A Video Essay with commentary on Game of Thrones season 8 going into everything that the season did a good job on. From some of the best moments, best scenes, best characters like the hound, just everything it did well. I am also making this in light of the anniversary of the ending of GoT Season 8.

Agreed. His death was dumb but I feel like his story had already ended by then so I didn’t mind it as much. I also felt that Tyrion didn’t have as much of a fallout as some other characters. Even though he made some stupid decisions, I felt that his personality was still intact throughout the show. He was funny, witty, and usually smart. He also had some great scenes with Jaime.

Strong disagree because of what follows after. There is quite a bit of information out there that D&D pretty much only like using actors for their ability to emote. While useful for "believabilty" in the character it rarely adds anything to the dialogue. That whole interaction between the two is supposed to be one of the culminating conclusions in the series. The very first episode of the entire show ends with Jaime pushing Bran out of the window. I'd argue Theon meeting Jon/Sansa again is just as important (atleast some time and emotion gets dedicated to those scenes). But back to the topic at hand. The conversation between the two Lasts pretty much 1 minute. 1 minute is dedicated to the act that kicked off an entire sub plot of the series. Yea, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau can act. But we've known that for 8 seasons. I wanted to see some actual development or atleast not bran-bot just saying "I'm magic now K thnx bye." The entirety of season 8 is only rivaled by the Dornish cluster fuck in season 5.

InRealTime769 Of course, the issue here could actually stem from **two** earlier problems, IMO... the _way_ Jon was brought back, & the lack of real *_change_* to him (it initially seemed like he had changed a bit- given he smiled more in that scene with Sansa, than I remember from the rest of the series) - I know it was easy to use a Red Priestess to do it, & that’s fine, I guess...but... _I_ think there was a *better* way; they’d started to burn their dead, right? As a result of dealing with the wights & White Walkers- why on earth would they just leave an assumed dead Jon just lying on a table, til Melisandre decides to get out of bed & work? That made no sense to me- no-one would have protested Jon getting an honourable funeral; he’s dead- whether they agreed or disagreed with what he was doing in life, that’s perfectly fair. Even Ned was going to get that- & he was publicly executed as a traitor. What would have been better, again- only in my own opinion... Sansa & co. arriving, to find that Jon has recently died, & is being prepared for cremation- so the White Walkers cannot raise him. She looks on his corpse & tearfully agrees, wishing she could have seen him again (this is literally in the books; one of her thoughts while at the Vale- she actually thinks about Jon a bit, in the last book - it would not have taken much effort to write such a simple scene or two)- they have the cremation, & the pyre burns down throughout the night... Next morning- they go to collect the ashes & bones for interment... but Ghost starts padding toward a now-moving pale form; it’s Jon, now very much alive & still whole. They initially freak out, but ironically, Ghost’s reaction is reassuring- given he hates the wights, & fights them... it also helps that Jon doesn’t have blackened extremities or supernatural blue eyes. So, everyone is going to have to wrap their heads around the fact that he’s alive again (maybe Melisandre is in communication with her fellow Red Priests... maybe she’s learnt there was another unburnt by a funeral pyre...idk) - more than that- Jon’s different, now... And this would be the perfect time for a reminder (via voiceover, or flashback) of Maester Aemon’s words, _’Kill the boy- & let the man be born.’_ This is just my own headcanon, but I really like the idea that Jon’s kind of emotionally separated from his past through this ‘rebirth’- that we can almost explore a new character, with him. The lead rebels can still be executed, I guess- no one would feel comfortable fighting alongside them, trusting them to have their back. I think that Stannis’ Northern Mountain Clan book-plot should have been given to Jon & Sansa- rather than that cringey struggle to make small talk & gain allies that they had; it would have been a new environment to see a new side to the character we thought we knew - I like the idea of a more confident, maybe even darkly charismatic Jon- I mean, D & D played up certain qualities of Jon, & downplayed others, to the point that they almost appeared out-of-character when they were utilised. It would also give us some great character interactions- like Tormund & ‘Big Bucket’ Wull- I would have **paid** to see that - maybe Sansa almost taking on a Val-like relationship with Jon, & she too, being surrounded by those who respected & loved her family, & starting to let her walls down once more - Jon being in a place where- not only does his (apparent) bastardy not matter to him, but it doesn’t matter to those around him. The Northern Mountain Clans are rather different from the other Northern houses- they have enormous respect for the Starks... & they hate the Boltons; you wouldn’t see any garbage like that ridiculous Glover scene (btw- I’m not hating on the actor- just the scene) - & with the Mountain Clans behind them, getting support from the other houses would be easier... & it would also help to rebirth (pardon the pun) the apparently dead ‘North Remembers’ plot. I don’t know what to do about the Boltons bit- I guess it can be left as is (I don’t think much of it, but whatever- I’m not a paid screenwriter, either)... however, I was annoyed by the Karstarks & Umbers- had it been like they were more there, because they had no choice- a reminder of Roose’s control & Ramsay’s barbarism (what happened with the Cerwyns, for example- had we seen the new young lord at a gathering of Bolton ‘allies’, looking nervous & fearful about the Bolton veterans & large numbers of Frey allies, I would accept that*) *That reminds me; if the Boltons had so much of the North under their thumb, or at the very least- neutral on the idea of siding with Starks in a civil war in the North... why not give us something to really show that? I mean, maybe not book-accurate to the character of the North, but at least it would have been something. And, if they were trying to say something about the changing politics of the North, why not show us **book-accurate** conflicted Northern characters... In the form of Barbrey Dustin, & her Ryswell kin? That woman would have been incredible to see on screen- like Olenna, but younger- & somewhat more bitter. I think Judy Davis could have played her *_brilliantly_* but I guess that’s neither here, nor there... I also wish the Vale forces thing could have been handled differently- instead of Sansa’s (understandable) trust issues leading her to hold that knowledge back from Jon- & the stupid arguments they had, that didn’t make a whole lot of sense (beyond that single fact)... she could simply tell him that support will be forthcoming- they just have to hold on. Rickon’s death.... _sigh_ Other than the fact that the ‘North Remembers’ plot/s got aborted through stupidity like this ‘Umber just hands Rickon & Shaggydog over, for no reason- with no plot or plan’-thing being so entirely asinine- it also ignores another *central* part of why the ‘North Remembers’ plot/s even exist in the books - the Northern houses **can’t** overtly rebel against the Boltons, because several members of the Northern houses are being held down south. All their plotting *has* to be sneaky- so as not to endanger their relatives... except for one (Karstark) that is a rival branch- & they are deliberately overt in their supposed loyalty to Stannis, _in aid of getting a hostage (& rightful heir) killed_ - I mean, I understand why D&D have so much trouble understanding the book-plot for the North... they had trouble with grade-school book reports, too... If Rickon has to die- why not just do it ‘Gladiator’-style? That plays up to Ramsay’s game-playing mindset - &, in Ramsay’s view- the last legitimate male heir (so far as he knows) is dead- he’s (supposedly) married to the female heir... he’s supposedly inherited his father’s control of the North... but they all hate him- he only has fear to control people, & the idea that the North wouldn’t support a Stark- any Stark, bastard or female, over a Bolton: isn’t only ludicrous- it’s insulting... Obviously, with the Vale support not being a secret- there would be no apology scene, but they can still talk about the need for trust- & the fact that they still have enemies; I just think the tone would change- not so much regretful & unsure, as focused & determined. And I think the King in the North scene is still fine- a couple of minor changes needed, to account for the earlier ones... but the scene of Sansa looking at LF should *definitely* stay, because that will lead into the new challenges... I honestly don’t know with some of it - it’s really hard to try & utilise some crap plot-points. I have no idea of how to augment s7... because Gods it was bad. Wow... I did not know this reply would end up being so long. Thanks for listening to my rant, if you got this far, lol.

The whole sequence up untill the white walker's hair moves was good. We saw Jora die protecting Dany and we saw her using a swod for first time and fighting with him. We see theon's death and arc completed and on top of all of that THE MUSIC. also the part when the night king walks towards bran and gives him the scariest look as he draws his swords was amazing, I was literally on my toes the whole sequence i was waiting for something to happen i was waiting for my mind to be blown away by a big revelation about the white walkers with some warging shit..... In my humble opinion, I think Theon Greyjoy and The Hound had the most consistently written and satisfying story arcs from start to finish in the show (neither were my favorite characters either) For how Theon began, all the sins he committed, the pain and torture he went through, the physical and emotional castration (literally) he became, and then the good he eventually accomplished it almost brings a tear to my eye thinking about. You cant say he didn’t justifiably redeem himself in the end. And The Hound always seemingly stayed his cold, unnerving self with the words he said but the slow change of his actions revealed who he eventually was at heart. Doesn’t hurt he got his vengeance in the most “hound” way possible either Good job on those two at least, D&D.

MatiZ815 Sandor teaching Arya the futility of revenge and saying “do you want to be like me?” was forced to me. Arya was already way more vengeful than The Hound ever was. The Hound’s main thing was teaching the Stark girls about survival and how cruel the world is rather than being obsessed with vengeance. After he does get revenge on those guys late in season 6, he tries to make amends for his past. He hated his brother but never showed that revenge on him was that high on his priority list. Arya, on the other hand, wipes out families in the name of vengeance. She doesn’t sleep until she recites the names of people she wants to kill. She decides her family is more important than killing Cersei so she goes back to Winterfell, then after getting some dick and saving humanity she decides “I’ll just go kill Cersei now”. And then The Hound also decides that all he cares about is revenge after risking his life many times to save humanity. With more episodes it could have been done better, but since they only did 6 episodes, their decisions were just rushed and everything seemed forced.

00:50 which would have been great, in my opinion. Fan favorite or not, characters cannot get great deaths just because they are loved by fans. That's not how it's supposed to work. The way she died made no sense whatsoever - why would a zombie giant play with his prey like this, instead of just stomping her? Answer: So she can kill him. Sorry I must disagree on almost half of these, but I respect the effort. You highlighted some points I loved myself.

Would’ve made more sense if she’d had a different weapon or the giant had lived just long enough to crush her. Still gives the vibe of it but she was being crushed a little too long before killing him for it to feel totally authentic.

It did come off as rather dumb. I agree with her insisting on armouring up and leading her men, like the Lady of Bear Island that she is. But her death charge is silly. On the other hand, the entire episode was silly, so I guess this is nitpicking. Imagine if you were the editor and you were given this incoherent mess.

Theon deserves to be here as well. He is one of few characters that got an entire character arc from end to finish without being ruined. As much as I disliked him, his death was probably the saddest and yet still most satisfying for everyone. He betrayed those he loved, he was broken and he managed to completely redeem himself.

Agree on all of these except the Lyanna Mormont one and Sandor convincing Arya to give up on revenge. The first was incredibly forced and implausible fanservice - a ten year old isn't going to kill a fucking giant, it broke suspension of disbelief as much as every other character surviving the battle just because the camera cuts away when they're being swarmed by wights. The Sandor and Arya moment fell flat because Arya's way too far gone at this point. She baked the Freys into pies and slaughtered almost all of them, she's basically gone full serial killer. She wouldn't give up so easily at this point and doesn't have any humanity left to save other than her love for her family, which was also smashed in the previous episode when she said she was going to King's Landing to kill Cersei and probably wouldn't be returning to Winterfell alive, so at this point revenge matters more to her than family.

I just realized this, with Jon going "u r mah kween" is his desperation showing. He knows that he has a better claim on the Iron Throne, he saw Daenerys will go the extreme length to claim the Iron Throne. He can't lie (or at least he stays as honest as possible), and it is showing. This, or he's just simply badly written.

@algogy I feel Cleganebowl would've been better had it be drawn out longer. The Hound could've been motivated to kill his brother (and sacrifice himself) after seeing Arya get murdered or attacked. That would've been a cool plot twist, but no, all fan service and predictability.

Honestly tho, that last scene between Arya and The Hound, where Arya finally adressed him as "Sandor" is the best scene in season 8. From being on Arya's list, to being the one who actually saved her from being a person filled with nothing but vengeance, just like himself, that's a great ending to a character arc. And I'm not even ashamed to admit that I almost cried, hahaha.
@McCallaFilms

Nice summary. I would ad the knighthood of Brienne, as well as the "Theon... You're a good man"-scenario, that perfectly rounds up Theon's character-arc (Although I wish that he didn't charged stupidly into the Night Kings' spear. I stead he should have stood his ground, and after a short brave fight, he would eventually lose). On another note, I disagree with the Glegane-bowl. The Glegane-bowl felt extremely forced and only served as fan-service. Storywise, it would have served the Hound's Character better, to have him give up his lifelong grudge against his brother. He started the series as an angry man, and having him complete the Glegane-bowl, implies that he ended as an angry man (albeit more refined, but still).

Personally I believe Cleganebowl was not epic in the slightest. The Hound being able to tear through the Kingsguard in 10 seconds is ridiculous, killing The Mountain out of anger and hatred instead of mercy. The decision to make the fight happen on a set of stairs was also not great as both of their main quality is strength and power, and they have barely any room to use that. Honestly it was the one thing I was excited for going into that episode and it was such a dud.
@peterumathum4903
@peterumathum4903 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah you guys pretty much said every reason why i cant understans how anyone can find that "epic". Wasn't there also a scene in the season 7 finale in the dragon pit when the hound steps in front of the mountain and the mountain still remains completely emotionless? What changed? Why does he suddenly care about the hound? He's a literal zombie whose only motivation is to protect cersei at all cost. At least that's what qyburn said at the start. The writers had to straight up cheat their way out of that so they could pretend this is personal lol i think it would've been better if the hound and arya find the mountain and cersei, arya tries to kill cersei but the mountain defends cersei so he fights arya. The mountain is beating the shit out of arya but the hound jumps in and he can still sacrifice himself somehow, only instead of dying for no reason he could've died to protect arya
