This makes me think there is some metric out there which balances how something can be familiar enough whilst also being new and unique. e.g. Too familiar is cliche and too new is obscure. I suspect when something oversteps the ‘newness’ boundary, we start to see polarisation of interest. Tenet would be a good example of this I think
@KirbyFerguson3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, totally true. But those polarizing works are often the most influential and enduring.

This is a really fascinating exchange. I was recently struck by 'Don't Look Up' -- I found it incredibly moving but also hilarious in it's darkly accurate portrayal of where humanity finds itself in the current moment. It made me reflect on whether comedy with a big cast might be the most effective way to spread and/or help people digest hard truths. Usually grappling with the ideas it tackles is too depressing to reach mass audiences, but as they noted in the film itself, a healthy spoonful of sugar does indeed help the medicine go down.
@gabbar51ngh3 жыл бұрын
@@e7venjedi the movie seemed to be quite poor. Like trying to imitate independence day or Armageddon but failing at it. By the third & 2nd act, there was no plot as a base & story was relying upon completely on parodying & references in a way. Too much reliance over it & lack of an actual plot made it terrible. Only thing likeable was the star studded cast.

Welcome back! I recently was talking about your original series to someone and after googling it, found out that you were redoing it! With this video, I would go a step further and say that if something is original enough, it almost becomes unintelligible. I think of art movies like Enter the Void and Cremaster 3, which dive much more into originality, and because of that, they become bizarre and chaotic and really hard to follow. There is so much new there that there is nothing for your brain to latch onto. And yet both of these films _still_ pull a ton from previous movies and art works, from shots to themes. I think the closest thing we have to a completely original work is Finnegans Wake by Joyce, and it is completely unintelligible and _still_ has tons of recognizable references and influences.

I studied film in college and in my storytelling class, we had to do an exercise where we would take 5 films and apply the hero’s journey to it. We wrote a paper on it and picked one to share with the class. It’s crazy how every film, book, or even game, follow’s the hero’s journey. My professor even told us to use the hero’s journey in our own writing when writing film scripts.

I agree with the core concept but I have to point out that there's a difference between 'copying' as remix and inspiration and a tribute and connection, and the capitalist 'copying' (here for example, superhero movies, ESPECIALLY marvel & co) that is purely profit-driven, and is just soullessly reusing what they found was the most popular (=made the most money). those are not remixes, they're butchered and carelessly patched up tropes. antithetically to the former, the latter kills art. sure our attraction to the familiar plays a role, but that's definitely not the sole cause for what's happening in the movies world today. and saying that it is is not only erasing this problem, but also implying that it is what everybody desires, when that is far from the case.

I'm not the first to say, mainstream pop culture is like fast food. It's just great to consume, and has stuff in it most people like and can digest. We do like the new variations that pop up from time to time but the base product is always a burger. Consuming this regularly lets us forget how many spices and other ingredients there are in the world, that give us way deeper pleasure. That are more sophisticated. Like Indian food. It's not the weird thing that there is simple food, it's just a shame that it has become the main staple. I could go on and on with the comparisons and metaphores. The fact that a majority of modern human beings are content with having sugar, salt and fat on their plate boggles my mind. I personally wished it was different, but most certainly a change will never happen.

I always come back to this video series as a way of realigning my creative process, but I think this one broke me a little. I'm using an old and familiar form to understand the new and unknown, which means you have also used a familiar and old form to understand the new and unknown, which is a little brain hurty because the origin of said series was to recontextualize creativity, which is why I came here in the first place and, one could argue, why you started this series. It's all just the same input/output processes with different information, with different context and tools surrounding said information. Brain hurty.
