Might add on the 6.9, if you have all good glow plugs run a solid state glow plug controller, have good batteries and a gear reduction starter to spin it at 300 rpm and follow ford recommendation for full throttle to start below 32 degrees which will also advance pump timing they actually start quite well

Good advice!

Better advice: bypass the glow plug controller and route a push button to your dash area. That’ll save you having to replace 8 glow plugs when the controller decides to have a mind of its own.

A very Honest and truthful view of the ford IDI. This is coming from someone who's daily drives a NA 87 T19 4x4. The problem i've noticed from many used IDI trucks is they change hands and maintenance is unknown since the Odometers roll over at every 100k. You don't know if the motor has 100k or 500k. You'd hope there's service records but most don't so you're just replacing stuff left and right. It's always good to write dates on the fuel filters and oil filters and really anything that's serviced as a reference. One thing I will say is I love/hate the ZF5. I'm in a group on FB and literally every other post is someone cracking the case on those transmissions. Whether it's the belhousing area or the rear case by the t-case. Everyone wants big money for a used ZF5 transmission(500-800-1200$). With that being said i'll keep my dime a dozen T19 with 3:54's and 35" tires.

I’ve had good luck with Classic Diesel Designs in Texas as well. Really underrated motor and chassis. Excellent work trucks.

A properly tuned IDI with no air intrusions, a healthy glow plug system, and a healthy starter/battery cables will start in below freezing conditions as reliably as anything else.

I would also like to add Classic Diesel Design out of San Antonio for a IDI source. I drove on a long road trip in a turbo 7.3 NA idi 5mt in a 5.13 geared F-Supoerduty flatbed 2700 RPM highway not terrrible on fuel just loud.

My grandparents bought a 94 f250 4x4 7.3 factory turbo 5 speed brand new. It's been a great truck and has plenty of useable power but one thing I'll give a 5.9 over the 7.3 is even for being mechanically injected simple design the underhood is way less inviting to work on. I know they aren't that bad but the 5.9 is way easier to work on.

I’ll disagree with the idi trucks outrunning a turned up first gen VE truck. My dad had a intercooled 93 5 speed with a turned up pump. It would out-pull everything but a 6.7 Cummins/powerstroke. It made 320/1000 uncorrected in Denver on the stock turbo. He put 200,000 miles on it like that. He used to do 70 mph up Eisenhower and veil pass at 25,000 combined. 3.54’s + 4th gear. A idi is a good truck, but its $15,000 in parts to make one do that. A turned up ve pump is $1500 and a luk heavy duty single disk is $300

1000lbfts on a turned up stock ve pump????
@wadetate6459 Жыл бұрын
@@ColtWR I’m seeing several VE trucks on KZbin making 400+/1300+ on pretty mild VE pumps and something like a he351 or a s362. Your probably looking at significantly more money into a transmission at that point.

I have a 86 for F250 6.9 that’s been sitting for about 2 years, and I was wondering is there anything I should be concerned about after sitting this long? I already drained the old fuel and put new in before starting it. Thanks

Thinking about buying a 1994 School bus. How can I tell if IDI or PowerStroke?
@ColtWR10 ай бұрын
The easiest and quickest is the oil fill. If it is up front and center it is an idi, the powerstroke is on the passenger valve cover

@ColtWR4 ай бұрын
I believe so yes
@ufftackthegamer15 күн бұрын
Little late on this but yes you can. If you are swapping it into an auto truck you’ll need a pedal assembly, clutch master, and most likely need to drill a couple of holes in the frame for the trans crossmember
