Anthony realizing he still has almost 30 year old save, and panicking because he realizes they'll disappear any day now if he doesn't get them off of the card is really endearing. I can't imagine if I booted up my original Pokemon Red and my save was still there (wherever that cart ended up, I haven't seen it in.... well, over 20 years now)

For several games like Goldeneye and Perfect Dark, you can actually "dual-wield" two N64 controllers, effectively giving you two separate analog sticks. Not the most comfortable for button placement, but it allowed for two thumb sticks at once for a few games that benefitted from it.

Not sure if Anthony noticed this but the time when the N64 reset itself is when he plug in the wireless adapter with the memory pack connected. The time when the N64 didn't reset itself is when he plug in the wireless adapter without the memory pack. This means the memory pack is the cause of the reset, either by design to read the saves or faulty capacitor from the power draw.

Just to clarify here, Diddy Kong Racing didn't use the memory pak for save games. As the big warning screen shows (and like Mario Kart 64), the only thing the memory pak was used for was to save ghost data in Time Trial. The actual save games were on the cartridge itself via an EEPROM chip, so there isn't even a CR2032 in there.

Also, just speculation but when you put the controller port "dongle" the first time you had the memory card inside the dongle and the n64 rebooted. There actually was a peripheral that allowed you to use both a memory card and a rumble pak at the same time. It was a rumble pak with a built in slot to add a memory card. And it had a switch that let you choose between rumble and save whenever you wanted. E: It was called the TremorPak Plus. And it had two switches, one of them changed the vibration level. the downsides were that it made the controller extra bottom heavy and it used 2 batteries (but i don't remember if this was only for the rumble adjustment).
@LalondeJonathan
@LalondeJonathan 3 жыл бұрын
I had it and yes, batteries had the exact same function as for all other rumble paks and their copies: give the juice to the motor. I can’t believe that modern third-party controllers can’t manage to integrate a switchable rumble pak when it was standard on a 35% cheaper copy in 1999.

Good old times playing 007 on my local gaming store paying by the hour because only rich people had video games in Brazil back then! These days it's becoming the rule again with insane prices, shortages, taxes and currency devaluation against the dollar!

In my country, Indonesia, we also did the same thing. We played on our local gaming pub by rent by the hour by setting the timer on the TV. 🤣 Having gaming consoles at home is only a luxury that fortunate people might had back in the days in third world countries. Also these kind of business is very commonplace in my country back then before the rise of e-cafes and smartphones.

4:50 - I had a 3rd party rumble/memory card all in one! You simply flicked a small switch on the rumble pack to change from the card to the rumble.
@ronsonwagner9401

I had that one too! It was a Tremor Pak and it was a huge L shaped accessory that stuck out of the controller and had a slot for the memory card.

@@ronsonwagner9401 Nah, mine is a huge one that was both rumble and memory card in one. Not a slot, it was the card! 4x the space of a regular card too.

@@Defensive_Wounds The Shockwave was the most common one. It also had a built in microphone, the idea being that you could put it into 'listen mode' and it would try to add rumble in games that didn't support the official pack by reacting to sound effects.
