I actually think there's a really good message to be found in this bit. You should not claim that these issues don't matter, BUT you should not get worked up about it if you are not in a position to meaningfully change the issue. I am a normal dude who just spends most of his time either on the PC, in the gym or visiting my sister and niece. I live paycheck to paycheck with very little money saved up right now and I really can't change the stuff going on in Ukraine. So it is 100% pointless to get myself worried and more gloomy about this stuff, people like that are ruining their own life for things that they can't change. No you do NOT have to live while being constantly aware of the wrongs in the world. I am educated about them but I can control my mind and emotions, so I can purposefully not think about these issues, because me thinking about them CHANGES NOTHING ABOUT THE ISSUES! So yeah, stoicism all the way. Worrying but not actually doing anything is actually worse for the world than just nor caring about these issues. Because in both cases, you are not helping with the issue, but the people that worry too much also worsen their own life, mood, productivity, everything really. Control your emotions, don't block them, don't become dull to feelings. But don't ever let your emotions and thoughts overhwelm and control you. YOU are the one in control, it just takes some practice. I am far from perfect at it as well.
@Avv4U Жыл бұрын
I kinda disagree, even if we can't directly do something about it just talking about it with other people, giving your opinion will put a certain idea in the mainstream of a people. So if your form of democracy works relatively well this will make the political body do certain things. Let's say the mainstream is to help Ukraine with the war efforts, a political parties who opposes this will get less votes, less seats in parlimant and overall less money. The point of view of a party will change in accordance with the overall ideas of the people. I'm European by the way and I know that in America this doesn't work quite as well because of how the democracy is set up, but still it will have some effect. Stoicism is always goated and thank god to america for helping in the war effort.
@ardynizunia9709 Жыл бұрын
@@Avv4U Having an opinion and sharing is is different from worrying and virtue signaling. For example, I would prefer stuff in Ukraine to be more peaceful for those poor people, but I won't go on tirades online about this stuff, going crazy and depressed over the issue when I'm not about to change it anyways. I can share my general opinion on it, but if I am not working in anything related to the issue at all or I'm not a journalist or anything like that, there really is no point in me investing any more time than that. I will only make myself miserable. Seriously, people who worry a lot about things they cannot control all end up miserable and depressed. Yes, people taking about something can put more attention towards it and cause a change, agreed. That's why I would sign a petition or something or maybe donate a bit of money to support an issue. But here's the thing, if I am not willing or able to create a charity, make that petition, start the change myself, then worrying will just make me sad. I never said not to have any opinion about it. I'm just saying not to worry about the things you're not in control over. If you wanna help with those issues, donate some money if you can afford it or make a post online to voice your support if it makes you feel better. But do NOT engage in the discussions in the comments about the topic for example. You won't change anything but your own mood by doing that. So I guess what I'm saying is just, having an opinion on stuff is fine, supporting issues is fine, but as soon as you let yourself get distracted from what you're doing in your own life by those issues you have no control over, you're ruining your own life because you lack control over your emotions. The same goes even for people who DO the charities or directly help with larger issues. Even those people need to learn to only focus on what their organization actually can control and not worry too much about the stuff that is out of their reach. You can't control the world, but you CAN control how you look at it. Hope I got my point across better now.
@Avv4U Жыл бұрын
@@ardynizunia9709You're right. Yapping in the comments section won't really help, but it is fun though. I just think it's important to invest some times in topics and problems, without makimg it your life mission or getting in to deep thet you get depressed. That way you can try to influence your surroundings and that does already more than you think. By surroundings i mean friends and family, and ofcourse not influencing in an annoying way. Just when a conversation comes up always be ready to have a standpoint you believe in. For example many of my friends are not al too invested in such thing and just consume social media, so when they talk to me about it and i hear some sort of propaganda i try to make clear what i more likely happening. Then you leave it at that and go back to your day. I'm just trying to say that the transfer of thoughts and ideas do more than people think. There's a reason why propaganda works.

@@Avv4U talking about it doesn’t do anything, or at least what most young people think talking means: yelling about it to anyone and everyone, making posts online to support xyz, putting a flag on your username, “bringing awareness”. They think that will cause change or change people’s opinions. It doesn’t. Having meaningful *discussions* or *sharing* stories (cuz people like a good story) or *showing* instead of telling what is happening and more can help change people’s hearts to want something to be done. On the politicians end, they don’t care how the people feel, they want votes. But telling people don’t vote for this person or that person doesn’t do anything. Name calling neither. *Show* what they are supporting like, “do you want to vote for someone who supports this?”, *criticize* them beyond the current issue and be truthful and not embellish, and *ask questions* rather than make demands (cuz that sticks in people’s brains more). And when talking isn’t enough, organize events like walks or *peaceful* protests in a manner that uses a lot of the above tactics: discuss, share, show, criticize, ask questions. A lot of people don’t talk like that that we see on social media or on the news, and that’s why it doesn’t get through to people very well. These are tactics that have worked before to effectively get people to change their minds and even take action and if the news won’t do it, people can on social media or better yet do it in person

@@12DAMDO I don't know, unjust hierarchy is pretty fine. I mean you go along living your life, and a lot of unjust hierarchies aren't affecting you, so that's fine. Then an unjust hierarchy comes along and starts affecting you, or you notice another unjust hierarchy was already affecting you, but it seems to be fine with you and what you are doing, so that is fine. Then suddenly the unjust hierarchy isn't fine with you or what you are doing, so it tries to punish or harm you somehow because it thinks doing that is important for some reason, but it doesn't cause you much suffering, so you just ignore it, which is just fine. Then suddenly it does cause you intense suffering, but meanwhile you're just chillaxing and keeping it real, so that's all fine, and if you get distracted by the suffering you can just develop some masochism and eventually its fun, so that's all good. Then they kill you or you die some other way, but you don't know about that because you're dead, so that's all good as well and basically you're just chillaxing, or just don't exist, or whatever. Even if hell or something like that were real, you've trained yourself in the art of masochism and the art of chillaxing like a boss, so that's also fine and probably the whole process just creates suffering for the demons. Hell might as well be heaven, because it just doesn't matter. Take it easy and keep it schwifty, right? Anyways some forms of torture or sickness might feel about as bad as hell long-term, so its a good analogy. On the other hand that kind of suffering could perhaps be overcome and made not only tolerable but even enjoyable by some meaningful project of artistic creation, struggling against all odds to ecstatically, deliriously and carelessly lay one's blood on a canvas so to speak, carving out a unique, personal and original vision of what could be, and bringing it into the world. This was Nietzsche's recommendation, and he lived his life nearly alone, and in great pain, suffering, nearly entirely bed-ridden illness and near-blindness. This was also the guy who came up with the ideal of embracing amor fati, the joyful and enthusiastic desire for one's own life to reoccur, over and over, infinitely, exactly the way it happened the first time (including all of the suffering and the failures, humiliations and defeats, exactly as they happened the first time, feeling exactly the way they felt the first time since you would have no memory of them ever having happened to you before). That actually seems very chillaxed and masochistic, so I think that might actually be what the whole argument leads towards. I can't think of any other way to make masochism and chillaxin' more enjoyable than Nietzsche's method. Was Nietzsche somehow and paradoxically, the original and total Dude? Huh. That's not where I expected this to go.

I feel like people don't seem to understand that "feeling fine" and a situation "being fine" are two different things. This video made that very clear. If you genuinely convince yourself to feel fine, you can actually endure tougher situations and conditions, regardless on if it solves it or not. Additionally, letting a situation which barely has anything to do with you and that you cannot solve yourself affect you will simply make you feel less fine than if you were to simply put less thought into it. It's really not that complex, you are your own biggest enemy.

One important thing here is that he is asking people, 'Do you have a different opinion than me on this, let me know!' If there was someone out there just being happy and you'd berate them with reasons for being sad that would be a lot different. But that's not the case here. And if you do do something like this accidentally, people are capable. And as long as you try your best not to do this intentionally, It's on them to let you know. 'Hey, I don't fw this conversation right now. Could we please change the topic.' Ultimately people are responsible for their own happiness. B) If there IS something you can do, flooding yourself with the shrill, panicky, neurotic negative emotion of an activist will almost certainly give you the worst possible chance at survival. The girl is right. Being able to not think about things and be fine is privileged. Being privileged is - of course - offensive. Therefore, we who are fine should inform ourselves about everyone who is not, until we’re not. When after this, someone asks us how we are doing we can answer with pride: “Don’t ask about me. Ask about the people in [insert country], who suffer [insert injustice] and be stressed out with me.”

@followingtheroe19522 жыл бұрын
I dont simp for stoicism but that whole school of thought is really just a tool in a toolbelt. Stoicism would be breaking the arm of the guy poking you with a blank expression, because you put all of your energy out of emotion and into action. The idea is that emotions are tied to phenomenology, multiplicity and illusion. And action is tied to purpose, fate and telos. So the more you act, the more in contact with reality you are. And the more you feel, the more in fake reality you live. It would be impossible to ignore being poked if you were emotionally unclouded and living in the present. You have to be preoccupied to put up with bullshit

When they ask "don't you feel the need to protect your loved ones" you can follow up by saying that it's a hopeless pursuit, you can't protect people against a drunk driver or deseases or any accident so your impulse of protection is an illusion, ultimately meaningless and will be let down so you choose not to care. That should strip the last bit of hope from their soul.

Or instead to find a bit of optimism/not succumb to pessimism in a bad situation
@pleaseenteranamelol7112 жыл бұрын
Everybody focuses on the bad parts of everything. That guy talking about the holocaust for example. He says it was not fine, (fair enough) but jreg says things ended up being okay after so its fine. I personally think the world ended up okay as well, after all, we dont know what wouldve happened if the holocaust DIDNT happen, and thinking about alternative history is just silly because things SIMPLY DID NOT HAPPEN THAT WAY. We literally live in the best time in human history.
@weirdlypicturedbeing21222 жыл бұрын
@@pleaseenteranamelol711 That might kinda fall into "The ends don't justify the means" though the ends of the holocaust were certainly never meant to be this current world. Thinking about a broad alternative reality is not completely silly, as long as you don't get too into it and as long as you use that for the present to determine if something is fine or not. Maybe? Then we get to the point where something not-fine is going on rn in any form, but there's no "after" to think about there. So when jreg says it's fine cuz he's not affected, it can urge the person that feels/knows things are not fine to look for ways to make it fine. Tho I'm slightly grasping at straws there.

This is actually great. Doing it this way. You can hear what they truly do believe is the thing we should be worried about right now. Rather than discussing specifically about certain events. It allows it to be very broad. And when worded that way. It strikes to what people care about. As much as I could see you joking around(honestly only half joking lol)in this. This was actually quite a powerful conversation, it’s less about explaining what’s fine. And more about hearing what they think is bad from their differing perspectives.

@ppleberrynd2 ай бұрын
Organize. Be an activist. The system is broken, sure. So, find how to fix it. If nobody knows the answers, then find the answers yourself. Once you know the solution, then you must begin to bring the solution into realization, all while considering the very real possibility that you might be wrong, either completely or partially. You could join an organization, or if there isn't one that suits your views, organize one yourself. You could make propaganda -- and propaganda isn't a necessarily bad thing. Propaganda is just meant to change people's mind. Moving people towards your views, presuming that your views are not harmful or detrimental, is not a bad thing.
