fun fact, in Alan Wake's American Nightmare, released in 2012, the Old Gods of Asgard song 'Balance Slays the Demon' features a section of backwards talking that specifically references the town of Ordinary and warns of the happenings there. It also features the line: "Beyond the shadow you settle for there is a miracle illuminated" Jesse's favourite Tomas Zane poem.

I usually never bother with lore in video games. I'm here to kill things with guns or swords or both. But with Control? I read everything. Every report. Every item description. Every enemy profile. There's just something about this kind of story that I couldn't put down. I fell in love at first sight and I'm so glad I got the chance to play this game. There's often the question of "If you could go back and experience one game again for the first time, what would it be" and my answer will always be Control.

This game was absolutely fantastic and I love that you covered it finally. There's so many details in this game that you have to go out of your way to find. Like the 2nd floor room in the Transportation area that you have to parkour into through a window that has Alan Wake's typewriter and notes about it. Or the music room at the bottom of the stairs in the main area that played My Dark Disquiet by Poets of the Fall. So much love and care went into this game

On Sankarin tango, the song is actually primarily about all the "heroes" we play as in video games. Chorus talks about how they all very often get beaten down, but must continue soon after with their quest. Meanwhile, First verse is dedicated to Alan Wake, saying how he "mistook an ocean for a lake" and "looks for a path to light, to find his beloved" Second verse is dedicated to Quantum break, while not as 1 to 1 as the first one, it talks about "time shattering into infinity" and "never finding a happy ending"

Fast forward to Feb 2021 & it's available on PS+, so I add it to my library, didn't play it til I finally decided to play it in June 2021 & I'm so glad I did. I plat'd it in 4 days then went back & plat'd the PS4 version 4 days after that. I still have to finish The Foundation DLC though. Even got my son to finally play it.

One thing I appreciated about the story was that Jesse didn't stay a reluctant hero for too long. She begins with an attitude of 'I'll do what's necessary but I'm just here to find my brother' to not really wanting to give up being director quite quickly and I think that was a good idea. It gives her a motivation for arriving but reluctant heroes are kinda tired so abandoning it quickly, in a way plausible for her character, made the character more interesting. Also, it took me an embarrassingly long way into the game to realise that when Ahti suggests Jesse is there to interview for janitor's assistant, he isn't making a mistake ... That's just how Ahti sees the Director.

My theory for the motel is its supposed to represent the collective unconscious of the transit point. All the AWE are from a part of our collective unconscious and the motel is no different. Most cultures of a certain size have that, the Chinese and Mongols had waystations on the silk road, medieval Europe had inns along major roads, and modern America has the small motel.

Huh, I suspected Control and Alan Wake 2 occurred at the same time but thinking about it, noticing Ahti's holiday clearly showing Cauldron Lake? Throwing in the stuff about how the FBC can't get in contact with the Oldest House? Yeah, Ahti puts Jesse on the right path and then sneaks off to make sure Saga and Alan have the guidance they need. He's starting to feel a LOT like Hoid from Brandon Sanderson's works. o.o

31:04 "And Dylan being the one who killed Trench makes him giving himself up to them hit a lot harder." I don't think it was Dylan who killed Trench, but rather the Board firing Trench for letting the Hiss into the Oldest House. Once Trench used the partially burn slide he'd taken from the Ordinary AWE, the Hiss found a much more capable vessel in Dylan and loosed their hold on Trench, but he wasn't completely free either, so the Board fired him. At no time does Dylan pick up the Service Weapon, because to do so would put him in the power of the Board, which he couldn't use unless he submitted to them.
