Fun Fact: Originally, Stripe and Gizmo were the same character. This changed when executive producer Steven Spielberg insisted one of the Gremlins be a good guy with whom the audience could identify.

I really love how the movie messes with the expectation of the mom getting got. It's like, nope! She's fighting back. She still gets beat up and it's still a terrifying ordeal for her but she fights back. She has agency. And it's believable. The Gremlins aren't especially physically imposing. Their claws can be dangerous but most adults can physically overcome one or two. They just come in packs.
@NobodyC13

The original script for Gremlins was much darker. Gizmo was originally going to be the lead gremlin before Steven Spielberg nixed it. Billy was going to come home to find his Mom's freshly decapitated head falling down the stairs after the gremlins hatched. There was a gag of Billy and Kate taking shelter in an empty McDonald's, which is littered with abandoned items like clothes, shoes, purses, even strollers but the burgers remained untouched; implying the gremlins ate the customers. I also don't know if this was in the script but this was expanded in the novelization as there's a darker implication to Mrs. Deagle threatening to foreclose on that single mother and her two kids on Christmas. She's been doing that to many families and people, either buying off their properties or pricing them out of their homes so she can sell it to developers and turn Kingston Falls into an industrialized toxic waste dump. This revelation either led or was discovered after her death, so we shouldn't feel sorry she got what she deserved (she certainly thinks so since she kept muttering "I'm not ready," after seeing the gremlins).

There's also mention of her 'disgraced financier' husband who mysteriously killed himself before the trial. If you look between the lines one could believe she was actually the corrupt one behind the scenes, and murdered him so she wouldn't lose everything in the lawsuit.

This movie is probably the film that scarred me the most as a child. I had seen The Thing on Netflix when I was eight, and felt nothing but GREMLINS absolutely traumatized me. Specifically I think it was the scene of that one gremlin bursting out of the cabinet in the science teacher’s office. It made me scared to open closets, bathrooms, cabinets, drawers, pantries, or any ROOM without the light on for nearly a decade. Hell, there was a sticker of Stripe on a vent in my dad’s workshop in the basement, and I had him cover it up when we would work on Pinewood Derby cars because it scared me so much.

watched it as kid when it came out on VHS, I think between this and Terminator 1 when the he comes out of the fire after the truck blows up are the two scariest moments of my childhood, although I love watching it now, get the humor behind it all Stripe melting gave me nightmares for weeks, but I think the idea of The Terminator got me more, something that just never stops coming after you, how would you try and run away from it, plus AI, is even more relevant now

YES! I've been waiting for this EGA for YEARS! Thank you! Love this movie, even though it traumatized me for life as a kid. It's fantastic, but VERY scary. The Gremlins are just perfect monsters, such a creepy and dangerous-looking design. They're small, and hate bright lights, but that just means they can lurk in any shadowy corner to spring out and attack you. Just terrifying. But Kate's Christmas Speech is the core of the film. Joe Dante insisted it stay in, even though the studio wanted it cut, to the point of telling Speilberg to cut it, because he and Dante shared final cut. Speilberg wasn't even a fan of it, but but considered this Joe Dante's film, and Dante insisted it be there, Speilberg wasn't going to overrule him. The speech, on the surface, is ridiculous, Kate's dad dying because he was dumb enough to try and literally play Santa. But if another human being is telling you about this painful memory of their childhood, you'd have to empathize with them, feel the tragedy of it, even if it's objectively stupid. That, according to Dante, is the whole crux of the film. The Gremlins are vicious terrifying monsters. . . but also gleeful live-action cartoons causing hilarious mayhem, except the victims of the mayhem don't have cartoon powers to survive it.

After the Gremlins are wreaking havoc on the town, Billy tries his car and it starts on the first try. He exclaims "Unbelievable!" I think the Gremlins TRIED to mess with Billy's car (why wouldn't they? They mess with everything and they have a dislike for him in particular), except since it was already broken, they FIXED it by accident!

I love the film. I let my girls watch it at 5 and well, they love it too. There was a month where they asked to watch it every day. We’ve got gizmo toys. We even named our dog gizmo.

I didn’t see this movie till my twenties and when it got to the kitchen scene I looked over at my dad who was just nodding and smiling and I’m like “how is this a kids movie?!”

I love Gremlins! I feel like Gizmo was the gateway drug for 80's kids to fall in love with horror movies. I also love the sequel for how meta and self-aware it is. I feel like it was ahead of its time.

Frances Lee McCain and Sigourney Weaver set young me's expectation for how mothers would react to horror movie situations. That kitchen fight goes SOOOOO hard and is hands down my favorite part of the movie.

I found this channel a week ago, and it came out swinging for the fence. I like this more than cinemasins- just for the host. When he's happy about a particular scene, his voice just flutters. It's amazeballs. Snappy dialog, honest and extremely fair critique, and just a good time all around. Worth the price of admission!

I was 17 when _Gremlins_ came out; saw it with my sibs and friends, loved it. I thought it was hilarious that mean old Mrs. Deagle was played by Polly Holliday, who played Flo "kiss mah grits! " on _Alice_ in the 70s & early 80s, as well as in the spinoff, _Flo,_ for a year or two. A wonderful actress who is still among us at 86. The scene I laughed at most in _Gremlins_ was Spike & his gang thoroughly enjoying _Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,_ and them all singing along to "Heigh Ho!" 😂😂😂

Composer Jerry Goldsmith makes an appearance in the inventor's convention scene. (The same that has Spielberg and Robbie The Robot ). He's the guy in a hat , on the phone behind Hoyt Axton.

One of the best parts, hands down, is " Diggle Diggle Diggle!" My brother and I still reference it, 35 years after seeing this movie the first time.

Excellent video, thanks Cinema Wins! I recently rewatched Gremlins for the first time in years and it was so much more gruesome than I remembered but such a classic. I'm still planning on naming a pet Gizmo one day

at 12:00 you mentioned that the radio adaptation of war of the worlds convinced people it was real, but there wasn't actually a significant uptick in people calling the cops/news station/fcc about the broadcast (in fact it was "low in comparison with other controversial radio broadcasts of the period"), as the radio show was on a not very popular radio station. Those that did call in about it were calling for clarification about the broadcast, however very few were reported as being panicked about it.

I was one of those 13 year olds that went into this film having NO idea what I was in for. Alone in a matinee, I was so very glad to be leaving the theater in daylight! Though it was the 'dad in the chimney' that actually scarred me. That and Cates was one of my earliest crushes for sure.

The only gripe I have with this movie is the lack of effect the snow has on the Gremlins. Snow is water, they should be popping out back babies the entire time they are outside

Fun Fact: When my dad's dog DD had a litter of puppies, we decided to keep one male and one female. The male we kept was named Gizmo by my brother because when he was a puppy, he sang; he sounded remarkably like Gizmo in this movie. Even when he was much older, if you offered him a treat, you could get him to sing by asking. All you'd have to do to tell him what you wanted was say "Siiiiing', making sure to drag out the I and he'd do it.
