Theres actually so much more coming than this, because CDProjektRed is switching engines from their RedEngine to UE and in their developer diaries they already said they are already working with the UE team to take all the things that RedEngine does better than UE and to get those into the engine. RedEngine for instance is substantially better at multicore, so hopefully that is one of the things, Ray Reconstruction, etc.

The amount of misinformation floating around the web about this is crazy. - They are not "switching engine", they will continue work on their own engine while they first try and use UE5 for a Witcher 3 remake (being helped by another studio) and _MAYBE_ they will make the Witcher 4 in it if the Wither 3 remake will go well. - Companies don't tend to give away their secrets to others, especially if those others will give them away to everyone that wants to listen, you gotta consider the consequences of what you are saying, it would lead to direct competitors being able to read/copy their work, so while some CDPR dev might have had a good chat with some Epic dev where both of them think that they will share more work in the future, their managers/bosses/etc strongly disagree. Also, be extremely honest for a moment, does the witcher 3 really need a remake? (original game still looks and plays great?) and do you really believe that they will remake Witcher 3 with another engine with another studio doing a lot of the leg work _because they are interested in the engine?_ or do you think maybe all of this is just because they need a lot of money after the CP77 drama???
@Vorexia
@Vorexia 7 ай бұрын
@@suicidalbanananana First off, they aren't remaking Witcher 3. They're remaking the Witcher 1, which has a notoriously awful combat system, low-quality audio, too few NPC models, goofy animations, poor voice acting, and the graphics are charming but potato. Most (if not all) appropriately aged women were also really sexualized in TW1, which was pretty typical for games of that era, but it can be pretty uncomfortable seeing from today's perspective. I enjoyed pretty much all of the above, had a blast with that game and the jankiness cracked me up, but it's not good for a mainstream audience tbh, which is too bad since the actual story is genuinely amazing. It's definitely in need of a remake. Here's a classic video that shows how hilariously janky the Witcher 1 is: kzbin.info/www/bejne/maiwpZ2JqLuriq8 And another even better one, although it's a bit of a spoiler: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aqW6maKlbqZ1ns0 Anyway, I don't know where you're getting all this information from. CDPR has already revealed that they're not only transitioning to UE5, but also collaborating with Epic to make a custom version of UE5 tailored to CDPR's needs. They wouldn't go that far that while simultaneously working on the RED Engine. It would be extremely expensive and labour-intensive to do both at once. No engine developer would intentionally help a competing engine developer, but if you're leaving your own engine behind in favour of another engine, and you still have expertise, it is a no-brainer to help your engine dev optimize their engine for YOUR needs. It's simple mutualism. CP77 has been a pretty nice success for CDPR, financially speaking. It launched poorly, but through years of bug fixing, it's managed to retain an active community. Phantom Liberty and CP 2.0 overall is just a resounding success for CDPR, and you have over 100k people playing the game right now. With the awful launch that Starfield has been, you have people going back to Cyberpunk and appreciating the lack of loading screens, the well-animated characters, etc. That game is aging like fine wine. If CDPR needed a quick buck, they could just make another two DLCs for Cyberpunk, because it's obvious by now that people are ready to buy 'em.
@valmirius
@valmirius 7 ай бұрын
@@Vorexia you had a point about the jankiness, but I'm pretty sure mainstream audiences (the ones that actually play games rather than just talk about them) don't really give really give a fuck about sexualising women given how well Baldur's Gate 3 sold
@Vorexia
@Vorexia 7 ай бұрын
@@valmirius That sexualization goes to a very different extent. In BG3, you have romanceable companions (both sexes) and the rare hot milf who shows off her cleavage. In TW1, iirc every single woman who gives you a quest is very eager to have sex with you once you've helped them out. Women not clad in revealing outfits are very rare. Then you have the collectible romance cards, which kind of explains itself. I assure you that a lot of mainstream gamers today would find all of that distracting and cringy, it's very above and beyond what we normally see in games.

Epic Games' current revenue is not publicly disclosed, but it is estimated to be around $6.27 billion USD in 2022. Wooah...... Some analysts predict that Epic Games' revenue could reach $7 billion USD in 2023. This would represent a growth of over 10% from 2022. However, it is important to note that the gaming industry is volatile and there is no guarantee that Epic Games will meet or exceed these expectations. The valuation for Unreal Engine is difficult to estimate, as it is not publicly traded. However, some analysts estimate that Unreal Engine could be worth anywhere from $10 billion to $20 billion USD. Wow. UE is crazy and insane...

This is what I used to think - so Epic Games has been fortunate to be making that much money mostly from Fortnite and giving away UE for free all these years. BUT from the recent layoffs and Tim's posts and opening talk at Unreal Fest, sounds like Fortnite isn't doing as well as before, which is why they are talking about changing the licensing for Unreal Engine. Hopefully it remains free for indie artists and small studios.

@@williamlacrosse9389 Spoken like somebody who has no experience using it for extended period of time/releasing something with it, there is a reason why more and more people are moving AWAY from Unreal Engine even tho they keep implementing _even more_ fancy graphics stuffs, its somewhat hard to articulate the exact issues but it pretty much boils down to "absolutely amazing at doing really cool bespoke demo's and small scenes, but not good at combining demo's into some actual game that still performs well" @WiseThoughts3 Its not going anywhere any time soon, that much is clear, but pay attention to what they themselves are focussing on, did you notice yet that they are pushing more and more to become a tool in filming instead of its earlier goals? And did you notice the many many blog posts from game developers having tried UE5 and then deciding not to use it? I don't actually mean to be rude so please don't take my word for it and feel free to just go ahead and try make the projects you envision, but consider this a fair warning, you will likely hit a point somewhere halfway into development where you conclude that the engine you poured so much time into is not fit for your project, target hardware, etc. Graphics should never be the deciding factor for a game engine. But now we're actually getting there and that's super exciting! Hopefully by then we can also get rid of some legacy crap that has accumulated. I can't wait to stop having to deal with slow HDDs and hardware limitations like DX12.1 not being supported. I also hope that Vulkan gets some love so we can get closer to feature parity with DX12 on steam deck and other handhelds.

Good stuff about AI and a lot of things. Great summary. One big thing that apparently is really hard to do in unreal engine (or a pain in the butt) is making quests. Like if you were trying to make something like skyrim in unreal engine, making quests is really hard and complicated. I've heard this, I dont know if its true but if it is, seems to me Epic should do something to make it much easier. Also modding tools for Unreal Engine games should be something thats integrated so any UE5 game would have the same modding tools... that would be HUGE for modding... and make tools for modding easy. The best engine for doing quests and modding is Bethesda engine... maybe Epic should look at how they do it... and copy it/improve it....

Its such a shame that NaturalMotion stopped the distribution of Morpheme/Endorphine/Euphoria for the Unreal Engine. Even back in 2009 it was possible to create 100% physics based and 100% synthesized on-the-fly animations with it. It contains a ton of behaviours which can be blended dynamicly to a RIG. From a self balancing RIG (with or without cheatforce support) to environmental reactions with a whide range of configurable parameters. All that potential is unused for about 10 years now. With that stuff available on the UE marked or directly implemented to the unreal engine itself, nearly everything would be solved when it comes to (physicsbased)animations/ragdolls.

Just focus on learning the new things coming out and practice while waiting, cause all of this is so much better than what we had to do even a couple years ago It’s overwhelming but knowing that all of these updates are eliminating massive workflows saves years off your life. I.e You can now just drag and drop lumen and focus on learning lumen instead of having to learn everything about lighting in 3d applications just to apply it in engine. Lumen alone is offloading an entire departments worth of education and work, so it’s def worth the trade off (Previously lighting was a nightmare amount of work, and even then it was still optimized and much better than the tools offered years before with dynamic lighting)

PS3 & UE3 -> 2006 PS4 Q4 2013, UE4 Q1 2014 PS5 Q4 2020, UE5 announced Q2 2020 (with a PS5 demo), launched in early access Q2 2021 we'll have to see how the major players handle the next launches. some rumors say that sony will skip the pro version and get an early next generation as early as 2026 or 2027, microsoft is planning more towards 2028 which sounds like a decent timeline for a new UE release, though it's tough to imagine they will get another massive jump like nanite and lumen, it'll probably be a smaller change with lots of great incremental increases in the meantime. maybe a refactor to cut out some legacy stuff, maybe a stronger focus on their new programming language Verse (should that take off) UE also has slowed down their release cycles a little. It used to be 3-4 releases every year with UE4 now its about 2.

They don't care as long as it kinda works, UE is for cool demo's, massive game studios, or film. Even tho it they sure advertise it as such it's not really fit for indie projects with just a single or a few devs.

source builds are really not that hard once you know the C++ basics (which you want to have if you're developing games that need a dedicated server) you usually want to have a source build on larger projects anyway since they're easier to maintain in the long run.
@TrojanLube69
@TrojanLube69 7 ай бұрын
@@maxmustsleep if you want to upgrade engine versions is much easier on a built engine than source if you haven’t messed with modifying the engine. Even on small projects it takes longer. Is not about knowing c++ or not. I’ve in software development - coding for over 17 years. Yes, C++ is way easier to maintain due to the organization as long as you follow the coding standards . The point is not using c++ or blueprints. The point is having to build engine from source. This is “one” of many reasons many big project multiplayer titles never upgrade after starting to build a game. If they do it, it would eat development cost of over 8-14 months depending on how complex they have modified the engine or just used engine code only. Also, another reason why big companies prefer starting a new sequel from scratch rather than upgrading and re-using code. At this point I am considering investing a year or so creating a production ready plugging for developing and updating dedicated servers without any need to build from source and maintaining server builds. Even a plugin like this would require some work when upgrading engine versions to take advantage of new features or even longer if a core dependency/class is modified on the engine to work with a new feature.

@@edenassos Woah! straight to hostility and assumptions? ease up partner, I’m not your enemy! If you want to know more about shader stutter and it’s current solution watch Digital Foundry’s review of UE5, they will explain far better than I can, as you are right, I’m not a professional game dev (although I have dabbled a bit on my own) I do not have a 4090, I have a 3080ti, and have been watching videos of people benchmark the 4090 since it released over a year ago, paying particular attention to UE5 demos and now with the first games from that engine, my conclusion is that UE5 is still in a poor state to ship well optimised games which is concerning. I hope with that information I can ease your frustration with my comment, cheers.
