Two of these issues in particular may appear to be self-inflicted, but consider the following: 1. A huge percentage of 6.4 owners who delete their DPFs never do an EGR delete, leaving the coolers in place as I had initially done. The rupturing of the horizontal cooler that I experienced was a result of the delete, however it is a legitimate issue that many owners have/will experience with the truck configured that way without the EGR deleted. As most people who are even slightly familiar with these trucks know, doing these deletes are IMPERATIVE to obtain any length of life out of these trucks. 2. The broken pin in the clutch fan harness which had affected the A/C system is just a pain to deal with in general. The connector is extremely difficult to disconnect as the metal prongs become virtually welded together over the years. Anybody that has done a serpentine belt change on one of these trucks knows exactly what I am talking about. I am certainly not the first, and definitely not the last person to separate a pin from this harness by accident. Yes, this was a mistake, but who knows if I could have ever gotten it apart without that pin slipping loose. This is a tough little problem to find and I wanted to include it in this video as it is a simple problem that will be overlooked 9/10 times. This video was intended to be an honest and detailed account of my ownership thus far. Nothing more and nothing less. If this truck gives me bigger troubles down the road, they will be documented here on the channel. I have nothing negative to report at this time because nothing from the laundry list of issues that these trucks can experience have actually happened to me personally. Everyone has a 6.4 horror story. I'll wait to tell mine until it actually happens to me. We will see how long this truck lives for! Thank you for watching.

Taylor, thanks for the video... really great and informative. I have an 08 F350 with the 6.4L, have not yet done the DPF, but will be doing it soon. I too planned to leave the EGR in place until it became an issue. My question is, how many miles did you go before it went on you, and what was the mileage when it did? Thanks.

Taylor Smith, I also have a 6.4 but my biggest problem is that mine ran away after a turbo failure but I still have and is currently rebuilding it, luckily the engine is still in good shape and it is also completely stock with about 233,000 miles but now I’m getting it all deleted. I have been working on it for the past 6 months and just finally got it to start but only for about 15 seconds then it just shuts off and goes in to a crank no start and there a no codes popping up so I’m assuming it might be a fuel system issue

@dillonlawrence93914 жыл бұрын
@@tjlift22 I havent had it very long, it was one of my best friends trucks so I've been around it for years. The motor blew up on him because of the emission controls so he rebuilt the whole thing and deleted it with aftermarket parts. I did have the capped egr pipe blow out so I deleted the whole pipe. Last weekend i had the transfer case blow up on me due to the front drive shaft going out. If you lose power, it's most likely one of the up pipes for the turbos. If you feel the truck start vibrating when your driving pull over immediately and unbolt your front drive shaft, I made the mistake of letting it go and now the trucks down until I can dish out 1500 on a new transfer case. I love the truck and it's worth every problem I've had though.

I have the same tuck mentioned in this video. Over 250K. BONE STOCK! I pull big horse trailers and very big Teton Homes 5th wheel with it. The truck has amazing power. I still own a N/A 6.9 that I bought in high school, a N/A 7.3 and a Powerstroke 7.3 as well. I've owned two 6.0's. One of those went bang at 37,000 miles. The other one had just over 200 trouble free when I sold it. The 6.4 has had a few problems. Mostly cooling system related and not major. I personally think you can avoid most problems with these trucks by using them as they were designed. In other words, keep them warm/hot. These are not designed to be grocery-go-getters or commute cars. They are designed to haul. You can let an old 6.9 or 7.3 idle with the a/c on for a week and not hurt it. You idle any modern diesel for more than a few minutes and you'll have problems. Those twin turbo chargers provide an excellent balance of power at the low end and high end. Is it possible that the motor will become a boat anchor somewhere down the road? Sure. But my truck has been paid off for a long time and I use it for what it's designed to be used for. I suspect it will give me another 100K to 150K before I think about a rebuild.

I didn’t do as much research it as I should of on the 6.4 before I bought. but after hearing some horror stories after I bought it, I was happy to find your post. I think I got lucky, the truck had 109,000 miles on it, the previous owner took great care of it inside and out. After watching your videos I ordered the replacement exhaust and the EGR delete kit plus the minimax tuner. Looking forward to seeing the oil stay clean for longer then 100 miles after I change it. Thanks again please keep posting!

Great video bro! Stay strong 6.4! I also installed a coolant filter kit. I had read somewhere that our radiator also has some cast aluminum parts that breakdown some allowing the contaminates to flow through 🤷♂️. I believed it and installed a filter to help that out. Another collant problem I had was the driver side main line from the block only has 1 oring inside each end. Mine began to leak pretty bad over the course of a couple weeks. Luckily Motorcraft redesigned this line to have 2 orings on each end. So after a nice shower of coolant that has been replaced and never been an issue since! 126000 miles and still going strong!

Very nice looking truck. Love the dully in the 6.4 best My brother has two 6.4 trucks they work great after deleting as long as they were not washed out already when they were deleted. The problem with the dpf on them was the exhaust stroke being used to fuel the dpf witch washes the oil off the cylinder walls causing them to wear fast then lose compression. But the gm lmm engine had the same problem. Then some make it a long time with he dpf still on if they run nice and clean and if they are run dirty they are likely to blow up sooner.

I have the H&S mini max and 99% of the time set it on "no power" and when towing I set it on "mild" as to not overload/hurt the trany/turbo due to the fact the original factory components were not designed for the added HP and torque. Make sure you are clearing the water separator (located on the driver side frame, about halfway down the truck, looks like a black box with a little tube coming out of it.) Draining this of water until you see only diesel fuel coming through. Forgetting to do this can cause water to get into the engine, and thats just a bad time for anyone.

When tuning with the Mini Maxx after a full delete on a 6.4L, make sure you DO NOT choose the “easy” tune as it will try to cycle the EGR valve and you will still get the wrench symbol trouble code. You need to select either the “mild” or “HD300” tune in order to be trouble code free..

Former fleet truck, chassis cab with 9' Knappheide utility body and 1,300lbs Tommy Gate. Previously used by Thyssen Krupp elevators. Had it delivered to a mechanic to be gone over before putting it back on the road and he was blown away about how good the 6.4L ran. Fully stock except for an aftermarket fuel filter cap. 206k miles. But, now I'll know what to keep an eye on!

I was able to replace that, delete the DPF and EGR and tune it for less than $500. This was all with the cab on, as I have skinny arms and tiny hands, and an excellent sawz-all. It's worth more now than I paid for it, but as long as SWAMBO keeps her travel trailer, I'm keeping Grandpa.

I know it's a bit of an old vid...... But I absolutely love both of my 6.4's. I bought my 2010 white ccsb 9 years ago. I pushed that truck for 3 solid years with all the bolt ons, 30%'s, 59/76's, and some hot mcc tuning on the mini maxx. Stock fuel.(stupid idea) I popped the motor on it myself with pride. She runs good now, lots of blood, sweat, tears and $$$$ later. While the white 6.4 was down I bought a red late 08 build dually. (In my profile pic) it got the same treatment. All the bolt ons, and the 59/76 snails off the white 6.4. But I ran dual k16's and 60's on it right off the bat. Some top end work, and ported rails, plus custom gearhead tunes. But bone Stock bottom end, and stock trans (other than tq converter.) Reached out to about 800whp before I said nope, no more, not pushing it. I run it on mild tuning everywhere, and while towing. I've went 80k miles on this setup (125kish on the truck) and no failures thus far. The trans will be the failure if anything. I'm surprised I haven't killed it yet. Maintenance, maintenance, maintenance!!! I cannot stress this enough! Deletes, maintenance, your tuning, and your right foot will usually determine the fate of your 6.4. Do not throw a 300 horse generic tune on and expect it to hold up to street races every other stoplight. Some do. Most don't. With brand new trucks coming out of the gate with over 500hp and 1000ft pounds of tq, reaching out to 800whp doesn't sound like a big deal. But when I took the dually (which looks stock outside of some wheels/tires) out and sent it down the track running 12.20's with it, it was extremely satisfying. Still dialing in the white one, before touting numbers. Overall, 6.4 life has been great to me. That said, I'm excited to send a truck or two down the rd. And pick up a new 7.3 gasser. Y'all take care 🤘

@itisTaun4 жыл бұрын
@@garysmith5741 so the EGR has to be removed first. When you pull the re-gen system, as soon as you start it, it will throw a code into the computer system. When you turn on your tuner for the first time, it will ask you about both deletes, and will turn off those codes. I took mine into a shop, they did both deletes at the same time, then did a 'tow tune' flash to the on board computer.

I have a 2009 f250 lariat with 180000 miles and the only problem I’ve ever had with it, was the torque convert and the rear seal. At that point I decided to upgrade the tranny since,IT, was in good condition, I went with a billet torque converter and deeper pan. Thru on an add a leaf kit and I love my truck.

Great video. I also have the 2008 6.4 and have had only normal wear and tare issues. Alternators. Radiator. Turbo rebuild. After reading forums and freaking out that I kept blowing coolant out the degas bottle and I have mine tuned I was convinced I blew my head gaskets. The ford dealer told me to keep in mind, you’re reading blown head gaskets from all over the world, guys who tune their rigs and sit in parking lots red lining the RPMS and turbos doing donuts over and over and beating the HELL OUT of their trucks then wondering why it’s blown and blaming the 6.4. He said blown head gaskets on the 6.4 is extremely rare. Turned out that after 260,000 PROBLEM FREE miles my turbo needed rebuilding. The pressure leak is what was causing my coolant to blow through degas bottle. NOT BLOWN HG’s, blocked oil cooler. I’ve pulled over-loaded dump trailers that the combined truck trailer and load was 34,500 no problem. That was one time and didn’t realize it was that heavy till I hit the scales. The ford techs will tell anybody if these rigs are PROPERLY MAINTAINED they are fantastic engines, more power than any regular contractors need. They’re correct. Mine is pushing 300,000 and I bought it with 112,000 a few years ago. Driven every day and worked like crazy. I love my King Ranch and have NO PLANS except when the day comes I will be dropping in a Cummins conversion. Truck still looks brand new, leather is top notch. I can’t say enough about the truck and I still get TONS of compliments and yes the truck is untouchable here in Portland, Or. dodges have tried to take me, they can’t, chevys, I eat them up. I’ve raced maybe 7-8 guys in their dodges and chevys at lights and have smoked them all, with ease.

Could you clarify where the pressure in the cooling system was coming from? I have a 6.4 and experiencing the same thing believing it must be head gaskets. If its from the turbo how is it pressurizing the coolant system? Thanks

Take a chill pill. Unless this truck is a professionally modified race truck your asking for huge time out, and $. I know the temptation is hard to resist. However, the performance and reliability to show up on the job site is the win. Not red light to red light.

I drive a 2010 F 450. 67000 miles. Blew a turbo boost boot is all. Just did the re-gen delete. Last week, changed the thermostats. .. one was sticking closed. Had a small pinhole leak on to- radiator hose. Haven’t checked yet but I’m thinking I’m getting 4-5 mpg better. Was getting about 11 ....up , down and around the hill. Running a 4” pipe off factory muffler.

Just had the oil cooler go out on 2008 F350 4x4. Bought the truck a year ago and it only had 82,000 miles on it. My wife worked at a Ford dealership that I got the truck from and was still able to put a 3 year factory warranty on the truck since the miles were so low. Thankfully the oil cooler was covered. The cab had to be removed to replace it. I'm guessing it would have been a 5 grand repair without it.

I’d love an 08-10 F450 but I can’t work on it myself and I’ve seen way more of these with new engines in Craigslist, autotrader etc than I’ve seen with other engines. But damn they’re nice.

I've had mine since 2015, CC 4x4 SRW etc. So, I bought this to pull my 36' 5th wheel knowing that issues that were bound to crop up and a few have...such as the thermostats w/ temp sensor which shows the temp spiking almost instantly while pulling that 12,500 lb load on a very hot day. My tech scratched his head (and tickled his Snap-On diagnostic tool and made some calls) and we figured it out. The parts were cheap, the labor not so much since its a booger to reach. Now the trans can take some time to engage in drive, so on a hunch (and research and fingers crossed), I replaced the valve body, which encouraged me not to go on hunchs again since it still does the same thing. In researching that issue apparently, these auto transmissions are prone to having a bad ground (good grief) and can actually kill itself because of it. Regardless, now at 207k I still love this truck (had 50k on it when we bought it). Oh and a DPF delete at 100k with just the delete program, no issues w/ that. Just my 2cents.

I bought my 6.4 new in summer of 2007, I have a 2008 F350 SRW 4x4. It’s been great. Only things wrong have been: Twice had to replace radiator due to side tanks leaking because of the frame flexing & twisting from being off road. The exhaust sensor 8C3Z-12B591-E I’ve had to replace 3 times so now I carry a spare cause it throws it into limp mode. Alternator at 100,000 & that’s it. I have 110,000 miles now 14 years later & runs great

Or…. Now hear me out, use that money to build your 6.4 from choate or kdd and skip out on the wimpy 24v
@BigBlockOverland2 жыл бұрын
@@mutanay77 Because I can pull the 5.9 for like 1000$ and have a more reliable platform than even a built 6.4. To make them reliable you have to go billet and you’re talking about $30,000+ in a motor. I can blow up nearly 30 5.9s before I match the total. Plus it’s a f450 so it’s really meant for hauling/towing and Cummins is king for that. I’m not pulling sleds, just some skid steers and excavators and HDPE
@mutanay772 жыл бұрын
@@BigBlockOverland well you’re not wrong on the grand for a 5.9. But I daily a 6.4 for 2 years now and a simple delete and tuning is all I need. And if you want to go built the max is like $15K from choate or kdd. Not 30k
@BigBlockOverland2 жыл бұрын
@@mutanay77 not bad pricing if it’s billet. We have bullet proofed 6.0s and 6.4s in our fleet and they’ve been great and can pull like hell with a conservative tune, but, I’ve seen some swap videos that made me want to do the swap. Especially the ones from Taylor Ray. I just want to engage the challenge to do it to have something different and easy as heck to work on.
