(When I grew older, I reached towards every leadership role possible, and disciplined myself to be a good leader.) My sister wasn't so keen on the Kelvin timeline films, but she encouraged me to watch them nonetheless. I adored them even more, simply because my friends wanted to watch them with me, and I could steer them to original Trek. I'll always be grateful to the Kelvin timeliness films.

Great video, but you kind of gloss over one thing a lot of people seem to miss. They all argue about "prime timeline" vs "kelvin timeline" and complain about Abrams' reboot without seeming to realize that by having Nimoy's Spock time-travel, they keep the prime timeline in canon. There is no "either/or". Therefore Abrams' Star Trek is _not_ a reboot, it's a pre-sequel, the 11th movie in the ongoing series, not the first movie in a new series.

it IS a reboot, in that a reboot is a film/series/whatever that breaths new life into a dead or dying franchise. a reboot CAN be canon and even a sequel. but i thought it was genius to do it the way they did here. as as you said, the original timeline is still canon.

+Clayton Courtney ~ I'll admit it's a bit of a clumsy term, but afaik there's no existing term for it. It's a "prequel" in that it takes place before prime canon TOS, but it's a "sequel" in that it also takes place some time _after_ 'Star Trek: Insurrection' in prime timeline chronology. In fact, one kind of abstract way to look at it is; instead of thinking of it as Spock going to the past, think of it more like the past got pulled up to Spock's present. The closest analogy I can think of would be the ancient way they used to move heavy objects by rolling them forward on logs, and when the rearmost log came out from the back, it got moved to the front and started the same journey again, only this time over different ground.

The Romulans and Spock traveling back in time created the new timeline, or alternate universe, so they are stuck in the new timeline. People travel back and forth with alternate timelines in Star Trek all the time.

As an OG Star Trek fan, I think you are missing the point on what JJ "Lens flare" Abrahams actually achieved. He rebooted this franchise in the ONLY way possible to appease old fans (that get what I'm about to say), and new followers (that have no idea what I am saying) of this awesome universe. He created an ALTERNATE timeline. Nothing was reset. This is it's own thing. No one needs to froth. Nothing was undone. As soon as that huge Romulan mining ship appeared through a singularity and devastated the Kelvin...everything changed. From that point on, as James Tiberius Kirk was being born, there was a split. (And before anyone goes ballistic, OG Spock also went through a worm hole. That's why he is in this movie. JJ is not a dummy, so save your rantings. There are TWO Spocks, like in this movie...as well as TWO kirks, the other Kirk did not go through a wormhole...HELLO?) JJ, in one fail swoop, just established that everything that we know and love about this franchise still exists...somewhere, in all of it's "Kahn" screaming Shatner glory, but he also puts forth: "Here's what could have happened...with a bigger budget." That's worth like...756 wins. Seriously. As a reboot...this could not have been done any better or with more reverence to the the established universe that came before him...and the casting was absolutely phenomenal. JJ nailed it...Three times. JJ is a genius...with a box...of mystery. lol. I hope he makes more. (Please, JJ...after the Star Wars thingy...make more of these) And Pine...in any timeline, ends up in a wheelchair. See what I mean? These multiverse things are difficult to get your head around. I do not fault you. It's complex. Like JJ.

I love JJ Abrams. I think he's just one of those under-appreciated directors in the business. Really love Force Awakens, it's just a shame The Last Jedi turned the Sequel Trilogy into a disjointed mess. Things were going great until they killed off Luke Skywalker, as well as Snoke.

I don't get why people hate the Kelvin timeline. Star Trek has used time travel and alternate dimensions in every iteration. I cant remember the name of TNG episode where Worf keeps going between alternate dimensions where he's married to Troy but if you can accept the multiverse then a universe where the Kelvin is destroyed has to exist. Maybe they should have done what Marvel and DC do and given this version a number. I love Superman as a hero but I also enjoyed the Injustice storyline a lot. In TOS there is a universe where the Federation is evil. Wait. Did DC get the Injustice idea from Star Trek? Combining Star Trek and DC maybe this is the Flashpoint Federation. I'm way off topic.

I doubt it. The multiverse/many-worlds concept goes back a long way so I doubt that injustice got the idea from Star Trek, but if they did, I'll add it to the long list of things Star Trek has brought into the world (like Star Wars!) and that still receives attention. Although Star Trek and Marvel are apparently semi-canon together (Star Trek/X-Men crossover), so I wouldn't be surprised if Star Trek and DC exist together somewhere as well XD.

Because Worf goes back to his correct, original timeline. The "Kelvin Timeline" not only negates all the fun of the original stories, but it's sloppy. Why does Nero want to get revenge when he could simply use the opportunity to prevent the disaster in the first place? Why does a mining vessel have such effective weapons against warships? Why is anyone surprised the Romulan sun exploded when such things would have centuries of warning? Why is the Enterprise built on Earth? Why is young Kirk racing a car, listening to the Beastie Boys? That would be like a teen today speeding off in a covered wagon, blasting Johann Sebastian Bach...so edgy!!! Horrible movie.

Hungry Hungry Hobo the Star Wars theme has absolutely no emotion in it apart from the Force Theme. This theme gives u the chills... Makes u want to get out there and see the wonder of the universe around us. The opening theme of Star Wars sounds like a military march. As i said, no emotion except for ur nostalgia clouding ur judgement. If u wanyt a goid theme, fill it with some real emotion and not some blaring military march. Thats why I dont really like Star Wars theme or the 1978 Superman theme. They dont give u any feels and feel too cartoonish

Dune was the original literary Sci-Fi classic, Star Trek was the original TV Sci-Fi classic, and while Star Wars started as the original film Sci-Fi classic (other than Star Trek: The Motion Picture and Wrath of Khan), it evolved into the Space Fantasy sub-genre. Also, CinemaWins didn’t constrain his love of Star Trek, so I wasn’t surprised when he revealed his love for Star Trek at the end of the video.

As a DIE HARD fan of Star Trek since I was a kid I grew up watching TNG DS9 Voyager TOS Enterprise and all the movies, this was a great tribute to the franchise. I loved this movie when it came out and the following movie Into Darkness. Unfortunately Star Trek Beyond didn't quite reach the same level, even though I do like it. +CinemaWins what I love about this movie, and into darkness, is that they make Star Trek mainstream. I'm a huge fan of Star Trek, but none of my friends used to be. When they saw those two movies, they saw a fun action blockbusters, which is something everyone loves these days. But at the same time, the movies introduced them to the concept of Star Trek, and made them want to see the shows. Are the reboot movies full Star Trek? No. But they told new stories in a manor the fits the times we live in.

One of the things I appreciate is that this reboot never "overrode" the original one. The events at the start of the movie _split_ the timeline into the main timeline and the Kelvin timeline. With the various series, Discovery, Picard, Lower Decks and Prodigy all staying in the main timeline, it's clear that nothing has been erased.

YAY! A fellow TNG lover! Although I started on TOS back in the 80s rerun syndication - followed by the premier of Wrath of Khan on HBO at my grandpa's house in 1982, my 'coming of age' generation Star Trek was - in fact - The Next Gen. Personally, my favorite character was DeLancie's Q. He was the bookends to the TNG who completed the series 'circle of life.' Plus, DeLancie also guest starred on DS9 (getting punched by Sisko) and Voyager (in the civil war of the Q arc that eventually introduced Keagan DeLancie as Q2 - Q's son and real life son), thus tying the triad of the three series together. And, no. No one will ever, ever replace Nimoy! Man, my heart still aches when I think of him. (And Anton Yelchin as well, who was a great young Kyle Reese in that one Terminator movie which nobody speaks of... besides Genysis). Oh - and I LOVE the new Trek reboots.... and Star Wars. I'm not really sure how people can be dark side and light side about their love/hate relationship of Star Trek versus Star Wars. What, no gray area? TNG Episode name drop! Anyway, comparing the two sci-fi giants are akin to comparing apples and oranges. While there is space, space-ships, and aliens in both syndications - neither Star Wars nor Star Trek revolve around the same time span, universe, or mythos === Hey! Apples and oranges are both fruit, but neither look nor taste the same, right? And a person can still love both, right? ---> ST & SW's unifying connection are actually Lucas' Industrial Light & Magic, whom were credited for the FX on both the Star Wars movies and the Original Trek & Reboot Trek movies.

I remember seeing it with my sister Cara opening weekend My late father really liked it on dvd too There’s so many great action scenes of the space battles, lots of callbacks and inside references to the franchise, the acting is amazing from everyone involved bringing the characters to life, and a great amount of laughs JJ Abrams and the writers have even made their own ways of using time travel, alternate realities, and rewriting history This definitely came as a shock to many since the filmmakers took a big risk by resetting the timeline making so many changes, in a way the older movies happened but this is the Enterprise Crew going on a different path than what they were originally intended giving them modern sensibilities and “human” desires bringing enough steamy friction All the actors perfectly bring these characters we know and love to life in a new fashion Michael Giacchino’s score can be very bombastic at times, like really scale it back a bit plus the movie does slow down a lot during the middle Still it provides great visuals, surefire thrills, a well-made fun adventure, and paved the way for many of these actors making $385.7 million worldwide even winning an Oscar for best makeup It doesn’t alienate casual viewers while still catering to the hardcore fans And it’s incredible this got made the way it did considering Hollywood was suffering another writers strike almost halting production Abrams and writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman manage to successfully reboot this series creating the kind of popcorn excitement you’d expect; they even remind the audience that heroes still bleed, they also love but also make mistakes It delivers almost everything you want in a summer movie while also respecting the franchise that has endured for over 60 years This is the movie that made me a bonafide Trekkie for life! Most would argue it might even be better than Wrath of Khan

Nice job with this. TNG followed closely by DS9 are my favorite series too. And I also enjoy both Star Wars and Star Trek, both Picard and Kirk, and so forth. I may _prefer_ Star Trek and Picard, but that doesn't mean I also like the other. The squabbling by fans on one side versus the other quickly gets old.

what if the point is not one or the other. why can't they make sense in one, star trek universe wich the new movies don`t. picking and choosing what elements of how the trek universe works instead changing it to look stupid and flashy rather than just spicing up the cannon tec little. I agree with almost everything you have to say in this. I feel the same way about the Kelvin Timeline movies as you do. (Though the Refit Connie is still my favorite. The new one is nice, but not quite there...) However, *how could you not win the Enterprise rising from Titan?!* I know that it’s not the most sensible thing to edit warp right in to an atmosphere (then again there’s that scene in Voyage Home...) but that is by far the *best* shot of the Enterprise in the entire movie! It’s shot from this Enterprise’s best angle, has the score done perfectly, and the red clouds parting away looked incredible! I’m shocked that you didn’t win that... (*Yes* I know I’m really behind on posting this...)

I agree. I have not watched the TOS, or TNG, But I have seen many shows and movies depicting starships, and I have to say, Abram’s Enterprise rising from Titan, was the most beautiful. The moment I saw her pull it off, I came to realize... This is the Enterprise that is to live up to the original Enterprise who did an excellent job living up to her Namesake, CV-6 Enterprise who defied fate in the second World War. Beautifully done.

I saw this film FOUR times in the theatre. Blew my mind. Bought the disc and have watched it repeatedly since then. My ONLY gripe is the water pipe scene SHOT IN A BREWERY... it takes me out of the film. Other than that, it's epic brilliance... the opening, nero and the scale of the Romulan ship, the mud-flea gag, the free-fall down the drill, the ice monster, the Red Matter, Quinto-Spock really wrestling with his two heritages, and more. I just adore watching both cinemawins and cinemasins! I love cinemasins for the sarcasm and obvious humor to not-as-obvious "flaws". It's also a great way to watch and maybe get out some of the frustrations with continuity with movies that people gloss over or whatever. Cinemawins is great for some feel good and overall/specific moments in the movies that they "win". Cinemawins is also a great way to get/experience the morals/meanings of the movies and how well they cover these. Both channels are great!!!! Keep it up!

I love the positive nature of this channel and watch a few vids each week (and always let the ads play too lol). While I think the bulk of new timeline is hysterical and eye rolling, there's no denying that the cast is really good and the near star wars-esque look and special effects, at long last, are fantastic and way overdue. With the exception of Rogue and Empire, I always thought the message of ST was better than SW. No magic and drama within two families, just science and people caring for something bigger than themselves. (I'm the weirdo among my nerd friends by liking TNG and Voyager, so I'm sure the SW/ST thing will only add to that lol.) Again though, this channel is such a welcome place to relax, see things differently and learn some good trivia too, and do it without raging fanboys or overly fawning ones either. Well done.

I really like those other Star Trek series too. Since I started out loving Star Trek as a young teen in the mid-1960s, seeing it continue has been wonderful. When the original was cancelled after only 3 years, I didn’t ever expect to see it again. Back then when a show got the axe, it was depressing because reruns were not common and usually a show just died.

You are one of the few people who seemed to get the reverse exploration of Kirk and Spock's characters, which was one of the biggest joys for me. Kirk is learning control. Learning logic. Learning to be responsible and to think before acting. His entire character arc in the first 2 movies is based around this. By the same token, Spock's character in the alternate timeline is leaning way more towards his human side, learning to struggle with deep emotions and emotional responses. Any of us who are trekkies know how dangerous this is for Vulcans. Seeing Spock daringly go down this path is both fun and very interesting. They don't hide it either. There is a great scene in Into Darkness where Spock admits his deep feelings to Uhura. Then later in the movie, the rage Khan inspires in him, and how he blatantly goes after Khan, letting his emotion take over and the rage making him a formidable adversary to Khan hand to hand. That moment is eluded to earlier on when Khan tells Spock "You can't even break a rule how would you be expected to break bone?" Into Darkness was a HIGHLY underrated movie in my opinion PLEASE while I'm sure it is already on your itinerary do a cinema wins vid for that movie as well. I love your channel and even more respect for you being a trekkie. Thanks and cheers!

In highschool I watched this movie. After talking about it with an old friend, who was a full blown trekkie at the time, he let me borrow all 7 seasons of his TNG DVDs. I lost interest at around season 3, but a year later I picked it up again on my own and have never stopped since. I'm 25 now, turning 26 next month, and I've blown through all of TNG, followed by DS9, the original series, and am now working on Voyager. In all honesty my life has never been the same and, despite the occasional campy acting and special effects, Star Trek has enriched my life in ways that I'll never be able to fully explain in words.

Not a huge Star Trek fan, but I might try and watch some episodes before I make final judgments. Anyway, not what my comment is about. I think it's great that you're not like the people completely incapable of tolerating the other content in a universe/IP. Star Trek is great, even if I don't enjoy it as much as other stuff, and liking one or both of the shows doesn't mean you're any more or less of a fan. Enjoy what you enjoy. One thing that I would suggest is skipping the original series and going straight to The Next Generation. And be prepared to think. I love TNG because it's more about philosophy, human nature, and a hopeful look at what humanity should be. Sure, there is plenty of doofy stuff with reversing polarities and graviton pulses and whatnot, but when you look past that, TNG is great.

By the time I watched TOS I just couldn't get past the cheesy visual effects, occasionally silly writing, and the horrendous fight choreography. Don't get me wrong, I respect TOS and am happy to acknowledge its enormous cultural impact and the fact that none of the Trek I like would exist without it. I am one of those Trekkies who discovered Star Trek via J.J.'s 2009 reboot, and thus will always be partial to the Kelvin Timeline. (I have nothing against the other shows/timeline, but J.J.'s Kelvin was my first.) My dad has been and always will be a TOS Trekkie, but for some reason never shared his fandom with me. It was only after my brother picked up ST'09 that I realized what I was missing out on. I am constantly astounded by just how well J.J. incorporated, not just TOS, but TNG, Enterprise, DS9, and Voyager into his reboot without simply remaking each series or being entirely too obvious in his parallels and quotes. One of my favorite things in this movie is that each of the main characters got their individual moments to shine, and they each played a specific part in the success of the operation. My wife, who otherwise does not even like sci-fi, loved this movie and saw it multiple times in the theater.

dj2neo In a world full of spaceships, where they have the capability to build in space, they would. Which makes it odd that they would do it on Earth. It's less convenient and prone to more problems that could just be crossed out entirely if they were in a weightless environment. Building a spaceship in space makes more sense.

There is a large amount of stress placed on any body when it is gravity. After it is built, you would then need the ship to be able to lift itself out of the planet's gravity far enough that it can fall around the planet (orbit). Unless you plan to land the giant ship on other planets, it does not make sense to incorporate the large amount of downwards thrust to achieve this for the first launch.
