Tbf you could say the same about John as you said about Arthur, he's a horrible man and the good he does do doesn't make up for all the horrible shit he did in the gang.But I think the fact both of them tried to be better is what makes them good. In the words of Paarthunax " which is greater, to be born good or over come your evil nature through great adversity?" Id also heavily disagree with you that low honor is the cannon ending, Kicking out Strauss resets your honor to neutral and shortly after you get TONS of chances to boost your honor such as the Downes family, the couple you meet and wiping away the debts and all of those get you insanely high honor ontop of it Arthur does a loving and honorable act in saving John or even going to get the Money ( John needs the money to survive) and arguably in both has Johns needs in his mind. Arthur even has a turn around narratively after talking to the sister in the station. I think you are missing the point of rdr2's story. Rdr1 is about a man trying to escape his past, become a better man and live the family life. Rdr2 is about a blindly loyal man waking up the the reality of his leaders cruelty and corruption and seeing all the bad he has done following him and harboring deep regret and sorrow, realizing he got sick beating a man to death and resolving to become a better man through helping someone live the dream he always wanted ( helping john have a chance at a married life). Arthur embodies and believes this realization so deeply he literally kills himself fighting and pushing his body to its absolute limits while likely in absolute agony just to do what he thinks is right, Micha in the good ending didnt kill Arthur nor did the beating he got, exhaustion did his body finally gave out after all the pushing Arthur did hence the like John: " Come on Arthur, keep pushing" Arthur: " Nawh, I-I think I've done pushed enough" also neither Arthur or John are ruthless and through out RDR2 Arthur expresses his intense distaste for Strauss' money lending and how it takes advantage of people, his grief of how angry he gets and the things he does while angry and how he hates killing for no reason, Arthur also has ALWAYS doubted Dutch from day one as early as Colter he was just much more meek and didn't push the subject when fought

The problem with the low honor ending of RDR 2 is that it kind of drops the ball on the character of Arthur, he ends up being almost as bad as Micah whereas high honor shows what makes Arthur so interesting : he's a good man doing bad things, not out of malice but out of care and loyalty for his people. As for the "the game naturaly shoves you to low honor"... If you skip all stranger missions in chapter 4 and 6 sure. But chapter 6 is the point where Arthur is disconnecting from Dutch and the game showers you non stop with high honor points because once he starts acting on his own, outside of Dutch's influence, he can be his true self. As Mary Linton, the love of his life and probably the person who knows his inner self best says "There's a good man in there, fighting with a Giant".

I didn't think about this until just recently, but I think the type of jobs the gang were up to in Blackwater at the start of RDR2 is very telling as well. Dutch and Micah are engaged in the ferry robbery, something that regardless of how well they pulled it off, would've probably still involved someone getting killed, most likely in the getaway. Whereas Hosea and Arthur were up to a real estate scam, something that if done well, probably wouldn't have involved any bloodshed. Thinking about this gave me the feeling that Arthur is someone who, unlike Micah, never just kills for the sake of killing or the enjoyment of it. Arthur did say he's killed people, but I get the sense, and even throughout the game's story itself, that he doesn't do so lightly. He would only do so in a form of self-defense, whether it be to himself or to the gang he calls family. I think that "Advertising - The New American Art" is a good example, where when what seems like an easy scam turns dangerous with the Lemoyne Raiders, Arthur is quick on the draw to not just defend himself, but Hosea as well. And when people do die under his watch, he has genuine reactions to it, whether be shock or sadness or even guilt. Plus, I wouldn't think a completely bad man through to the core, would have the kind of relationship hinted between him and Mary. If he was truly a rotten, bad person, Mary would have never written for his help in Jamie, because why would you want to dredge up someone from your past that was a completely bad and violent person? It would be the same as asking Micah for help instead...

I respectfully disagree with your opinion about the low honor ending being the likely destination to arthur's story, because unlike John whose journey to redemption was borne out of tbh selfishness(for himself and his family), Arthur's Journey was born out of a need for purpose, he saw his life coming to an end and wanted it to mean something, Arthur wasn't a bad man, he was a loyal man albeit in a misguided way, and he genuinely cared about the gang, sure he wasn't a "good man" at the beginning of the game but by the end he turned into one, that's why before the diagnosis you're just being told what to do, go beat up Mr downes etc., but after it you're given choices and an opportunity to look back on your past misdeeds and even to an extent fix them and help people, Arthur's Journey is one of the most poignant and thought provoking video game experiences ever, and sure the playing the low honor way is more liberating and fun in terms of gameplay, but isn't that life ? Taking the high road is often difficult and it's easier give into your bad tendencies

I prefer high honor but to quote a edgy movie for teens it only takes 4 or 5 moments to be a "hero" I feel like even with low honor Arthur gets that even with just playing the main story 1. You help the German Family 2. You help Eagle Flies and Rains Fall 3. You rescue John 4. You rescue Abigail 5. You help John escape Sure it's a feel good story that you help the needy and atone for all your sins but in the real world or in a natural story Arthur would probably be low honor. Plus it doesn't make sense that John would never mention a high honor Arthur.

Although I agree with you that johns search for redemption was rooted in selfishness (albeit for the good of his family), I believe that there is more substance in the story of someone who tries to change so that they may have a better life, than someone who changes because they suddenly see their life coming to an end. Since john didn’t need his looming death to seek redemption like Arthur did, I find his story much more compelling.

I seem to remember a camp conversation between John and Dutch in RDR2 where Dutch claims that John doesn't have the "grit" to make the tough calls, but here in RDR1 we see just how wrong Dutch was.

The fact that Arthur’s character and dialogue changes based on honor proves that high honor only changes how Arthur sees himself. If you finish the story with low honor, Arthur dies never knowing that he can be a good person. If you finish with high honor, he doesn’t need to be redeemed in anyone else’s eyes as long as he is at peace with who he is, and that is a good man who was fighting a giant.

I play the game everytime on low honor and he dies with knowing he gave his all to get the ones he loves out of there and succeeds he just is much less direct about how he is trying to change and it’s more up to the player to see it, and personally I like that more. Low and high honor Arthur aren’t that much different really at the end of the day in terms of character.

The thing is that if you play a high honor play through (or even a low honor play through) you'll see all the times that most of the time he makes the "good choice" when given the chance. He's been manipulated sense he was a child he, but he is naturally a caring person.

I always took John’s final Dead Eye not as a maybe we have a chance but as “I’m not going down easy” or “I’ll take down as many as I can before they take me”. To me, as soon as he peaked out and saw them he knew it was over. But he wanted it over on his terms, wanted to make sure Abigail and Jack wouldn’t be taken by the government again, like they might be if he ran away with them. John made the choice to end things at the barn, and end it how he wanted: as an outlaw

In RDR2 it is important to remember that your honor rating affects more than just the ending. When you play Arthur with high honor he will often talk about protecting the women and johns family in many cutscenes but if you play with low honor then he will talk more about getting money and being selfish. Because you played him with low honor it did seem like the natural progression was an evil man and that it wouldn't make sense for him to be redeemed in only a few months but if you played him as high honor then the game naturally progresses more towards the high honor ending. Both endings are fair and I would never say one is more correct than the other (unless Rockstar states concretely which one is the canon ending) but if I had to choose which one felt better to see I would go with the high honor ending all day

He's follow Dutch for years and did whatever the gang needed done. From what I remember (been about a year or 2 since I played the whole story so sorry if this is wrong) there's never a moment where Arthur does more pain to others than what was needed except for those moments when you get to choose what you do. A good example is the start of the game where you get the choice of what to do with the O driscol that ambushes you in the barn. In chapter 4-6 you can see Arthur starting to disconnect from Dutch and he finally becomes/acts like he actually is instead of a blind dog just told what to do. At least that's how I understood it

Arthur’s ending is 100% the high honour ending. Arthur is insanely loyal to the gang (“I would kill for it, I would happily die for it”) but that doesn’t mean he’s a bad person. He does what he does because he loves his people and wants to provide for them and protect them. Which is why the high honour storyline with Arthur choosing to try and save as many of the gang as he can at the end makes so much more sense. He’s smart enough to see that Dutch is off the deep end and that people need to run or die.

I just want to preface this little rant with the fact that I respect your opinion, and that it shows RDR2s power that so many different people get so many different things out of the game. While Arthur's honour goes low if one just plays the main story, if one does the side missions as well, it becomes high. This, in my opinion, represents Arthur's journey in the game. He steps outside of the gang, and begins to see his wrongdoings, highlighted by it's downward spiral. Those side missions introduced later in the game see Arthur doing far more honourable actions, rarely giving monetary rewards like those at the beginning. This is contrasted by the shooting-gallery nature of the later main story missions. I think that playing the main story only (which I did during my first playthrough), gives you only half of Arthur's journey. However, you mentioned that the ammends Arthur tries to make at the end of the game do not atone for a life of murder, robbery, and general awfulness, and that the low honour ending is more realistic, and representative of the world we live in. Maybe it's just because I'm young and naive, but I find that a very pessimistic outlook. The high honour ending represents an optimistic outlook; that one should always make the effort to be a better person, no matter their past. That you shouldn't let who you were dictate who you are. One might call high honour Arthur a hippocrit for thinking himself above Micah and Dutch, but often a hippocrit is just a person who is in the process of changing. I prefer the high honour ending, as it is gives a message of hope and happiness, and I disagree that it is unrealistic, as Arthur still dies. It is representative of a world that is more hopeful than ours can seem at times, but still one that we live in none the less. Great video, it helped me appreciate this game more than I did before.

As much as I love this game, part of me would love to see them remake this game in RDR2 as like DLC that can only be played once you finish the epilogue. The majority of the map is there and it may finally answer where john is coming from when he gets off his boat which is something that bothered me between realizing that if he was coming from his home to Blackwater, he would never step foot on that boat at the start..... hell he should be more familiar with the starting area of the game than he is.

I always just assumed that John, Abigail and Jack were all arrested and taken to either Saint Denis or Sisika, and then Ross decided to have John hunt down the old gang, so brought him back to Blackwater

My idea was Uncle was blackout drunk and John was away for some reason. Maybe getting things for his farm. Abigail and John are taken. John gets a telegram saying to come to Saint Denis. He travels there and is told to hunt down Bill, Javier and Dutch. This is where Ross and Archer take John and get on a boat and go to Blackwater. RDR1 starts.

Interesting take on Dutch's death, I always figured that it was just him finally realizing that Arthur and Hosea were right all along, that they had plenty of chances to leave it all behind them and start anew but he simply chose not to out of ego or to continue living his western adventure. He finally realized that all of it was his doing, that the actions HE personally took brought the whole thing down, that he has nobody else to blame but himself. It might also be him admitting that he probably would have made the same choices if given the chance since his ,,nature" wouldn't have allowed him otherwise, basically telling us that the gang under his leadership was doomed no matter what. I still like your take, though.

I only played RDR1 after 2. I love how that one mission in 2's epilogue has John in the same pose as 1's cover art. And I think we can all agree that Landon Ricketts is the best character in the series. His line "I was the fastest in my time. I must've been. I'm the only one left" ties into that stranger mission in 2 where you duel the legendary gunslingers.

Agreed. I've always wondered the differences between those that played rdr2 to 1 and vice versa. Thing is I think it's prevalent to remember that the gunslingers side mission was a way to show how fame isn't always deserved even if it is given. The missions made sure to show that a few of the those gunslingers like Calloway, Granger and Midnight were not to be as big as they seemed might not have deserved the recognition they were awarded. But it also showed those that there were still a few of them that did deserve that fame they earned like Black Belle, Finch and Ricketts. Goes to show that whether or not Arthur/John killed those duelists, it might not have even changed who the top killers really were of their time.

Seeing your take on the ending you got with Arthur made me reflect even more on the beauty of rdr2. I had happened to become super connected and was dead set on him getting the high honor ending because it’s what I felt he deserved, and you having the low honor one had confused me. But hearing your take made me think even more about having other experiences with the game and how no matter what ending you get it will still fit you, because it reflects your play. RE: the thing you said about 2's ending and how the story kinda forces you to be low honour - i think thats the point? Arthur contantly tells us hes not a good man, Dutch frequently calls him a mindless killer like thats a good thing, Arthur mentions how he has a battle inside him of good and evil - to get the high honor ending you *have* to go out of your way to be a good person, its an effort, you have to help people who arent just in the gang. who arent just dutch. Theres a reason honor gains or losses are doubled in chapter 6 where Arthur truely understands what his life has been and what really matters. To get the High Honour ending you have to push back against the narrative, push back against everything Dutch tell you to do, against nature of the world as Dutch might say - and i really like that. For me, High Honour is where *I* see Arthur ending up natrurally, a not so good man turning his back on his "nature" (read: what dutch taught him was his nature) to be better. Reminds me of that paarthurnax quote: “What is better - To be born good, or to overcome your evil nature though great effort?” and that kinda sums up the end of RDR2 for me

Interesting detail I never noticed before; in the train cutscene intro, Bonnie is on the train! For some reason she switches seats too, first she’s sat with a guy behind those two old ladies, then is later in the cutscene sat in front of Jenny and that man.

This is my all-time favorite game; an annual play for me. I adore the zaniness of the first act (similar to the Spaghetti Western era), the high stakes of the second in Mexico (more akin to classic Westerns), and the grit and tear-jerking of the last (comparable to modern Westerns like Unforgiven). The story just culminates so well with a lot of strong themes ebbing in and out as the plot progresses and, on a more meta-level, as I age. I adored ten years ago the cool factor of John as he gains fame. Now, on my most recent playthrough, I feel like the father-to-son relationship to Jack and conversely with Dutch really shone through for me; the song upon reaching Beechers Hope just felt sublime. It's all topped off with gameplay that still (mostly) holds up, especially going after all the outfits for their unique abilities. Shout out to anyone else who purposely have save files for John with all the outfits pre-Ranching and one with Jack!

Imo the High honor ending for Arthur feels more like a what if ending than the canon ending for him. However, the High Honor ending feels more deserve / earned if you did all the optional honor missions.

It's interesting that you point about that RDR2 makes you earn low honor points. And how that hints to Low Honor being the intended ending. When, I think you've not only got it wrong, but missed the point of Arthur entirely. Sure, Arthur is an outlaw. But if you take a moment to listen to how he talks in game, you'll know that Arthur only doing this, because the world dealt him the hand that led him there. Everything he does is to protect his family, he's not in it for the money. Not in the long run, and it's been made clear that Arthur is there because he loves Dutch, Hosea, and the gang, sure he doesn't like Micah, but everyone else he cares about. He drops whatever he's doing if it means helping those he loves. But Just sticking the story of RDR2 is not how one gets to experience Arthur Morgan. The world, the random encounters. Those show the truth behind Arthur, a good man, fighting his morality to do what needs to be done. The low honor that comes into Arthur's life is because Dutch set him on the path to earn it. The game drives you down that path BECAUSE YOUR focus was on progression, and not the wider world. The wider world shows, as I said, a man with morals, trying to swallow them. The entire point of RDR2 is to show the demon behind Dutch, and show that Arthur was the one that started to see it, and choose to save those he can at the end.

Years after I beat the story I still remember almost everything about it. Mainly using my revolver, the fact mine happened at night, making it feel even more cinematic. The feeling of dread that you knew he'd die but at the same time the glimmer of hope of maybe he'll live.

there is a bigger difference with high honour arthur then low honour arthur other than him looking at the sunset. high honour arthur goes out of his way to help strangers and the people he loves. low honour arthur is basically micah, but with a code of honour to the gang. high honour arthur earns his redemption by righting his wrongs. low honour arthur is a bitter killer that dosent try to change. when arthur gets diagnosed with tb the objective of the game shifts from "protect the gang" to "am i ok with dying?"

The good ending of Arthur is a call back to a conversation between him and Hosea in camp where they are talking about where they want to die Arthur said that he wants to die on a mountain facing west to remember the good times he had there with the gang , so the ending is really a way to get Arthur his "best outcome" of the end of the Van Der Linde Gang (and also it's just so more inpectfull on the first playthrough than just seeing him get shot in the head)

The fact that it is possible to find redemption but Arthur pays for it with his life and John doesn't get to enjoy the fruits of his own redemption for long. It makes both of their stories all the more tragic. John could not fulfill the sacrifice of his brother and live a better life.

Nah, I think Arthur's high honor ending is supposed to be the "Canon" ending. He eventually died as a good man in the eyes of John and helped to shape him into the man we see in RDR1. Its all about redemption.

I think Arthur's destination was just to save John, not get shot like a dog. It's just left to the player to decide if Arthur was a man who cared about money and himself or a man who cared about the ones he was close to. Also that's the entire point of the game's title "Red Dead Redemption" because the point of it was that it's never too late for redemption.

Good video, but I'm gonna say at least this: your actions are what dictate your honor level in rdr2. If you always pick the nicer option (let the guy who remembers you live, help Sadie with the o'driscolls, absolve the debt and give money to the widow and her kid, etc.) Your honor will stay high. Especially if you never rob or kill any random people outside of missions. You're right though, at the end, you pick the one ending *you* really want. But I still think Arthur's true ending is by the mountain and facing the sunrise. He wasn't acting good in his life, but he's also a victim of some severe brainwashing from Dutch. He did the things he did because he truly believed it was the one and only right way for things to go. But even as soon as the first or second chapter, he gets put into situations where he sees the things that Dutch made him ignore through the years. It's why many people during the story call him a "good man". He is one at heart, but has had his nature twisted and damaged by Dutch raising him. God bless Hosea for keeping his better nature alive indirectly by being the voice of reason. Even after his death, it sort of forced Arthur to become that new voice of reason in the gang. It's just a shame that his voice wasn't enough to save more members.

I tend to disagree with your assessment of Arthur. I've always looked at it as he was born a good person, with a good heart, but his environment and upbringing led him down a bad path where he did do very bad things. Of course, we're all responsible in the end for our actions, but we just can't ignore the effects our environment has on us. He came to see Dutch as a father, he trusted that Dutch truly was virtuous and that his way was the right way. He was wrong, obviously, and eventually he realized that and tried to make it right. Had he been a truly bad person, he would've never tried to help John, it wouldn't have mattered to him in the least bit, but it did. A truly cold person would've done nothing but worry about themselves at that point, he did the opposite. So Idk, I disagree with your take on Arthur.

I agree that the Traumatic Head Injury Crash from RDR 2 does undercut Dutches character development. That being said, my father suffered from a traumatic brain injury after large tumor was removed. And their portrayal of Dutch's decline was absolutely on the money. When someone gets an injury like that it can change them into a different person. They look the same and sound the same but the person they were simply isn't there anymore. It's like a familiar stranger if that makes sense. Watching Arthur try to talk sense into Dutch in the caves with the old lady broke me. So, while I agree it does cheapen his character arch somewhat, it was still beautifully done. Whoever wrote that knew the subject well, unfortunately.

I personally believe that the cannon ending of RDR2 is the high honor ending for multiple reasons. The main one however is that it shows how Aurthur stayed true to the gangs beginning ideals and how he fought to remain a good man. I think that the reason your honor naturally gets lower is because of how the gang is changing and how its not as easy to do the good things that Aurthur does because it goes agenst what the gang had become. Aurthur remained true to his ideals and his principles with or without the gang, and those ideals led John and his family to escape Bever Hollow.

One of the things I loved the most about the games was the horse movement. It was so good to see that they had worked on realistic animation, as someone who's grown up riding horses but also can not help but notice if horses move correctly in games, I loved it because they got it right and not to forget, they gave them good form too. (a horse with a big butt, is a good horse to ride :D)

I don't know why you are saying there aren't high honor decisions baked into rdr2s story. We have all of the Raine's fall missions and the debt missions to raise the honor. General story missions rarely lower it (I can think of 2 times) so it has no reason to be low unless you go out of your way to do so

You don't get the story of read dead 2 Arthur "Thought" that he was a bad man , but others thought differently, that being the reason of Hosea trusting Arthur the most , the ending in which he gets to see the sunrise is the ending that Arthur himself wanted as he said that in a side event in which Hosea , Lenny and Tilly talks about how they want to die , Arthur said "face me to the west so I can remember all the fine times we had that way"

It’s implied in the first game that The Blackwater Massacre IS the job where the gang abandoned him. Instead there’s a whole character arc between that and when he’s left to die.
