Your friend has a very good friend indeed. Nice to see the inner workings of the sawmill and your approach to fixing every step of the way. Also nice to see you don't just 'get a new part' if you can fix an existing one. I am a huge fan of fix it if you can.

It's simple to replace burnt coil wire. Just need to match new wire with same guage and length of old. Set up old part as a spool driven by drill or whatever to respool new wire evenly onto old part. Nothing to it really. Better and more durable than repairing several breaks on old spool. It can be quicker and easier too. I've reused wire from salvaged electronics that's in good condition. New wire is priced reasonably though.
