Once you acquire citizenship in another country, you'll need to surrender your Indian passport, as India doesn't allow dual citizenship. You'll receive a surrender certificate, and your passport will be invalidated.
With the OCI card in hand, you'll enjoy various advantages. Unlike traditional visas, the OCI card has lifelong validity, making updates hassle-free. Whether you're visiting or staying in India, there are no lengthy restrictions on your stay. Even overstaying for more than 180 days won't pose an issue. Anything before citizenship is okay. After Citizenship the restriction is for agricultural land only. You can buy house, apartment, commercial space just like anyone

Tax slab is based on income. It does not have to do with status. Citizens however have some deductions which might not be applicable to you. Licensed tax consultant will be able to give you more insight

Hi I am no expert however if I were you I would get Australia passport renewed on priority and then reach FRRO informing overstay to get it regularize by paying fine(providing reason for overstay). Since it is child I am sure they may empathize circumstances due to which overstay happened and then apply for OCI. As I said take necessary steps to show your intention to do right thing

I personally am aware that LIC and FD is not a problem. Mutual funds have restrictions(especially if you are in US/Canada), you may have to do due diligence or even better seek professional help who understands this.

If you are NRI, you cannot hold SB account. Pension needs to be directed to NRO account. That change needs to be initiated. Also speak to your Bank and CA who understands law and processes

If I start work in India in the private IT sector will I only pay Indian income taxes or will it be both indian and canadian taxes? Infact are Indian IT companies willing to offer job to OCI card holders. Just to share I have a property + car in canada. What will I need to do legally of course to avoid paying any Canadian taxes on Indian income while in India and still preserve Canadian citizenship. This is a million dollar question however I will try to answer this. In India most of the companies are service based and looks for value for money resources. Also when you have tasted outside country the hiring manager will feel that you will be less accommodating to Indian culture of working long. These are my personal opinion. Hi with American passport not having India visa, best would be to check with FRRO on what need to be done. If you have lived in India for more than 6 months you can apply for OCI provided you meet all criteria. Your case is unique so please check with FRRO to be on right guiding path

My Mom wants to get her OCI card after being in Canada for over 60 years, and in the mid 1970s gave up her Indians Passport, to make a long story short has no idea where her old Indian Passport is, so how can she prove she is Born In India, sounds bit funny because she was born there and lived their for 20 yrs of her life, she is a Widow now. What is her best course of action? Nhi milta adhaar card sir if child is born outside india and is a foregien national with oci card ,you get adhaar card only with if you have indian passport or indian birth certificate OR koi option nhi hai oci card pe bi nhi banta adhaar card , i got this information in october 2023 when i was in india.

This is a tricky question. As far as my logic goes you are citizen of another country so the country to which your citizenship belongs to is responsible in that case. Will try finding answer to this though

Other countries have not been very efficient with evacuating their citizens in recent times. Upon some initial search, I found out OCI card holders have been evacuated by the Indian government many times, but they have also been differentiated some times. Seems like a grey area to me.

Hi when passport changes you will need to update. till age of 20 yrs and at the age of 50. Can you go to OCI website and choose OCI misc service and upload new passport details online. I think there is no charge and consulate send you email confirmation of update of record at their end. Can you please keep me informed?

OCI holders will have NRO and NRE accounts only.

From experience; you have following options: 1. Close the account. 2. Make it a joint account with family member so if any activity/action is required, they can take care of it. This is still challenging as with banks policy change, every now and then they will need one or other form re-signed. 3. Convert it to NRE/NRO account. 4. I dont guarantee anything with this option: leave it as such. If bank doesnt know, they dont care. Good luck

Hello, I submitted my OCI application in the first week of September. Finally got a status update but unfortunately, BLS rejected it due to my father name missing a letter on the online application form, silly typing mistake by me. :( Please help me understand the process of resubmitting the application, do I have to do the entire application again? Do i have to pay the fees again? They have me to re-do the online application, do I have to submit every single document with the checklist again? Get demand drafts again? Need some guidance, I am really panicking here.

Hi my understanding is that BLS has rejected the application and not CGI. So your CGI DD is intact you will not have to submit that again. Can you check where the rejection is from. BLS or CGI? You may have to pay the service fee to BLS again in this case. Any way my suggestion is that you speak to BLS once. Just fill a new application and if you don’t-have access to the document which you filed just get new printout. My understanding is that your application is not rejected but being sent for correction and submission. Keep me posted

With OCI you can stay as long as you want to, even lifetime. No need of exit visa. Check how the taxation works

Hi the answer is Yes. OCI will allow you to stay in India without any issues. How you work and where you work has nothing to do with OCI. When you are physically in India for more than 182 days it will impact taxation. You may have to consult a good tax consultant for on all the geography where you have ties.
