"A different video than usual. Seems to be a theme whenever I am on camera" - but that is why people like your videos Anthony. Keep doing these "weird" videos, they are awesome. Also, I love Open Source. These people know what everyday hassles the community faces and they try to make it go away unlike companies that will just push expensive new stuff that doesn't even solve the problem you originally had but creates new ones.

Fun fact, in Sonic, they intended to have the waterfall “sparkle” by using that little flaw in the composite signal with the rainbowing effect.

The thing about SCART is, that it's just the connector/pin standard, and the cable can actually carry pretty much anything on it. Composite/RGB/S-Video/Component can all be carried over the SCART cable, though not all cables had all the pins connected so for example trying to carry RGB on a low-end SCART cable might not work. But the cable itself was a beast and made things SO MUCH easier for us in the Europe, as you would just pretty much connect anything to your TV via SCART, either via SCART-SCART or just using one of those adapters that would eat in Composite/S-Video/whatever and transfer it to the SCART connector :).

I still got scart cables everywhere. They used to come with everything. Never knew that USA was stuck with AVA cables for so long and barely had access to EUROSCART / SCART connections, which is pretty much the previous HDMI version before HDMI was a thing.

One guy like 6 years ago does an article about blowing on cartridges not working because they don't do it right and since then everybody runs with it. It absolutely works if you're sloppy enough because it's the combination of the moisture and the friction that cleans a bit from the contacts and makes the game work. I have proven it empirically a number of times. It doesn't even take that many attempts before it's obvious that it works. It blows my mind that everyone still doesn't understand this.

Of course it's not great to be blowing spittle all over your games and then putting them in your machine, instead you should be using qtips and alcohol or those game cleaning cards, but saying it doesn't do anything is flat wrong.

blowing on the contacts back in the day worked because the moisture in your breath helped flaky contacts transmit/receive the data easier when starting up. the reason people said not to do it is it helped to oxidize the contacts which over time made them work less.

the beauty of a old CRT and RF is that the signal is noisy smoothing the pixels and that was the intended experience from the game manufacturers
@medicinemountain1655
@medicinemountain1655 2 жыл бұрын
You can usually find CRTs on facebook marketplace for really cheap or even free sometimes. I got a free Philips CRT with component input, I use an HDMI to component converted and emulate games at 60fps. A good HDMI to component converter is only $40 typically, so if you prefer to work the other way around, it's much cheaper.

Don’t blow in the cartridge, it WILL damage it over time. (You blow spit particles into the cartridge which corrode the internal pcb)
@alantrask4317
@alantrask4317 4 жыл бұрын
Its actually the spit particles and fog you're blowing that makes the better connection rather than getting rid of any "dust". Saliva has electrolytes (que Idiocracy clip) that help make the connection but can also contribute towards further corrosion of the pins. That's why it's only ever a temporary fix. Anthony's method is just more wear and tear in scraping bare metal together. The best way to clean the game pins is to rub them with a pencil eraser to get any tarnish off and then to wipe down with alcohol. Unfortunately, most issues with cart connections stems from the pins inside the console not being as tight anymore and getting to them to bend them back into position is a huge pain in the ass.

I know blowing technically works but the actual reason it's wrong is because of vapour. You'll rust up the contacts that way. Anthony's method does work but then you're left cleaning the contacts on the console because not all of them would've fallen onto the open circuit board and remain on those contacts. You're supposed to use a cotton bud to clean the contacts or if you have it lying around nearby, a blower since it wouldn't be blowing moisture filled air from your lungs but rather the air the contacts are touching anyway.

blowing in the cartridge would deposit moisture on the contacts. This moisture WOULD help the contacts make a better connection, but it would also speed up corrosion of the contacts, damaging the cartridge over time.

SCART connection was also used, in limited cases, as a high definition connection by using an YPbPr connection over scart by some television and audio video equipment (set top boxes, DVD players, Blu-ray players, etc.) manufacturers. By using an YPbPr connection, SCART could be used for high definition signals, like 720i, 720p, 1080i, 1080p. Some manufacturers were using as Y the video composite connection, while others were using the green connection as Y. With the advent of HDMI, and because of the fact that the connection was not standardized (as was S-video) and limited only to a certain manufacturer, devices supporting high definition channels over SCART with YPbPr connection became scarce, if not extinct. In many cases, it was implemented over a RGB SCART or CVBS SCART and the YPbPr mode of SCART was manually switched. YPbPr became used as an independent connection, and SCART was left only for standard definition content.

Right back in the day we were hardwiring all import consoles like the SFC, PCE and megadrive to scart connectors and were able to play all these import NTSC 60hz consoles on our PAL 50hz tv's full screen, full speed but in a higher resolution then they were displaying on native displays. I mean, okay. Nifty. I had a box that did this years ago when a group of colleagues (and myself, obvi) moved to Germany. It converted any analog signal (at least that I could find), including audio, to HDMI and did a great job. One other nifty feature (and why I bought it) is that it'd also convert between NTSC and PAL (and vice versa) as well as 30 and 24FPS signals both ways (even from HDMI). Which not only ensured I could use my American junk in Germany, even my ratty old VCR, but it was a great way to test before moving if our American TVs could actually handle German input on HDMI. I can't recall what the brand or product name was or how much it cost ... but I'm pretty sure I paid less than that for it, because I'm cheap. LOL And it did it all quite cleanly visually and without a perceptible frame delay. It was great. When I needed it. Now that I'm back in the US it just sits in a box in my attic somewhere. But it wasn't open source, so I guess there's that.

The "SCART" in France is called "Peritel". It was a standard created in the end of 70's early 80's, invented by a French. Better quality than composite signal, the European version of nes and snes has a RGB signal output

My parents still used SCART on their LCD until like a year ago when I changed it out for HDMI. Which is crazy considering they have a digital receiver, which converts the signal to analogue, it goes through the cable, and then the TV converts it back to digital.
