That scene, where they had both gone on separately to be "successes" was perfect because of his parting line about how even if they had nothing but a failing business struggling to make a living he would have been happy had they been together. It put everything in her life back into focus and it reminded me of another movie I hadn't seen in a long time but just saw again recently, City Slickers. In it Curly states the secret to life is ONE THING, find what that is and hold onto it and the rest doesn't mean anything. Evelyn struggled not knowing what that one thing was. She thought she knew but she didn't. Once she did know that it was her family then she knew what she had to do. The conversation in the rain made that clear to her as her most successful self learned success wasn't what she thought it was.

This movie made me cry. To me the whole thing was sort of one big allegory for what it feels like to live with depression. To look around at your life and be confused by all of it, to not be able to give your undivided attention to anything because you're always stuck in your own head. Until one day it becomes enough... you're tired of all of it, so you think of ending things... To me, it was very moving to see Evelyn decide to continue on. To commit to living in her universe, with her family, however mundane it may be. This movie taught me that, even when we are at our lowest lows, unable to recognize what's going on in our lives, there are still things to live for. We're all on this tiny floating rock in the middle of space surrounded by a ka-jillion other tiny space rocks and probably none of this really matters. But love matters. And our family and friends matter. There will likely be a collage of small, fleeting moments throughout our lives where everything *actually* makes sense. Where life *feels* like it's worth it. I was able to recognize what this story was really about because I've struggled with depression and dark thoughts for most of my life. Though, I'm happy to say that this movie may have forced me to see things in a different light. Nothing matters. Not *really*. So therefore, I don't need to get so worked up about things. I don't need to let myself get so stressed out trying to make everything perfect. I can just live. Even if it's just a mundane life where things feel boring. Sure, I'm not a movie star in this lifetime - maybe there's a version of me out there somewhere who is - but I have people in my life who love me and I have things I want to pursue. This movie, in a surprising twist of events, somehow gave me the strength to keep going, even if only to enjoy those small moments.

@razzprince28772 жыл бұрын
To me it was a clusterfuck. I loved the first half but when the film tried to teach me it's 9th lesson, I stopped giving a fuck and just wanted entertainment. Wow, living with regret is redundant, oh so is being homophobic, oh so is giving up on your daughter, so is giving up on your parents, so if giving up on your husband, oh and let's not forget that Climate change is happening?! After the 3rd message the film tried to beat me over the head with (messages I've seen in plenty of films before) I stopped caring and just wanted fun action but by then, the action stopped.
@Jugger_melon2 жыл бұрын
@@razzprince2877 This is a damn silly comment, this was never regarded to be an action movie, it's literally an absurdist drama with a bunch of elements used to paint many parallels and metaphors to the movie's theme from beginning to end. "9th lesson" LMAO WHAT none of those are "lessons" every single "lesson" you thought it taught was simply ONE lesson personal to Evelyn and her character arc. It wasn't "teaching" the audience anything. It was teaching HER to better appreciate her life and the people in it- that theme just happens to be something a lot of people can resonate with. "Just wanted fun action but the action stopped", I've NEVER seen such a shallow comment regarding this movie

@@Jugger_melon "how dare you have a differing opinion to mine, you are a retard!" Is literally what you sound like 🤣 I'm not saying I don't respect this movie, it's brilliantly acted, brilliantly directed and somewhat well written. But you're trying to act like they weren't beating you over the head with philosophical messages and that is ridiculous 😂 pretty much every film nowadays is trying to ham some sort of message (because apparently escapism isnt worth anything anymore) so to say "This film isn't giving you any lessons" is disingenuous or maybe you genuinely couldn't see the messages in front of you but I highly doubt that. To me the movie was a clusterfuck of messages and ideas that didn't hit home (For me) Btw you do know the idea behind a protagonist is that you are supposed to learn along with her. So if the film is showing her these lessons, the director is essentially teaching you these lessons..... That's effective film making but to say this film wasn't preachy in any way is something I don't think you truly believe. About halfway through the film I planned to make a stupid comment about how this movie was good, but not as good as Morbius to my friends. However I was simply speechless at the end. Never has a movie had this effect on me, everything from the action, comedy, and emotion blew me away. I left the theater just lost in thought, concerned yet so satisfied w/ a movie I had no expectations going into.
@suzannerozario35782 жыл бұрын
The moment the trailer dropped I vowed I was actually going to a in-person theater to see this movie. I brought my daughter and her best friend to share what I knew was going to be the trippiest movie they’ve ever seen. The “awards” scenes, the “nunchucks”, and the mustard splooging out of hot dogs had me wishing I was one of those mothers who pays attention to ratings before I brought two twelve year old girls with me to the theater. We all loved it. And I learned that twelve year old girls in 2022 know way more about toys than twelve year old girls in 1984 did. Yikes.
@rakkafriend59702 жыл бұрын
I've thought about this quite a bit and finally found the comment to respond to! Yeah, the movie is weird and raunchy sometimes. But also, it's extremely, deeply heartfelt. I'm an absolute cinephile and this is FINALLY the one movie that made me actually cry as a grown man in theaters. It beat me. And I watched it with four different friends, and we all came out of it with wildly different but all totally valid interpretations of the film. For me, it was a struggle against depression and suicide and family drama. For one guy, it was a film about realizing there's something important to learn about keeping your ego in check. etc. The "awards" scene might have horrified you and (though it sounds like it didn't) your daughters but for me I walked away not thinking about the insanity, but thinking about how much I care about family and how I realize I should spend more time with them and less time on things that matter far less. I also watched it with my parents and that was...mildly life changing. In good ways. This is a family film, but not a family-friendly film.

I walked in expecting a quirky, hopefully fun movie and was in complete shock about 30 minutes in. From there it just kept escalating to more and more bizarre, funny, crazy, fun, and… emotional??? That was the amazing thing to me. It shows the magic of movies. Introduce bizarre concepts but play them straight and trust the audience will go along with them and they quickly become like any other storytelling device. There's a scene with two inanimate rocks talking to one another through subtitles and it's fucking touching. Yes it's fun and silly but it doesn't actually feel off within the movie's own rules. It's full of these moments. Playing with how story and drama is relayed to the audience and bringing in new ideas that soon become second nature to the viewing audience. I can think of no other movie that does this so seamlessly or effectively.
