I really enjoyed the film. It was one of the best comic book adaptations I've seen. It was a beautifully shot movie. The attention to detail was great. The details were fantastic. The film was a good action film. Laureline wasn't just eye candy or a helpless damsel to provide a plot for Valerian. Overall it was good entertainment, like most of his films.
@konnosx12136 жыл бұрын
Maxx B ok, I'll be the asshole to point out whats wrong with this movie... keep in mind, i've never read the comic and I don't hate anyone who liked it 1.The plot makes no sense, sidequests aside, the plan of the pearls is stupid, they live in a utopia that accepts every alien species (even canibals) and they know everything about this utopia and their policies so why don't they simply talk to the humans and expose general Triggerhappy instead of creating a planet building cult just to get a few square kilometres of beach... I know this would make a boring movie but what I am trying to say is that the current plot of the movie made no sense 2. The world felt vast but it was still generic, quantity over quality, we learn nothing about most alien races apart from, if it's ugly shoot it, if it's fuckable don't... Even the pearls are obvious avatar rip offs. And because they had each concept artist working separately the movie feels like a mixture of aesthetics that don't add up... 3. Rihanna

AGREED I loved this movie.
@emmalane35286 жыл бұрын
have you actually read a single Valerian book ?
@nathanjora76276 жыл бұрын
Konnos X, Rihanna was not a problem, although Valerian’s impersonator was, and some of Lauteline last sentences (when she talk about love and trust) are just... stop it Laureline, it resembles nothing we saw in the comics or the movie. As for the Pearls’s plan... I wouldn’t have put a fingertip in the capital of the confederation that blew up my planet, especially if the species that did it is so powerful in the said confederation. For the alien species not being explored enough, that doesn’t bother me at all. Look at Star Wars, first and last episodes : if you except the prelogy, you don’t learn a lot of things about aliens of this universe really, and it’s fine. Although it would certainly be better to do it late « Valerian and Laureline » style and make them immerge in an alien culture (alien=/=human here) and using this immersion to really help them out, it’s fine to do it early « Valerian and Laureline » style and just making them solving problems without having much experience with the culture they are dealing with (because the problems don’t stem for the said culture). And everything feeling generic... 1) don’t agree and 2) we are talking about a guy who took part in setting the standards about what should look how in sci fi, adapting a comic book that set the iconic standards of the sci fi genre Bessons explored in the cinema. So it’s a bit like saying « urf, 2001 a space odyssey is so cliche, with all this white, and cleanliness, and an evil AI » Of course there is a risk of it seeming generic, because it (Valerian and Laureline+Besson) originally set the standards for what is generic. Only in part, of course, and it’s not an excuse that I would accept after this first movie, if he is ever gonna do a second (which I really hope, but doesn’t have much confidence in) he needs to something that feels more different and innovative in its writing (because I feel like it’s where the genericness stems from).

Laureline is a Sociopath. She plays it to the hilt. Literally. Nobody noticed, because she's a girl, but that's why there's no "Chemisty" between them. They're soldiers, a Narcissist, and a Sociopath. Cold blooded killer. They don't do "Chemistry." She teases him with the "Love" carrot on a stick, then pokes him with it, sadistically. It's how he introduces her character.
@angshumanbora89746 жыл бұрын
Damn... thats a cool theory... or is it an actual thing in the comics?
@Psiberzerker6 жыл бұрын
Explicit? No, and she was a lot less sociopathic in the comics. I mean in the movie, look at her attitudes about sex, love, killing, caring, about the only time she showed any emotion is when she got snagged by the baiterfly, and that was massively out of character. Or anger, Valerian actually cares more about the refugees, and grows from the experience (Of literally having a Princess inside him) so he actually has to use the Emotional argument to get her onboard. Then later she turns that argument around to get him to help the Pearls. IDK if that was her direction, but she definitely played it like a cold sociopath. Considering this is Luc "La Femme Nikita" Besson, I'm suspecting he did it deliberately. People don't notice the Emotional role reversal, because it's subtle. The Physical reversal of Leelu being a supreme being, and Corbin being able to keep up, is blatant. It's a halmark of Luc Besson's work, the abused child who's family is annihilated wanting to become a "Professional" as another example.
@Psiberzerker6 жыл бұрын
Okay, look at the extremely brief Bubble arc. It's at a strip club, and it looks like a boner on Valerian's part, but then he turns it around, "Frees" her, and that's probably the most emotional beat in the film until the climax. Now, imagine Laureline in there. Imagine her delivering that emotion watching Bubble die in her arms (Shape shifter, she could have pulled a Magic Mike) Or, would she move on, having served it's purpose? Valerian learned that there was something greater than himself, and even attempted the Self Sacrifice, as the Narcissist. Would Laureline? She would sacrifice him, but would she sacrifice her for even an entire race of strangers? I don't think so, but as you pointed out, that's just a theory.
@angshumanbora89746 жыл бұрын
Psiberzerker Now that you say about it, it seems plausible. I thought Laureline's emotional response at the end seemed out of character, but I guessed it was due to inconsistency. It does seem like sociopathic if you really think about.
@Psiberzerker6 жыл бұрын
At the very end, when she "Warms up to him?" Okay, there's 2 plausible theories on this: Either she's affecting "My hero!' because she's horny, and kinda didn't not promise, and the other is the instant redemption, which falls kinda stale for me. Either way, it bookends the adventures in between.

I know this is late but I would love the main two actors to play a cocky brother sister duo. I got that vibe from them in the beginning and overall that's the chemistry they have. It would probably have to be a comedy movie, or an action film that doesn't take itself too seriously.

I’m definitely in agreement: I enjoyed this film. It wasn’t earth-shatteringly anything, but it was good and enjoyable enough (and original enough) that I’d actually watch it again. I don’t really understand why it bombed as hard as it did. But then we see that the best products aren’t always those that rise to the top, and vica-versa.

I really enjoyed this movie too. It's not the great but it's a fun sci-fi flick you can watch every now and then. I also think this is the 2017 equivalent to John Carter; both ambitious sci-fi films that got mixed reception from critics, based on popular literature material, made by directors who were huge fans of the books and wanted to launch a huge franchise from them. However, due to poor marketing from their respective studios, Disney and Lionsgate, both bombed at the box office thus cancelling the planned franchises. While I think Valerian is good, John Carter I love. Anyone agree/disagree?
@grayscribe13426 жыл бұрын
Valerian and John Carter have something in common, other movies have 'borrowed' a lot of material. Valerian had the freedom to go beyond the comics and a crazy director making it work. John Carter got a basic 'good guy vs. bad guy save the princess' story. The sad thing is, having read the original, John Carter had the backdrop to be really interesting.

Absolutely loved this movie. It gave me that watching Star Wars for the first time feeling like pretty much no other movie ever did. Well, Jupiter Ascending tried, and had some good ideas, but it was a mess. This... it still is a bit of a mess, but it has way more great moments, and it even has a decent plot. Not a big fan of Dane in it, but Cara was wonderful. And we've seen bigger actors do worse in a green screen movie. I really hope this movie picks up steam, enough so that it warants another. Even if it has a smaller budget. I think what made the CGI scenes so good was that they had time. They had a decent budget, and no pressure to release the movie, like, tomorrow. That's why in the Marvel movies for example the CGI sometimes looks unfinished. Basically that is because, well, it is unfinished.

I waited a hole year for this movie to come out and in my opinion it was great! I think that maybe if the movie was released in the 90's and even if the CGI effects weren't that great, it would have been a smashing hit. The problem is that nowadays people are making so many movies that you have to have a truely unique story or an excellent approach to the visual side of your film in order to please most of the viewers. Sad, but true. Awesome review by the way, I just subscribed!

I believe that the clouds and rocks have similar colors because the planet looks like a desert with the city being in a digital realm, so the clouds aren’t really water like on earth. I have three possible theories, that ether the clouds are dust particles clumped with what little water vapor there is. the rocks are similar to dry ice and go directly from solid to a gas and they, other then state of matter, have similar molecular composition. Or the planet has a smaller periodic table then earth and the rocks and clouds, once again, have similar composition.

The fact that some people think every movie has to be deep and make some sort of STATEMENT makes me think those people are shallow and desperate for meaning in their lives. I want fun and happy endings and this movie delivers. I also loved the Fifth Element and was thrilled to see that Luc Besson had created another dense, mind boggling, imaginative universe, based on earth's potential future. Although both universes were hundreds of years into the future, they both contained familiar elements that grounded the stories in reality. The Chinese junk food vendor in Fifth Element was CLASSIC! Ethan Hawke as the cowboy pimp was also CLASSIC! I Love this movie and watch it on a regular basis when I just need some fast moving FUN.

fair point with bubble thought the pearls seem self explanatory being powerful part of their planet and are integral part of the (who the fuck are they again) life's, I am also sure they elaborate on the pearls to a decent extent and commander Arün Filitt doesn't seem like that good of a villain sure they where getting fucked up but couldn't they have just retreated? I mean they weren't boxed in nor did they really need to keep fighting full force they could have tried some other tacit to beat those aliens at another time, right?

It's important to remember the exposition dump entering the city. It totally disengaged me as a viewer. I think that was the worst scene in the entire movie. It was an exhausting few minutes of background of the city not really necessary to anything at all. The characters should already know that information. I admit, it was a visually stunning scene but we see the same set pieces not long after in positions tipsy from the way they were described. This could have been weaved into one slightly slower paced scene as a creative pano. No dialogue necessary, our imaginations could fill in the blanks.

I really liked this film. Whether it's because of being raised of The Fifth Element, my already high tolerance for various movies others hate, or the actual merits of the movie itself. I take everything at face value. I'm not really into comics of any kind, and most of the time I don't end up reading book series until after the movie comes out. So everything I watch is brand new and exciting. There's been very few movies I've watched that I end up hating. So few that I can't even name one. I felt like the way they moved the plot felt realistic to the type of world they were trying to build. I was enamoured by the scenery and designs in the first minute after they revealed Mul. Just the similarities to the Na'vi while also having a completely different kind of coexistence with their environment was completely fascinating and made me yearn for it to be be real. I find that the movies I like most are the ones I can almost feel myself in. Moving with the characters as they flow with the story. The only thing I would really change is having more screen time for the Pearls, just because I love them so much. Even more after finding out how they survived in the city and learned all those years. Just growing stronger in order to build a new home that they desperately deserve and the reveal in the end just makes you root for them even more. Not every movie can be flawlessly acted or directed. You can clearly see their effort to work with their budget in packing in as much action and effects where it would count most while also keeping that alien/human intermingling feel throughout the movie. You get flashes of the militaristic humans alongside diverse and captivating alien species of all shapes and sizes. I think anyone that hasn't watched the entire movie is really missing out on a hidden gem. Not sure why everyone hates it so much, but they can think whatever they want. TLDR; Pearls are awesome, I want five and we'll move to Pandora. Aliens are cool, and the haters can suck it.
