked. I bought that album then searched for anything else they might have done and found "Fanny". I must have been weird for the times because I didn't listen to them and say "they're all girls so they suck", I said "Holy Snikes! This band ROCKS!" I saw them open for Canned Heat in San Antonio (around 73-74) and was ecstatic as they were my favorite band. It broke my heart when June left before "Rock and Roll Survivors" and then the band broke up. I introduced so many people to their music and still do! Luckily I bought the boxed set to get their music in CD to PC form, found "Rock and Roll Survivor" on CD and recently purchased "Fanny walked the Earth". Love you June! I was 20 when I found you guys and still listen to this day. I always thought you guys rocked HARDER than male bands.

One thing I never understood is WHY Warner Bros never released a live Warner Bros Radio Show on Fanny. Had they done this and put it on one of those Casey Kasem type radio shows (or Wolfman Jack's radio show or Westwood One), I believe that would have broken this group nation wide. Richard Perry should have released promo albums to the radio stations across the country of Fanny playing LIVE. They didn't do it, and to me that was a major mistake.

They did do a live radio show at one time because I have the CD from that called "Fanny Live." I can't remember what city it was in.

I found it interesting that June made a point about boys coming up to her before, after shows and some trying to get intimate. As girls are attracted to male performers so boys would naturally be attracted to female artists. The power of rock performances is sexually stimulating. would it not be odd that after a powerful performance, the audience would be uninterested. As far as racism in the Philippines, I guess it was because she was biracial and native Filipinos were the bigots. All that tells me is that racism and bigotry are common global experiences committed and experienced by many groups. Here in the US the media paints the white supremacist as the racist when in reality that hateful action can be exercised by any group worldwide.Its just not a white thing but a part of human nature that must be rooted out.

Bill Burr, of all people, has sent me down a Fanny rabbit hole. Yeah, the name sounds weird to my British ears (we have a different 'adult' definition of the word) but it makes them seem even more rock n roll. It gives it a provocative militant vibe, like Hole or Pussy Riot. I don't know if that was intentional, but I like it anyway.

I didn't expect to hear her mention Olivia Records in this, I started buying Olivia titles when I saw them for "lesbian folk" content after discovering stuff like Lavender Jane and Berkely Womens' Music Collective, then I went and checked and I have a Cris Williamson album with June on it. I never noticed before even though her name is on the cover.

June mentions racism in her native country the Philippines. How does two Filipinas experience racism in their country as both sisters look very Filipino? I can understand both experiencing racism when they arrived in the USA since 60s were the worst time for racism.
@johnlloyddy70164 жыл бұрын
Believe it or not, there was a prejudice against mixed breeds in the Philippines back in the old days. Interracial marriages were frowned upon on both sides. Children of mixed parents were looked down upon as outsiders. And children of american military servicemen who marry locals were basically considered as children of prostitutes, since the Joes(Filipino slang for American G.I.s) were stereotyped as only interested in bar girls similar to the culture in Vietnam in the 60s.
@celsovillamil48684 жыл бұрын
I am assuming that the racism she experienced were from the white american kids in the American school they attended. There were schools that exclusively catered to children of US servicemen. I am referencing this from wiki........."Millington and her siblings attended The American School, then located in Donada Street in Pasay in Manila,[15] where she later recalled: "the racism we encountered at the American School was crushing."
@RaynerGraham4 жыл бұрын
@@celsovillamil4868 I'd say that's a bad assumption. There's no shortage of racism and it is hardly a phenomenon unique to white people. Children of American soldiers and Vietnamese women weren't too popular among their more ethnically pure Vietnamese countrymen. I'd guess something similar was in play in June and Jean's childhood in the Philippines, though I don't discount the possibility of your supposition also being true. (Haven't listened to the interview yet, so don't know what June says on the subject.)
@celsovillamil48684 жыл бұрын
@@RaynerGraham Never did I state that racism is a purely white people domain. My statement is based on the context of June's statement AND the era when it happened. The assumption is based on her statement in her interview (where she later recalled: "the racism we encountered at the American School was crushing." ) I grew up in the Philippines and I know for a fact that the "American schools" there were predominantly catering to the US service people in the Philippines. Obviously the students there were predominantly white, just based on demographics. You are forgetting that was the era when racial segregation and Jim Crow was still a fact of life in the USA and was the predominant belief that it was actually legal. My assumption is based on that context for that ERA. So please do not put words in my statement. I have seen and grown up and seen changes in the world. It is still not ideal, just observing your country would prove that. But someday it will get better.
@RaynerGraham4 жыл бұрын
@@celsovillamil4868 I'm forgetting, eh? I'll bet I know more about Jim Crow, racial segregation and "that era" than you do. You made an assumption. I think it's an unwarranted one. I haven't listened to the interview to hear just what June said on the subject. Even if she calls out specifically white racism she encountered at the American school, that doesn't mean a phenomenon such as I describe regarding Vietnam didn't (doesn't) also exist in the Philippines (and elsewhere), and that she experienced that too. I bet it did. People like to hate "the other" for many, many different reasons. I live in a community that is overwhelmingly Asian (and my wife is Vietnamese) - the largest ethnic group is Vietnamese, but there are also a lot of Chinese and Indians, as well as quite a few Filipinos and a smattering of various others - and I can attest to the fact that racism is not peculiar to white people. My mind did not leap to where yours did (I have also previously read the quote of June's that you reference), but, rather, to both that and what I've additionally described as a possibility (it is common). I wonder that yours did not.
