The reason they proudly stated they were New Yorkers in Spider-Man 1 was because it was a post-9/11 sentiment. "This is New York! You mess with one of us, you mess with all of us!"

Tobias 'Big Mo' Logan the whole basis behind Spider-Man being released right after 9/11 was to give New Yorkers especially the kids in the city to have something to be proud of and have pride (not that there wasn’t already a lot of already after the tragedy). Marvel was instantly enabled however after 9/11 to release the movie
@superanimeniac6 жыл бұрын
uh...no, the original spider-man was already scheduled to be released in like...november. In fact, early trailers actually showed spider-man stopping bank robbers by webbing their helicopter between the twin towers. The reason there's a crapton of american flags was because they were edited in for 9/11 patriotism.

Maybe Ock is still a good man but now the arms have gained sentience and are out for revenge against Spider-Man.

I miss the days when everything didn’t have to be a cinematic universe. They could actually build a solid trilogy of movies about ONE superhero, instead of having to take into account how they would build the cinematic universe. I know people have some negative opinions about the 3rd one, but it’s still relatively solid in comparison with other more recent comic adaptations. There’s a reason why Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy and Raimi’s Spider-Man series are generally at the top of people’s lists. They focused on a self-contained storyline.
@paulb43345 жыл бұрын
To be fair I remember people complaining about the age of the TRILOGY back then and saying they missed the time of simple single good movies ;). To be fair, the Trilogies or Series are still more common overall, since few Franchises can draw from basically 80 years of source Material. Also it's pretty clear that the 'Studio' pushed their own Agenda that clashed with the bigger vision whereas in the MCU everything is Babylon 5-level orchestrated.

I think Homecoming can compete with the best of Raimi. Not beat it necessarily but compete. And yeah I think the shared universe does rob writers and directors of a little freedom but it kind of takes that debt and multiplies it for the big Avenger type movies that tie it all in. It's still maturing in the comics they often write stories with minimal interaction; I would be just fine with a very brief little handwave as to why no one else can help and it does open alot of options. Nolans Dark Knight though just dripped with quality in every regards, that wasnt exactly a shared universe kind of thing that was every aspect and element.

This film is fantastic, not even in the MCU it had nothing more to prove yet it did. To think that this movie sacrificed half the films run time to show the hard ships of the life of Peter Parker instead of Spider-Man. And still maintain an intriguing Story, Characters, and execution in the action is beyond what a lot of today's superhero movies lack today. Yes there are great movies similar but they don't reach this caliber to where it goes places it has never explored during that time. This movie was ahead of its time. And I'm dying to see if Homecoming can reciprocate something to this.

Matpat did an amazing theory that the reason Spiderman lost and later regained his powers was because of PTSD. When seeing the evidence, it actually makes the movie better since you could see Peter Parker as not just a relatable teen/young adult, but also as someone who goes through tragic hardships that scarred him for life yet was able to live a great life with his friends and family.
@tutin40903 жыл бұрын
Of course, this kid was launched into a world of fighting terror and witnessing the brutal death of a man was friendly with in Norman, as well as his own guardian in Ben, and he would've had so much doubt over his own actions in practically murdering the crook that night. No young lad realistically could handle that in the space of a handful of months
@TrueMentorGuidingMoonlight2 жыл бұрын
I would go further and make a hypothesis that only Peter’s active abilities turned off (temporarily). I mean, super durability is something you can’t turn off on a dime, because your muscles and bones stay dense and only deteriorate with disease or age, neither of which Peter went through in the movie. So that is why I believe he didn’t get massively injured or killed by his failed building jump. Super strength is a tricky one; I think maybe it works off the concept of the human body’s natural limiters and the idea that when extremely stressed, you can lift a car. Meaning that super strength is more of an active ability, and Peter’s PTSD ruined his body enough that he couldn’t activate the adrenaline and other body chemicals to be Spider-Man. The webs turned off because his body needs to produce it, and the PTSD inhibited his brain chemicals, and thus his body, from making the web fluid in his arms. That’s how I interpret it. Regardless of how incorrect my guesses are, I still have to love that Peter’s metaphorical kryptonite isn’t something stupid, but rather something painfully realistic and relatable.

I really thought Homecoming was going to be up there with Civil War or Winter Soldier, but after trailer 3 I'm really worried. Wait a minute. Are we being Age of Ultroned? Set up this dark actually threatening scenario and villain just to take a left turn into silly jokesville. Villain starts off menacing and turns out to be a jokey guy himself. What I'm trying to get at is, AOU set us up for one type of movie and gave us something completely different. It was still good but, it could have been amazing if they kept the original tone. Oh God! Tony Stark's in it. Start off with a dark tone only to turn it silly. Are going to Mandarin us? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Upon re-watching these first two films just today, I have to put this down as a win in my books: I know the character of MJ gets some flak for sort of just being a plot catalyst, especially in the first film, and that her character could have been explored more (which is true because Dunst knocks the role out of the park... also I definitely realized on re-watching how much this role informed my early sexuality, but that's neither here nor there...), but now being older and having more experience with people than when I was a kid, I realize just how good an actress she really is. She's playing the roles that people ask her to play. Her father abuses her and expects her to be the doting daughter, Flash and later Harry both want her to fill their expectations of her. It isn't until she's faced with the choice in the second film to choose between filling the role of ostensibly a trophy wife at the end of Spider-Man 2, or following her heart and going after Peter that she chooses to stop being the actress for everyone and be with the one person who she's always known doesn't expect her to be anything other than herself. And that's what makes her, actually, a stronger person than Peter. As soon as she decides to follow her heart she does it, whereas half the film is spent on Pete's decision to stop being Spider-Man and his back and forth with himself, and it takes multiple pushes for him to actually put the mask back on. As much as I wish more time could have been spent on the character, and admittedly there's a lot of reading deep into single lines of dialogue, I don't think the character of MJ is as shallow as it's often made out to be.
@LukeLovesRose6 жыл бұрын
My thoughts exactly. Their love scene at the end of Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2 are like the end of Casablanca for comic book movies. I especially love her dialogue at the end of this movie. "Isn't it about time somebody saved your life?" That would definitely go on my list of great things in this masterwork.
@rikudoubapeck6 жыл бұрын
MJ isn't shallow at all. In fact I'm currently in an argument with someone on reddit explaining why MJ is the best/most developed love interest in any superhero film.
@MrSandroengland6 жыл бұрын
It's contradictory how you brand MJ as not having enough screen time/development but you were still able to take so much from her. A bit more of MJ and the title of the movie would've changed to Peter & Mary
@KRSsven5 жыл бұрын
Only people who have swallowed the strange aggressive attitude today's society has towards female characters would say she's a plot catalyst. She's not. MJ is simply a person trying to do the best in life. She's surrounded by larger than life comic book characters! Peter is Spider-Man, Harry is the inheritor of a huge fortune and lives like a playboy, and multiple super-villains use her to get to Spider-Man. MJ is trying to get by, live her own dream of being an actress...she's just living her life. In the story, she is a love interest because that's where her life intersects with Spider-Man's. If Spider-Man was somebody else, MJ wouldn't even be IN the story. Today, female characters have to be smart, confident, capable etc etc so they can't be seen as 'lacking' compared to any male character. But no male character is good at everything, even in superhero stories. So we end up with Mary Sues that are actually more intelligent and capable than the actual characters the stories are about. It shows most in the redundant ASM films, when Gwen Stacy becomes a starring character in her own right, is super-capable and helps out Spider-Man with everything. It feels weird because these films are about Peter/SM, but Gwen is thrust into a starring role alongside the title character. The only way it could be taken further is if Gwen somehow became a superhero herself, like the alternate universe Spider-Gwen.

Doctor Octopus was always my favorite Spidey villain, and this movie portrayed him -- especially in the fight scenes -- perfectly. I'm 56 years old, and remember a time well before they could put superheroes on the big screen (or the TV screen, for that matter) and do justice to it. The exciting still-images in a Marvel comic, well, they just couldn't replicate that in live-action scenes. Nowadays, with CGI and expert stunt-work, they CAN make a Marvel comic come to life, and when they have a great script with great characters, they can begin to realize what our imaginations only could've done back in the day. Seeing Spidey battling Doc Ock amongst New York City skyscrapers -- and especially the train sequence -- man, that was a dream-come-true for a a Marvel fan from way back.

I’m surprised this channel didn’t recognize that Sam raimi specifically directed the hospital/surgery scene as a nod to his evil dead films. The zoom in to the chainsaw, the quick camera zooms to the face, the nurse screaming while being dragged into the darkness and the first person view of the robotic arms which is the exact same as the first person shots of the evil moving through the forest.

This is my favorite Spider-Man movie of all time. It greatly explores the conflict between Peter Parker and Spider-Man. The way Spidey's powers failed due to psychological issues and emotional trauma/stress was perfect. I'm glad they didn't go with some Macguffin like Kryptonite or a "Neogenic Recombinator" to achieve this. It was that crowning moment of character development and closure when he finally got his powers back, when his responsibilities caught up to him ;) I also love the way Tobey played a "loser" that Peter Parker was here. He wasn't some dashingly handsome prince waiting to become a knight in shining armor. He wasn't a skateboarding punk with popularity and an obnoxious way of displaying his intelligence (*cough cough* Andrew Garfield). He was the everyman, of sorts, before getting bitten by the spider. He was the kind of character who had to earn everything after suffering so much; he was never handed anything except the powers. And even then, those powers came with strings attached, so it wasn't like Spidey was a Gary Stu in that sense.

I think one of the most underrated win that this movie gets is the first shot and the last shot of the movie. The first shot shows Mary Jane on the left side of a billboard that has a white background while the last shot shows Mary Jane on the right side of an aging house that looks decrepit. I interpret this as Mary Jane growing as a character and finally being able to understand the situation Peter is in(not sure of this though).

"Sometimes we have to be steady, and give up the thing we want the most, even our dreams." Peter kept his love for MJ bottled up, and he lost his power, as it was really all in his head. But once he finally gave up what he wanted most (to be with her), he gave a final answer, and said he didn't love her. He may not have been telling the truth, but he let it out, it was no longer bottled up. As soon as he gave up what he wanted, his power returned, as we saw his spider sense kick in.
