This is Ke Huy Quan's first major role in over 30 years. He was tired of the stereotypical Asian roles he was being offered and essentially quit acting. It wasn't until he watched Crazy Rich Asians and saw Asian men and women in leading roles and it inspired him to return...and return he did.

It wasn't so much that he was tired of the roles that were available, it's that roles for Asians simply dried up. He said he'd get maybe one or two casting calls a year, while his other actor friends were going to two auditions a week.

The backs of VHSes would always say stuff like "you'll laugh, you'll cry it will take your breath away" but this film does all that and more. It's so smart and so intentionally dumb, it's so off the wall yet hits you right where you live. Every single person involved with this bared their soul making this film. There's not a single "that's good enough" moment, every single second is pure ernest passion. Still the best film I've seen this year.
@bradleymay5350

lol mhmm. I apologize for focusing on the most inconsequential part of your comment, but the intentionally dumb stuff was... Lol well, I can't say 'endearing' with complete honesty. Some parts made me realize that while I found the film extraordinary and meaningful, I can't in good conscience recommend it to anyone. God forbid my parents ever put it on... Lol yikes. That said, I really did like the cheap costumes and silly mechanics for hopping dimensions. It seemed like 'playing' in the most literal sense. Making costumes from whatever is around the house, setting up fantastical rules and committing to the sometimes ridiculous narrative you're building. It really made me harken back to playtime as a kid.

@@AL-fl4jk Lol you're not wrong. Apologies if you thought I was putting down the film in a passive aggressive manner. Not my intentions. Or if I just came off as long winded and pompous. Hah and yeah... In hindsight, unloading that incoherent stream of consciousness to a group of strangers was probably poor form. My bad. I'll try to rein it in and keep things more concise next time.

There are two foreshadowing moments in this film that I just can't stop thinking of. The first time Evelyn verse jumps she has to tell Deidre that she loves her, because Deidre thinks she's unlovable and that's how Evelyn helps her in the end, showing her she's not. And when Gonggong wants to shoot Joy in the office, Evelyn talks with Waymond's voice because that's how Joy is saved, by Evelyn learning to think and fight with kindness, like Waymond.

If Evelyn being the worst version of her multiversal self could be what makes her able to verse jump like Jobu, that may mean that Jobu might’ve been the worst version of all the Joys. So when Joy asks her mom why she would want a daughter who’s nothing more but “this,” then maybe Evelyn also sees that her Joy was one that chose a successful life path and would be proud to have as her daughter. Might be reading too much into it, but it’s a wonderful thing to think about!

@Saphthings
@Saphthings 2 жыл бұрын
You know, I've finally realized after rewatching this several times, the Alpha Joy, becoming Jobu means that in that universe that Joy was the "worst Joy", the one that failed at everything. Because Alpha Weymond said that in order for the mind to be able to handle all those and access all possibilities they had to be from the universe where every choice was the "wrong" choice. And then Joy at the end tells her mom, "Why wouldn't you choose to be in a place where your daughter is better than this", "this" being "me". So Jobu's Joy was a Joy that failed at everything, in a universe where her mother was the ultimate genius, and she went looking for the one universe where her mom failed at everything just like her. So she was looking for someone who's an ultimate failure like her to tell her there's an upside, a reason to go on, that she couldn't see. So no matter where you are in the multiverse, where you are in existence, by becoming everything everywhere all at once, no matter how high you are, you get the feeling of your worst low, at all times and your worst low gets to see first hand at all times all that you'll never have. The only conclusion is mutual obliteration, like the worlds crashing at the end. Unless. You accept that it is what it is, and enjoy the small moments of time where it all makes sense, because there can still be one big discovery, something at the end, that explains all there is. Until such a discovery, or such a moment, even at the lowest point, you can still find Joy in it.

Everything everywhere all at once really describes how this movie made me feel. The rapid jumping from parts that make you laugh and then cry. Its heartwarming and cyinical, funny and sad. Even Evelyn's parenting at the end her mind became open so that she will be okay with her daughter being gay but also not so open that she will be strict about her daughter taking care of herself. It seems impossible to balance everything everywhere all at once but if you can make peace with just accepting your choice within all the possibilities that the universe holds then you can choose how you want to love and care for others without restraint.
