It's Finally OFFICIAL - We Have Started Building Our BARNDOMINIUM - Using Timbers From Our Sawmill

In this video, it's finally here - Greg and Brian (Greg's friend) start setting the brackets for the timbers, and building our barndominium has officially started! They also gather all of the timbers needed for the first bent and begin planing them - it's a heavy machine, but it sure is doing its job.
We are excited to have finally started building! There's a lot to get done this month - we have a goal to raise all 8 bents at the end of this month, so some hard work needs to happen before... planing and getting the pieces of the bents all put together, ready to go up! We have some great family and friends helping and are thankful this has started!
We are milling our barndominium - barn house out of wood that we are milling on our own sawmill. If you haven't followed along with our BARN Build, (which is now our barn house build) make sure to check out that series in our playlists. We finished the first slab last summer, we milled most of the timbers needed over this past winter/spring, added plumbing, put in a second slab for our garage and now we have started building our barndominium - barnhouse - lodge - our home.

***We are also so excited to have completed our sawmill cover enclosure (sawmill shed). Definitely check out our Sawmill Playlist to watch it all happen. We have shared the process of building our sawmill cover from the very beginning. We have a Woodland Mills HM130 Max sawmill and we live in North Idaho. The sawmill cover / sawmill shed is vital to continue milling for our barn build in the winter months, but it will also be a great way to keep out of the sun during the summer months, and of course all of the rain, in between!

Here are the specs on the sawmill cover / sawmill shed we built:
3 posts in the front
4 posts in the back
Overall dimensions are 15 feet wide by 36 feet long
Longest beam is 28 feet
Front part of the lean to roof is 11'9" and back is 8'
It will have a 3 :12 pitch
Posts and beams are going to be 7 1/2" x 7 1/2"

Hi, Butch- Brian is a good friend of my dad’s that is going to help for a few weeks. He comes with some framing experience and quite a bit of construction experience. And he is fun to have around but at the same time is a “do-er”. He was in a video way back- he cut down our BIG ponderosa that had the top out of it. 😁

There’s just something about watching a dream coming true and knowing all of the hard work that came before it. Building your own home isn’t the same as winning a gold medal, but it’s still pretty cool! 😁 🥇

You can get special glasses that allow you to see the laser even in broad daylight. It's pretty inexpensive. Sometimes it's even included with the laser.

Looking good. Take a few minutes at the end of the day and watch your video with the thought in mind of "where can I work more efficiently"? It's hard to be busy working and thinking about how to do it better. When you watch yourself on the video it's much easier to look at it with a fresh set of eyes. Thanks for bringing us along. @@ourdreaminthewoods I find that once we get the process figured out, the best thing I can do is make sure that everyone else has what they need so that they can keep working. If there is 1 or 2 other people, it is easy to be part of the team. If there is 5 other people, just make sure they have what they need before they need it. If the whole crew has to stop because one person doesn't have something, it makes for a long day.

Good housekeeping on the job site makes finding materials and tools much easier, and greatly improves safety. You're doing a fantastic job on that.

Hi, KJ- You’re going to see a few questionable safety things going on out there. Every time I think… KJ isn’t going to like this. But we are trying our best to be safe. 😌

Great work! I recommend leaving it at 2 bolts anchoring the bracket to the concrete. The other holes are there Only if you need them for corners etc. Having wedge anchors installed too close together may weaken the concrete.

Another great video! A suggestion...make yourself a rack/platform/stand for the planer to sit on at the end of the pass. Doesn't have to be fancy, a piece of plywood or board, big and stout enough to support the planer. Take a piece of sticker or similar, and screw it to the end of the board so you can prop either the front or back of the planer up while it quits spinning. Cheers!

Thank you, Jimbo- Thought it would be nice to have it a little ways from the slab. Then someone could be planing and not bothering the people working on the slab. But in the end it could have went right where you are saying. Only 15 more 6x8s to plane and that will do it for the center section. 😁

You'll stream-line your methods as you go. Suggestion: Have two long beams set towards the outside of the sawhorses, plane down one length then back the other direction on the other one. Also an elbow pointing down from the planer would be beneficial. IMHO. Looking great so far!

Thank you! Makes sense with two sawhorses set up. That thing is a beast and might need the rest while walking back. Only have 15 6x8s left for the center section. Not really sure about the elbow pointing down on the planer - is that those metal tabs at the front?

Howdy y’all- y’all are coming together with it. If you are making two passes with the planer make the first pass pushing with your right arm and turn the planer around at the end of the pass and plane the second pass going back the other direction. If the planer tries to cut heavier on one side you will be able to keep the timber flat and square. Don’t know if all that made any sense lol. I’ve pushed one of them and it can get tiring. Keep pounding and it will come together. H God bless

@@ourdreaminthewoods I don’t think it would hurt a bit. I occasionally will put some was on the bed of my big planer at the shop, especially if I’m planing some pine. I use Simple Green to clean sole of my planer l plane logs and timbers with. You don’t want to get it down in the bearings. Blessings to y’all

Hi- So far that is my favorite purchase besides the sawmill. It took me awhile to pull the trigger and buy one but it’s awesome. It’s definitely spendy, but so far it’s worth it. It’s a Timbercart from Grigg’s Timbercarts. We share a little more about it in our previous video. 😁
