The whole situation is just kind of sad. Sad for fans who want a conclusion to the story. Sad for Pat who feels like he has let fans down. Sad that there is animosity between the fans and author. While I'd love to get Book 3 this year, it doesn't seem likely. And we may not get it for many years to come. It's possible the only version that we ever get will be published posthumously. Even then it wouldn't be the version Pat wants to get in the hands of his fans. So all we can do is wait patiently and hope that Pat comes through, is able to overcome his struggles, and can finish the book and be proud of it. Otherwise we already have two fantastic books we love and can continue to enjoy.

Hi from 2024, no book 3 still...I am a type of person Pat want us to be... but it is not my fault that I love more and more the way he thinks and write while I get older. It is not a crude entitlement or a request... it is a longing for a friend... I only hope he will manage to write it the way he wants. I can only imagine how hard those words come through the meat on paper... p.s. Adrian Tchaikovsky and Sanderson are like the part of the trinity that PKD was talking about describing Stanisław Lem ( cheers from Poland :) ) It is unreal how much they produce. I have not read any of them yet...and I am waiting for a book that Pat is writing for the last 15 years. That is telling something about his writing.

How do they not owe us anything???? I hate when people say that parroting Neil Gaiman. They do owe us what we paid for, a full story. If an author is writing a book with a beginning and an end then I agree. But, when a writer writes a multi-book story there is an agreement that I will pay for an unfinished story with the understanding that the author will finish the damn story at a reasonable pace. Patrick has broken the trust of his readers and will never be what he could have been. The tv show was already canceled because he can't finish 1 book in 10 years.

I'm kind of half and half on the question of "does an author owe you a book?" If I've bought a book about, say, Knight Ancelyn and his noble quest then while the author may have left a sequel hook or two, and may choose to write something about Ancelyn's next quest, they don't in any sense owe it to me to do so - the story is told, it's up to them as to whether they want to tell me another. But if I've bought book 1 of "The Tale of the Runefork" then I have in part invested in the series as a whole, because the story I have isn't anywhere near complete. I'm not angry with Pat, I would never look to give him grief, but I do feel that I've learned a lesson and that lesson has been, given the age I am now, not to invest in authors at the start of a series unless I'm pretty darn sure that they'll get to the end of it before I get to the end of me. That's unfortunate for new guys, but it is what it is.

Princess Ariel is probably the one he rescues from the barrow kings. Also, whichever king he killed, it happened in front of the Eolian, near a fountain. I think it was the prentice’s boy that said that the tiles were cracked and could never be fixed. Also, the prentice’s boy called Kvothe’s sword “the poet killer”. Now remember back to when Kvothe first meets Ambrose in the Archives. He was at the desk trying to woo Fela by how? Writing a poem...
@fuzzyhughes36223 жыл бұрын
It is mentioned that Ambrose is part of the royal line but distant and I remember him moving further up that line (probably through his machinations and the help of other nobles) and since Ambrose absolutely despises Kvothe, If he became next in line to the throne or a similar position, he would not hesitate to abuse his position to hurt Kvothe, and he always finds strength to retaliate when at his lowest and most desperate. And since it's mentioned he had a ring of fire (rings are made using the names you prove you have mastered) I'm pretty sure his retaliation will be... explosive.
@bryanfoster3623 жыл бұрын
I had another thought. When Kvothe was telling Chronicler about rescuing Krin and Ellie, he said the story changed with each telling, and that in one retelling, it was ogres he rescued them from, so these could be the “princesses” he stole back. Just an idea...

This is going to be a long one, but it has some of my own theories. If someone wants to credit me and copy and paste this or at least the thing on some site with other theories for people to debate please do. I believe the sword is the one he gets, from his travels over the storm wall. He actually bound it to the thrice locked chest, we hear that when he broke a sword it sounded like a bell, and then when he hits the chest, it says it makes a sound like a padded bell in a distant room. He goes to the fair realm again but this time time jumps in the opposite direction, maybe a good 30 or so years for only being there a short time. Cinder took the box from the Cathay wood, and he is not denna's patron. He just thinks he is like he always does with everything and jumps to a conclusion that is not right which gets him into trouble because he kills Braiden thinking that he was Cinder

From what I can theorize, Kvothe will only have a couple of chapters, maybe ten at most at the college. He is nearing the age most get accepted and he is kicked out before then. Auri is powerful but it seems her abilities fluctuate, it's not something she can just do and I feel she will end up being far more important to Kvothe than Diane in the end as that relationship almost feels like it ended on a horrible sad note, hints of betrayal and sadness. I dont believe he kills Cinder, I believe he has some reason to go against the other force (order) due to that one comment that he "Looks like a man who killed an angel and it changed him" (something along those lines). Kvothe is waiting for his death and no longer feels like the same person. Either he is waiting for a group to come for him or something happened that is so horrible that he no longer has the spark of life he used to have, a spark that was ignited far too much by a desire for vengeance as he has dropped everything several times for even a HINT of Cinder

It'll be there in 3 years." Obviously you'd be mad. "But Cosmo, you paid for the pizzas, you haven't paid for the third book." Yes and no. I would not have bought the first 2 books if I thought the last one would take over 10 years. And I wager that at least half of KKC readers also would rather have waited until all 3 were out. "He can't control his depression and other events happening in his life." This is very true. But there are several options in this scenario that you, as a writer, can take. You can sign the trilogy off to another writer. Or you can hire a ghost writer. These sound blasphemous, but these are both extremely common and very legitimate options that many authors do take if they have a series they can't finish or have an idea for a series they either can't write or don't have the time to write. If i remember correctly, Sanderson took over the WoT series when the original author passed. It's more common than you think, you just don't hear about it because there are always confidentiality clauses and secrecy clauses attached to the contracts. With all that being said, I'm glad Rothfuss is feeling well enough to write again 😊

@punk3033 жыл бұрын
@@anthonyprevost3968 I also think that Auri is the daughter of Fleurian and Elodin.... Which would explain why he is cracked, and didn't discount Kvothe when he said he met her.
@anthonyprevost39683 жыл бұрын
@@punk303 hmm I actually haven’t pondered that one before.. it kind of makes sense story wise, especially as to why elodin makes a constant attempt at meeting her but the problem I have with that theory is that elodin is only like 29 while auri is at the very least 16-18 which would’ve put elodin at the age of 11-12 when he met up with her. I was confused as all hell when I first found out how young he was. In my minds eye I always picture him with more as more of an older/seasoned type of person. Part of that is probably due to him being a namer himself so it lends his his aura of wisdom. One of the theories I’ve been nursing is that Kvothe is as much of a shaper as he is a namer. My theory on how shapers work is instead of learning the hidden name of things around them they instead learn their own hidden name. We as humans only have control over that which is within rather than that which is without so for people to be able to shape the world with sympathy or to outright name something into submission must mean that the external world is nothing but a manifestation of the subconcious so by learning ones own true name they can shape the world by in turn shaping themselves

@@punk303 oh also another theory is that the doors of stone is the moon. I distinctly remember auri giving kvothe a key to the moon for and I quote “should there be a door on the moon that needs opening.” It’s been a couple years since I read the books but I remember coming up with allot of theories that I have since forgotten unfortunately but I’m sure they would come flooding back to me should I reread the books again

Kvothe also needs to leave the four corners. It's mentioned a few times that he's been beyond the Stormwhal, and that he's seen the Scrael there. The Ctheah mentions it too. He also suggested that he'll see Abenthy again before the present day.

The author doesn't "Owe us anything" isn't entirely true. Publishing is still a business and writing is still a job. What other job can one just take a few years off with no progress and expect others to be happy? It's important to get the story right but that also means the writer should at least put in some effort. Still, I wish Rothfuss the best.

Is he currently being paid by his readers for his time writing book 3? Or will he get paid for book 3 when he publishes it?

Reading here, there's a lot of mention about Kvothe needing to meet Ben again un Book 3 because of what was said in Book 1. I don't think he did see Ben again. He was talking about his family promising to pass through to see Ben again soon, but Kvothe says he knew it would really be years before they passed that way again. Not that he saw him again years later. Just my take.

Haven't seen this theory before - I'm on the fourth re-read (10th anniversary edition). I'll tell you one thing I know for sure. 'Folly' - the sword that Kote hangs in the Waystone Inn - is actually Cinder's sword. Meaning that Kvothe has killed Cinder - and the name 'Folly' suggests this was a grave mistake. Meaning the Chandian/Cinder are not as 'evil' as they may seem.

Do we know whether Patrick Rothfuss is/has drafted sequel stories to the Kingkiller trilogy? The doors of stone doesn't seem like it will sum up the major conflicts in the world, but is instead the ignition point of a larger conflagration.

I'm a big fan of Pat's writing, he's one of my favorite authors of all time actually. He comes across as a totally entitled, condescending asshole more often than not though. Which is fine, I don't want to hang out with him, I want to read book three. Hopefully he'll finish it someday. Not sure. Honestly don't care anymore, it's been so long that the hype has turned to annoyance and it will underwhelm me regardless.
