I truly, truly get your point. But I honestly would hate it if a privileged white woman like Taylor spoke up about OUR plights. I like that she stays in her lane. I have no doubt that she personally and in her own time supports POC and trans women, but does she really have the right to publicly be a champion for OUR rights? No, I don’t think so. That said, I also don’t want to speak for you. I understand that your needs as an Asian American is different from mine. I’ve met people who agree with me that privileged white people should sit the hell down, but I’ve also encountered people of color who want white people to speak out. We all respond to these things differently. Maybe Taylor even has people in her life who tell her that they’re more comfortable if she sits this one out, and she’s just being respectful of that.

While Sadie and Dylan’s age gap is uncomfortable I think Taylor’s casting choice was needed to legitimately showcase how problematic this relationship was. We have to remember that both actors are just that, *actors*, and this isn’t a short film condoning or glorifying large age gap relationships. I think Sadie and Dylan did a great job in these roles, you could feel their difference in age and maturity immediately.

Specially because back in the day lot didn't see Taylor's relationship as what it was (a really young girl and old man, and the power dinamic). Instead I saw a lot of people actually talking about their relationship as "dreamy" without realizing how wrong it was just because she didn't look that young (even though she was). This "uncomfortable" feeling was what we didn't felt back in 2009 but didn't, showing how we failed her. Why we feel uncomfortable with Sadie but didn't feel that way with Tay? a thing about the angles: this is a slight low angle and it's commonly used in scenes involving power dynamics or where one character has an advantage over another. i think it's a subtle way of visually showing how Taylor put him on a metaphorical pedestal, not to mention that he's taller and older than her so she's always looking up at him in some way. sincerely, a film student/nerd.

Personally, I think the extra minute of her echoing "i was there, i was there, you remember it all too well" while recalling a few details of some memories like, "wind in my hair, down the stairs, sacred prayer" was necessary, all because I think even before Red (Taylor's Version) was ever gonna become a thing, a lot of Taylor's fans were still talking shit about Jake and talking about the scarf and how he didn't show up for her 21st birthday party, whatnot. So, the 1 minute echo was like this ever-haunting memory of that 3-month relationship for him. Of her being like, "i was there, and you *do* remember it all too well." It's as though everywhere he goes, there's always that reminder of that infamous time with her. That's just my interpretation of it though.

She explains this in Miss Americana (the documentary) but as a country artist (when she was starting out), she was taught to not speak out on her politics and to just stick to music. Now that she's older, more established, and more mature, she's confident in speaking out about issues such as racism, misogyny, homophobia, etc. The problem is that when she speaks out, no one pays as much attention to her because she stayed quiet for so long. But she's a huuuuge advocate for the LGBTQ+ community and women in general. I will say tho, obviously I'm not her so idk if it's true or not, but maybe she doesn't speak out on behalf of WOC and Trans women because she feels it's not her place? Like in "You need to calm down" she got a lot of backlash for being a poser even though she's always been LGBTQ+ friendly and has given to charities for years. I think she's just sticking in her lane while being vocal enough for people to know that she supports what she supports. If she wrote a song about something she can't personally relate to it can come across fake and misinformed which would do more harm than good. So I think she's doing alright. The activism thing. Tbh, as much as I love Taylor Swift, I wouldn't want her to write songs about the LGBTQIA+ or about POCs because she had no idea what we been through. And instead of actually fighting for our rights, the media will put it out as Taylor, a famous white singer, is speaking up for these people. Which definitely plays into white heroism. I would like it better if she supports them and give them the platform instead of being the representative of fighting for our rights. I don't if you understand what I mean 😅. Another thing, what do you mean she does not speak of it now, did you even hear her song, The Man? Also, just because you are not speaking up for it in the past, does not mean you don't support it. I hate that mindset. Its like you are asking for people to never change their beliefs and the things they support in. Does that mean that when my parents don't like gays before but now they accept it because they had been educated, you will not believe them?? Even if they actually change and fully support it now? There are things you regret supporting before, you change so why can't other people change too? Wow. I suggest that Trin should watch Miss Americana to further understand Taylor Swift. Another thing, I find it weird that everyone is so disgusted by the casting when it is the point of the film. Also, don't be a hypocrite, there are so many series and movies that have a huge age gap that nobody criticize. What the heck is with that???? Double standards? Just because Taylor is highlighting how disgusting it is then it's not alright to do the casting, but if it's used in other films it's cute and quirky? Wow. Just wow. Is portraying the age gap wrong or are you just uncomfortable ? Edit: I think this comes down to a misunderstanding of why Age gaps are problematic in the first place… She said it herself, shes capable of wanting to kiss Dylan. Doesn’t mean they want to be in a relationship that would have problematic power dynamics due to different phases in life. I don’t know how Sadie is being treated like a child when she’s incredibly intelligent, professional, and most importantly of age. It’s not even like she’s freshly 18 and they’re finally getting the “ok”. They’re both actors doing their job while maintaining boundaries, they’re capable of making those decisions for themselves. The importance is whether or not Sadie or Dylan were given the SPACE and RESPECT to address those boundaries. I don’t want to say it’s infantilization but I don’t know another word for it. If we can’t even portray age gaps in media when 2 huge actors are given the room to collaborate with another artist (largely on their own in terms of what was portrayed) what the hell is that precedent for everything else…?

I think young Taylor was referring to herself when she said that, but now, old Taylor looks back at it and knows it wasn't her, so maybe it could be a nod to that, or maybe I'm just overthinking it. But also, in the spiderman movies, Mary Jane is the one who initiates the kiss with first Peter, and then another love interest as if trying to have the same magic, the same spark but after it happens, she realizes it's not the same."

(Then we would have another Brie Larson on our hands and no one wants that, lol.) I'm glad Taylor shares her own experiences with the patriarchy with great art like this, because it could help some women feel seen and understood. Not all women, but some. I just think her personal pain when it comes to the patriarchy should be seen as just as valid as the experiences of women of color and trans women and queer women, and I really don't understand the mentality of needing to validate everyone's experiences in your art. Your art should be personal. It should reflect your own life and what you personally feel strongly about. If Taylor feels strongly about fucking the patriarchy because of her own personal experiences as a white straight cis woman who dated a man 10 years older than her, why she should then have to stand up for all women. those women can stand up for themselves. But that's just my opinion.

Never understood the need for celebrities to address social issues in America. They’re so far removed from any of our realities that speaking on it on our behalf or calling it out without a strong, nuanced understanding of a lived experience doesn’t really make sense to me. In no way does it encapsulate the magnitude of any of the issues they’re ~forced to address nor can it affect the change they want to on a federal level. It’s good to be educated, to think of others, to recognize and learn from other people’s truths etc., but some just seem awful quick to jump down their throat for the slightest misstep; and at the same time, so unwilling to do anything but be hostile towards them even if they’re genuinely trying to do better. Life exists outside social media, but people here seem to think that their silence on specific issues is a reflection of who they are and what they do when it’s not. The way I see it, they’re expected to speak up on ALL the issues that come through the internet and deal with the accusatory culture that comes with refusing to do just that.
@ryndesu82992 жыл бұрын
I agree that not every celebrity has to speak about social issues, but if you call yourself a feminist like taylor does, then yes, you’re expected to be an intersectional feminist and be an activist for marginalized groups as well. Just strange to see people in social media perceive themselves as moral arbiters of the universe.

She's spoken out, fought, and tried everything in her power to make a difference. You just don't hear about it because it's clouded by others saying she's "attention-seeking" or "doing it for her own benefit." But who's to say she also doesn't speak on POC issues because she's not a POC. She's brought these issues to light on her Twitter, but she doesn't talk about it much because she has no place or right to talk about topics she's never faced. So imagine how excited and special that made Taylor felt. She also invited his friend, and they came. They asked her why she was upset. Like come on. His friends who’re older than her, who she probably invited out of respect for Jake came to some girl 21st birthday party. And he was the one who ditched. He didn’t have the decency to tell her before or during the party. He let her wait by the door and apologized after. If Jake really needed to promote his movie he probably already know the schedule months or at least weeks ahead. But he still promised and bailed. There we pictures of her after the party or during this time period. And you can tell she’s been crying, her eyes were all puffy. There’s also pictures of her wearing the scarf before she went to Maggie’s house for thanksgiving or something and Jake wearing the scarf later on. So basically, yes we don’t know everything and we only know her side of the story but at least a lot of the details of their relationship are indeed true & were documented by the paparazzi..
