I’ve decided I save more by shopping the brands directly during their own sales. Pat McGrath 30% off site wide, as does Charlotte Tilbury. Most brands - drugstore and luxury - have sales more often and with more of a discount than Sephora even at Rouge level. And I find it interesting that youtubers have a whole genre of VIB sales videos but we never see “hey Pat McGrath is 30% off, here are things I love that you might love”. Thank you, Hannah, for always keeping things grounded in reality for us! It’s appreciated and refreshing.

Here's the thing: both you and Amazon be are right, just partially. Amazon is right under the circumstance of buying something you would guaranteed be buying down the line, like your usual toothpaste or soap etc. Being able to afford buying in bulk is how the upper middle class save a bunch of money. You are right in the absolute sense, because obviously more money spent is absolutely more money spent. Amazon and other retailers twist things for sales and contribute to confusing and taking advantage of people who do not have the luck to be taught this by a parent. I was an adult when I fully understood not just your view but also what retailers were grossly twisting

There’s a line from Community, “it won’t change the way mustard tastes.” It’s such a comical, absurd saying, but it stuck to my brain. Nothing in makeup is make or break, and nothing is urgent. Sure, I’ve been day dreaming about the Metropolis palette for over a year, but it’s not going to change my life. I already have 3 ND palettes. Even if it disappeared tomorrow and I could never have it, the sadness is small and okay. It’s okay to be a little bummed, it wont change the way mustard tastes.(despite its beautiful mustard tones)

I'm one of those ppl who actually prefers Sephora sale to brand sales, even though it's at a lower discount. I have 3 reasons: one, I like the flexibility of having access to so many different brands; two, deluxe samples at Sephora allows me to try a lot of things for "free" and therefore saves me money, and I only buy when there is a good deluxe sample I really want; three, I don't want to leave my email and information at dozens of different brands.

It depends on how you look at it. If you spend $84 a month at Sephora, you're rouge. That is a lot, but for me, a lot of that is spent on family & friends' birthdays & Christmas. I'm not proud of it, but when you shop for a lot of women (myself included) throughout the year, it adds up quicker than you think. So, as much guilt & embarrassment as I may have about reaching rouge status, I'm also happy when I see the joy & glee on the faces of the women I love when they open Sephora gifts. Just offering my perspective. But, you're right, it is a lot of money that could definitely be spent better elsewhere. But, I like to spoil people with girly things. 🤷🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️

I love that you are making my favorite point. When faced with sales do the actual math. 20 percent off 39 dollars is 7.80 so you are still in the thirty dollar range. If you are buying a 400 dollar item you are getting 80 dollars off so you are still paying 320 dollars. Go to the brand website sign up for their email and then wait for a 40% or more sale. Sephora isn't worth it.

Yay, a low-buy year sounds great! It might be interesting to do a short no-buy to kick it off, just to get in the headspace. I personally find a total spending moratorium to be weirdly easier than a budget or a low-buy. I think it's because when the answer to "should I buy this?" is a stone-cold, unequivocal "NO," it takes away a huge amount of emotional work and decision-making. Whichever combo you choose, I'm sure you will do amazing! 🎉

This is so helpful, as usual. Recently I’ve been thinking about “seasonal self-care,” or ways that I can take care of myself for the unique challenges of the fall/winter season (e.g. early sunsets). I hadn’t yet thought about how much of a need there is for financial self-care during this season! I’ve been almost dreading the holiday sales, because I have a number of things I (sort of) need and many things I want, but the price tag of all these things in one or two months is bananas. This video pulls the pin on the temptation and the sense that I better buy everything I can think of *because it’s on sale*. Thanks for another great video!
@sarahh40823 жыл бұрын
A caveat to Cynthias comment, related specifically to the Sephora sale, is that you have to spend $1000 each year to even qualify for 20% off. So …. You’re spending, let’s say $500 at each sale with 20% off equaling a yearly savings of $200. Idk if that’s the bar we should be accepting in the name of financial health or as a definition a “good” sale, or a sale that is worthy of this much airtime on social media. This is a cash cow for Sephora plain and simple. I used to buy my staples during the sale but have started divesting from Sephora as the primary place where I spend my beauty dollars. Now I look for cheaper dupes or brand sales through their sites. This has resulted in me NOT SPENDING $1000 on total yearly beauty purchase in the first place. I credit Hannah and Lauren Mae Beauty for giving me the much needed intervention into letting Sephora heavily influence my purchasing habits and financial health ❤️❤️❤️

Loved this video as always - and find myself at a happy middle of You and Cynthia that feels healthy: I love to shop throughout the year but also almost always get things on sale. The key is knowing just how often sales occur between Sephora, individual brands, and other retailers. I can have a large wishlist of items I have my eye on but I’m willing to wait until a sale pops up that allows me to acquire an item or two in a financially healthy way. I dont love the idea of splurging only twice a year, especially since big carts usually result in excess items that I don’t really need, but a bit of patience can tide me over until the next brand sale/promo code/etc. In the meantime, the wishlist remains a dynamic front where items can fade out and be added without ever affecting my bank account. thanks again for another great video!
@figurista_blog3 жыл бұрын
I guess you didn’t understand Sintia’s point. Sephora sale is twice a year - but it is not only sale and shop! I NEVER shop full price. There is always a sale somewhere, a coupon code, an offer etc. I shop year around but always on sale and I think Sintia meant the same. And also - Sephora has only 10-20% off, but many other brand shops and sites have 40% and more! If you buy what you want half price - this is pretty significant saving. Sephora is not the only and definitely not the best place to shop 😏
@mizshellytee3 жыл бұрын
And even on Sephora itself they often have a small selection of products for half off outside their twice-a-year sales. Also: if you're someone who uses Rakuten to get cash back on purchases, or if you have an Acorns account and use the Chrome extension to invest a percentage of purchase price instead, those percentages (particularly on Rakuten) during off-sale times are usually better. And sometimes percentage back is better on individual brands' sites overall.
@Trish09783 жыл бұрын
I think there's a mid-ground in the type of shopper you've talked about in terms of shopping throughout the year vs shopping the sale, but it does require being controlled during a sale such that you're not chucking things in you're cart just because there's a sale and only getting things you'd planned to get (either because you were going to get them anyway or because you wouldn't get them at full price but you knew for sure you still wanted them). Sales are only worth it if you're getting things you planned to get at a cheaper price. If you end up picking up stuff you wouldn't have bought otherwise, you're just spending money. The way my parents taught me to look at sales was to ask myself if the item was worth the "sale" price rather than think of it in terms of "saving" money (and to ALWAYS include shipping and tax in the cost of the item) -- for example "is the ND retro palette worth $56 plus tax to me (assuming I get the 15% discount during the VIB sale & have free shipping)?" If the answer is no, then "saving money" with a discount or not, it's not worth it. It also means I don't want the item that much lol

I just love love love your perspective on spending. I also never let myself get pressured by a sale. Companies try to make it urgent that we buy now, and that is never the truth. Thanks for sharing your perspective. ❤ Most brands have equal if not better discounts on their websites during the year, so even if the goal is to save, you usually save more buying items from individual web sites. The sale can be fun, but certainly isn't the end all be all. People should do what makes them happy. I usually shop one of the two sales a year and buy from brand sites throughout the year as well. You're a smart young woman. Love that we can share and support individual decisions. That's beautiful.

I cannot believe how you keep coming up with new thoughts and strategies to talk about makeup sales and savings. I think I’m a true mix of a „Hannah“ and a „Cynthia“ in the sense that I truly feel little urgency about buying something immediately. A lot of times I plan on there being a window of time that does not let me purchase the thing immediately - either saving it in an open tab and waiting for a sale Or starting a search on a second hand platform. Because even though I have already decided if a thing is within my spending possibilities waiting for a time at which it costs slightly less is the time i need to make sure I want the item. The only exceptions are the things I consider tools (like foundation or skin care) that I use in the daily rather than an accessory (I.e. shiny sparkly colorful things) and those are always worth spending the full price on because they are staples that fit my requirements of being simple, affordable and reliable. Most of the time when I revisit the thing I originally wanted to buy I spent the time in between reevaluating what I already own and if it even fulfills something I cannot yet do or even the promise of it being something new has no longer a hold over me. And if I regularly keep revisiting the item even before there’s a sale or I found it second hand and I have kept wanting for it (I recall my intense wish for a dependable black lipstick a year ago) I will just buy it without feeling bad. Sales and coupon codes are an added bonus to me when I’ve already decided on buying (and I love looking for student coupons don’t get me wrong) but the extra 2-5€ are usually never the thing that get me to buy the thing, just an added bonus. (And the same goes for free shipping after spending a certain amount but that’s a whole topic for another day)

Smidge's collar is cute! My current spending strategy is to save things I think I want, either in a wishlist or in my head, until I either decide I don't want them or I get a chance to buy it cheaper. Or, rarely, I actually feel the absence of the thing in my life and go ahead with it. Those are usually skincare or the cheaper/ drugstore versions of things. In any case, I always enjoy your videos like this. It's great to have a make up channel with a focus on saving rather than spending. 🙏 Truly love your content. Such valid points. I did pick up a few items, but it was skincare, items that I use throughout the winter months & that last me a solid 6mths (sometimes more). I didn't go crazy as I've done in the past, it was really a question of "be logical- what do you need? Are there better deals elsewhere? Do you have items now to suffice?" It's not always easy because we all get caught up in the marketing of "this item will change your life" Sometimes they do, but not always. I realized that as much as I adore makeup, the beauty of it, I rather have more experiences - a nice dinner, movie night, museum tour, travel, a beautiful article of clothing. It resonated with me so much when you broke down what the cost for lispticks would be vs. investing in a gorgeous sweater that you will have for years to come. This is an important video that conjures up the thinking we should all be doing when it comes to purchasing makeup. Or more like OVER purchasing makeup. ESP when every other beauty youtuber is telling us to buy buy buy. I’m grateful that ur vocalizing of being more mindful of our spending Bc let’s face it, if we adore makeup, we have more than we can use. I’m totally guilty! I appreciate u bringing my wallet back down to Earth😝!!!

Thank you, Hannah. When I first started watching KZbin and was introduced to the Sephora Sale, I would find myself confused between influencers wishlists, what was in their cart, and what they ended up buying. For a long time, I was sucked into the hype. Your channel and your experiences have provided me with clarity. 🙂

While I don't do this with makeup because I've developed a good relationship with my purchasing now, I do this *all the time* with grocery shopping! Sales on those fancy looking jars or interesting flavor combos. I'm finally realizing just take a photo and if I still think about it and I can plan it into my meal plan, then just buy it full price WHEN I'm going to use it. It's not grim it's inspiring!!

The purchases I made during the sale were the items I was needing/running out of. A new item I had been wanting to try for a year, a pack of lipsticks I have been wanting for a long time. I had to remove items that I knew I didn’t need at this moment, knew that I could wait on that purchase. Because I do know that the savings is barely a sale like you pointed out. I did go crazy with the sale last year and chose to be smarter about it this year. Only getting what I was already going to buy.

I need your eye look tutorial! Also you convinced me to buy some jd glow cosmetics and I’m really happy with their eyeshadows, not so much their loose highlighters. I agree that this is not a sale, a sale isn’t a sale to me unless it’s like 30 percent hahahaha. I’d LOVE to see your favorite indie highlighters and blushes btw!

Hi Hannah!! Great video this was such a well-reasoned reminder not to get sucked in by the sale tactics!! Also - my husband and I had a 6 hour drive to visit family today and we spent a good amount of time vibing in the car to your Sexotheque Spotify playlist. He's obsessed!! Thanks for everything!! Love you!!

your videos at sale season are always refreshing, but i feel like especially so this year -- i've seen so many (shameless) ads for sephora by youtubers this year. i've started skipping the sale in the past couple years thanks to you and thank god! i am *not* noticing that i'm going broke from buying the things i really want at full price (or steeper discounts than sephora ever offers --i'm a cynthia much of the time), and i'm also not hurting for more makeup, or less satisfied with my life than I would be if i spent hundreds at the sale the way i used to. it's a scam!!
@HannahLouisePoston3 жыл бұрын
"I'm not going broke from buying the things I really want at full price" I love this! Because there's something about sale time that makes us feel like we WILL. But in my past, that feeling caused me to go broke during sale time buying things I didn't really want!

I made a Sephora order a couple of days ago (the sale wouldn't start for me until next week since I'm only a humble Beauty Insider) of some stuff I'm going to need soon plus a couple things I wanted to try (one of which I chose from the point perks). For most of us who aren't at Rouge level, sales that individual brands do throughout the year are better.

Oof this is what I needed to hear. When you were talking about how you won't let Sephora break your spending dormancy... I did that :( I've been so good with not buying eyeshadow (it's been months!!) but I convinced myself that the new ND face/eye palette would be valuable to my collection and that I could splurge this one time, because it would be on sale. I don't know if it is actually valuable since I didn't even try to dupe it like I normally would. With that, and some Christmas gifts, and buying a small restock of my skincare, I'm down $200+. I'm going to take this as a lesson, not be too hard on myself, but definitely force myself to rewatch this video before the next sale tempts me! You're totally right about how the sale doesn't make enough of a difference to justify spending that amount right now.
@HannahLouisePoston3 жыл бұрын
yes, don't be too hard on yourself! It's experiences like this that inform future decision-making, I've had lots of them in my past and I probably still have some in my future! It's so much better to be down $200 every once in a while and be like "huh, I kind of regret that" instead of constantly being thousands of dollars in debt like I was before my no-buy year. I think we're both doing great

This video has arrived just in time to save me from some pre-black friday sales. Also, I would like to say that these anti-hauls type of videos are my favorites. I came for the no-buy challenge era and although makeup it's not really my thing I still keep up with the channel just to enjoy your opinions on things, so every time you post budget/finance related content I love even more.

I love this video. I love this conversation. I am not a Cynthia and I am not (yet) a Hannah. I have been buying too much and I am really honestly considering to have a LOW buy year. Where I only allow myself a specific budget on beauty, something like you have done that 1 year. Because I'm finding myself buying and buying and not being happy with overspending cycle. I really appreciate videos like these. It's helping me ground myself more and stop to think. So thank you. 💓

Thank you for this video. I have been talking myself in-and-out of a HUGE purchase for weeks now and you just reiterated all the reasons why my brain was telling me NO. I am definitely going to skip out on that and spend my money on other things that will bring more to my life instead.

Second comment: watched the video and I want to say thank you again. Thank you for being smart and being able to articulate it to people like me who think in my mind the sale isnt that great, but go ahead and fill my cart anyways because everyone says it's such a good deal, so it must be. I must just be missing something and maybe if I buy these things, save the money on them and get them, maybe then I will understand what a good deal it is. But I don't and I usually hate myself for it. To the point where I have even hidden the makeup I've bought from myself so I don't have to look at it and be reminded that I blew my money yet again and am broke and have to pay my phone bill from my savings account. So just thank you. I hope you really know what a big help your videos have been for me.

Thank you Hannah as always for this type of content!! You and others like you are the reason I’ve gotten out of debt and now set aside a disposable income to spend and splurge on things I want. I’m in a wedding and I was going to buy a couple pair of lashes (I’m choosing to do my own makeup - I did my own for my own wedding because I know what I like and how I want it done lol). Then I saw the email about the sale, and the lashes I’m grabbing are Sephora’s brand so I saw that all of their stuff will be 30% off. So I thought “well I budgeted and planned to buy them anyways, so me saving 30% on something I was planning and budgeted to pay full price for is a great deal for me.” I also had a Rare Beauty item on my Christmas wish list for this year. So I decided since it was already on my list and allocated to the Christmas budget my husband and I set that I’d snag that too, since it’s full price was already planned and allocated for. I did start to randomly add other items that I thought “oh I’d like to use that.” And then after listening to your video it gave me a reminder: I wasn’t planning on buying this full price, nor budgeted for it, so why am I buying it just because I’ll save 15%? So I quickly removed those items lol I went from a $200 something cart back down to my $50 cart for the items I was planning on paying full price for anyways as planned 🥰 thank you as always for being that rational voice in my head that occasionally gets lost once in a blue moon lol

I just love that I’m watching this video at this moment! I WAS heading to Sephora..I stopped myself and put a lovely flower beauty lipstick on, and love that it’s here already! I wanted that new Huda palette, and the Pat McGrath holiday palette. (I rarely reach for last years).. I will use my indie sparkly shadows, and I’m going to use some of my beautiful palettes that I already have too! I don’t NEED more makeup to save a couple of bucks. (I also have $160 in Ulta points, and $20 off coupon.. if I’m feeling desperate, I’ll go spend those)
@beckybeighley2 жыл бұрын
my mom always points out a similar thing- like if you have to spend a certain amount to get free shipping, you usually end up spending more than you would have paid had you just paid shipping, or like when they dosales that are like- "buy more save more" bc the savings percentage is larger on paper, but in the end you've still spent more money overall, which is of course, exactly what they want

These sales are nice but kinda dangerous for me. I now have a wishlist of products that I write down and review. I try not to get swept up away in the rush of getting a 'supposedly' good deal, where in the end I spent more because everything's on a discount. There will be a new sale after Christmas or New Year, let's see if I still want the product then. Your consciousness videos really help with that. A lot of beauty YT-er had discount code so I finally did order what has been on my wishlist for a while now from Lethal cosmetics, but I limited it to 5 shadows. I made 3 makeup purchases this year and with discounts and gift cards I spent around 115$. Which is so awesome for me. The money I'm not spending, I'm saving for a little city trip around my birthday. Also since watching your style of videos and similar ones, I have a new found appreciation for what I own.

I love this video so very much ❤️ Control is terrifying in someone else's hands. My time dwindles away as I fall down Instagram shopping holes: one tiny ad in between friends' stories triggers 30 minutes of window shopping that I didn't schedule into my life. These sales create the same lack of control--I won't allow these retailers to tell me what to buy and when to buy it!
@thedylangirl3 жыл бұрын
I did this with the Patrick Ta blush palette. I got it two days before the sale because I knew that was the item I want right now and if I shop the sale I will just pile on more just because items. I’ve spent about $7-8 more this way, but saved untold riches by avoiding the sale. :) FWIW I have Janet Rust and They Met in Argentina in the matte and they are glorious. When you do allow yourself one, I know you would love Janet Rust.

Thanks for talking me off the ledge, Hannah. I had put two items in my Sephora cart, but hadn't made the purchase yet. One was an eyeshadow palette, and the last thing I need is another eyeshadow palette. The other is an item that I have in a mini, and I will definitely be buying the full-size. But I will get a better deal by waiting for the Black Friday sale from the brand, and that will be a better time for me to buy budget-wise anyway. I am somewhat of a Cynthia when it comes to shopping sales, but when a favorite sale comes along and I have literally nothing that I need to buy, I do struggle a bit with FOMO. Thanks for helping me shore up my defenses!
@quintecence3 жыл бұрын
Yes, I never buy things at full price unless it's cheap/something I use often. Most things I got this black friday have been on my wishlist for around a year. If I can't get a sale, I'll try and get cashback.. I also keep track of what I've bought, decluttered or used up to make sure I'm using everything and don't overspend

A really sobering and much needed input, thank you so much for reminding me what I should have considered before splurging on items I basically do not need. I could kick myself. And because we in Denmark have lousy return policy, I am stuck with my purchases…serves me right, I guess. It was a pleasure watching you!

I placed my order this morning but I am proud of myself as I picked up a bunch of things that I need and have wanted to try for a while. I also told myself no lip products no palettes/liners and no perfume as I want to finish some older things first and I can always get something I want in the future instead of having fomo. All of those things will go bad over time so I want to finish some things and those are where I am tempted. I also have a much better feeling about what I purchased because when I impulse shop it can give me buyer's remorse so freaking fast. I have learned I do not like that feeling.

It is because of your videos that I did not buy the Pat McGrath Holiday palette because I heard your voice in my head suggesting I dupe the vibes and my goodness, I had all the shades already in other palettes. I did buy a handful of other things that will be gifts for myself for Christmas and I truly believe I will enjoy and use each for a longtime to come. I set a budget and stuck to it….now to keep myself from placing additional purchases before the sale is over….like a Gucci lipstick….

Mee too I used to spend too much on make up and never went through what I had before buying something new. So my strategy now is, to ask myself ' do I already own something similar? ' and almost always the answer is yes.... So I give it a pass. There is always that much product you're gonna use and need, so I only buy the basics and maybe once a year only that one special extra product. And still, my drawers are fulll..... we're all different and we all have our own way to get ourselves through ... ❤️ Love your channel, btw
