I would 100% be fine with going back to 4546B with a larger map, more biomes, and new crafting. The game was at its best when it channeled that Robinson Caruso vibe - abandoned, lost, and struggling for survival.

im super hyped. Hope there is more environmental stuff. Like storms that would make huge waves and have lightning light up the sea, I guess the water movement would make the water foggier so the lightning would help you see, and sometimes would reveal you are too close to something big and hungry in a flash. I think it would be cool if there was a boat too.. Not a big fan of the cyclop because it gets stuck on everything, a boat would be on the surface so it would be easy to just drive it somewhere and then go down with a docked vehicle. It could function as a small mobile base but without really giving you any protection from big predators because it doesn't go underwater. Would also be cool to drive it in a storm and maybe some amphibians could climb on board and bite your toes so the ride is more eventful.

As long as the world doesn't end up like Forza Horizon 5 (tons of empty space with a few landmarks scattered in between) and follows the pattern of the original with every biome having some purpose in any stage of the game, I think Subnautica 2 would be at least at the level of the original.

Damn, yeah, it's hard to avoid spoilers sometimes, for sure. I, for one, do not intend to be spreading any kind of spoilers without at least heavy spoiler warnings if it comes to it. That fear of the unknown is what truly what was so great about the first game! Exploring deeper and not knowing what to expect, hearing sounds and freaking out, it was great!

The Architects actually had several core planets and spanned across far more planets in the system, so even if it's not THE homeworld, we can almost guarantee it'll be a planet heavily influenced by their presence. I don't recall seeing a lot of water on the planet at the end of Below Zero, but I could be mistaken

As far as similarity, it's worth noting the original world has a lot in common with earth's oceans. Fish, coral, fungi, kelp, trees, plants, eels, and shark-like, octopus-like, and crab-like creatures. And the penguin-like creatures in Below Zero. Evolutionary similarity is sort of a premise of the game.

in fact if you see the in-game screenshot from subnautica 2 you may think this is looks nice and biome is not so big, but if you look on the sub and on the biome you will see how little this submarine are and if this is so little this biomes are so big and i think there will be a much bigger transport than cyclops.

That is the phrasing that was used specifically in Kraftons' earning call (a multiplayer sequel), and it is one of the clarifications that the developers made in their later post that the game was not multiplayer focused but could be played with friends. I imagine it will work much like multiplayer in The Forest.

Is there confirmation that the Cuttlefish is not native to 4546B? My recollection is that it simply doesn't have much in common, genetically, with other fauna alive at the time of the Aurora incident. Further, the octopodal locomotion method it uses bears a striking resemblance to both the Sea Dragon and Sea Emperor leviathans, despite the different number of tentacles. It's also fairly suggestive that the Cuttlefish we hatch isn't a fully grown adult, though that would be a departure from all the other eggs we hatch, which produce fully grown adults.

I hope subnotica goes in the direction of Ark. Subnotica wrote the book on how a survival game should do a story, whereas Ark has the technical aspects down to near perfection. I do worry that subnotica is a one trick pony and no matter what they do we will “just explore another ocean.” I think they need to lean into building, vehicles, and other tech. It would be cool if they were a supported researcher who is under a penny pinching boss (so basically stranded) so you have to complete your mission within a budget(survive). Then a dlc could be hopping to another world for a similar mission in a different way (like ark). Another thing that would be cool is another intelligent species like mermaid. The sea emperor was a refreshing voice after so long with only the pda. Maybe that made it special, I’m not sure.

Subnautica is a very unique experience, and it's hard to pinpoint exactly what about it specifically that made it such a smash hit. So many things were working together in their favor. I am hoping they can work their magic again and create something the average person hasn't even thought of to make this next one stand out. Being able to play with friends will help some, but that alone isn't enough. Part of me is kinda wondering if they should go more like Minecraft with random seed maps to make each play through unique. Maybe in its own mode if they are still wanting a specifically designed map for the story? But we will just have to wait for more news to know what they are thinking/planning

I would love to see a larger variety of hostile creatures that have unique ways of attacking/surprising the player. That with large open spaces with low visibility and good sound design that drive your anxiety through the roof as you never know what you're seeing or hearing. I think that's part of what made the first one more terrifying than below zero. Being terrified of the deep bassy groans only to realize it's from the reefbacks, and they were harmless. But the first time, I wouldn't dare get close, and those sounds put me on edge.

While that could be an interesting gimmick for the game, I don't know if going through the trouble of making an entire planet will make it all that more interesting in a gameplay sense. I would prefer well-made hand-crafted areas over them trying to just make an entire planet for the sake of it being a whole planet. But if they could manage to do both, I admit it could be cool if done right. What could be interesting is if they were to hand craft points but allow them to generate via random seeds (like Minecraft does) so that replaying the game gives a different experience each time

That's what I was thinking, I don't see them locking equipment or vehicles behind a pay wall, but I'm fine if they want to offer some kinds of cosmetics, especially for vehicles, so people can easily tell their vehicles apart when playing with friends. The playable volume of the map is the same as The Crater, but it was folded up and knotted into multiple tight layers of caves, resulting in a map footprint that was significantly smaller despite equal volume.

Subnautica: Below Zero should just have been named an expansion, like games have had before. Expansions come any range of sizes and generally add a fair amount more than just one or two things. Don't care for early access. Hope it ignores all the lore in Subnautica: Below Service. "Games as a service" is not misunderstood. The only ones who don't understand the known context are the devs. While true, "games as a service" does not mean it will be live service, pretty much almost every company up till this point have used it to mean such.

The publisher (KRAFTON) used the term "Game as a Service," which led players to speculate and assume it would be live service. This was the misunderstanding. The devs (Unknown Worlds Entertainment) had to come out and clarify that, in this case, the game will not be live service (no battle passes, season passes, or subscriptions) but rather feature support and updates for years after release, just like the previous games in the series. I am glad they seem to be going back to what worked about the first one, and while there may still be some lore references to Below Zero, the game will look and feel like a sequel and improvement to the original. I'm excited to get to dive back into mysterious and unknown waters and feel that terror/suspense that made the original a smash hit!

Green Hell and The Forest are pretty much like this as well and it doesn't detract from the experience. I agree as long as they make them interesting to use and not too overpowered. Like, I don't want a sub with a machine gun that can just mow down everything in the path, but modifying vehicles with alien parts (like Marguerit's Prawn suit in Below Zero) would have a lot of potential to be really awesome.

There might be a little bit. For some reason, one of my webcams has more of a delay than the other, which I tried to add delays in obs to get them as close as possible to each other and the audio and even tried to line them up better in editing but clearly it's not prefect. I may end up just replacing the camera that causes the issue with a different one to make it a smoother process in the future

They tried/did VR support in the original, but at the time, overall VR adoption was still pretty low and it took a lot of resources trying to develop and support it for almost no one to use it. That's why, for Below Zero, they didn't bother with it. Maybe now that it's been a bit longer, they will reapproach the idea and maybe it'll be easier now that they are using Unreal Engine 5 🤔 I have no idea myself because I don't own any kind of VR headset, but that would be pretty cool if they do support it again!

If the developers simply follow the formula that made subnautica so good, then I'm really looking forward to sub 2. Create a massive underwater world with many different biomes, make it atmospheric, and in some biomes that sense of dread. As for the storyline, Im not sure. Maybe you're an employee of a rival company to Altera? Slightly different tech? Dunno. Just get it done!

That sounds like an interesting story idea 🤔 I personally have no idea what the storyline will be or how it will play out, but I really enjoyed the radio message system of progression from the first one. You can progress at your own pace or just explore and spend time building. It really left the story in the hands of the player to discover and it helped push them deeper to discover even more as needed

It's nice that they clarified the games-as-a-service line. I'll remain wary and keep my hype in check though. The mere fact that it was even mentioned at all is a gigantic red flag for me.

That leak from the publisher earnings report is actually the entire reason Unknown Worlds put out anything about the game so far. They were planning on releasing info for the game at some point later in the year, but because the leak gave people the wrong impression of the game, they were forced to speak out ahead of schedule and correct the record. While I agree with being wary, I do believe this was just a misinterpretation of the PUBLISHER as to how to summarize the game in a few bullet points. The fact that Unknown Worlds were quick to step in and speak out about it before they were planning to is a good sign (in my opinion) that the game was never intended to be a "game-as-a-service" and they didn't want people believing it would be. If Unknown Worlds themselves had used the term instead of KRAFTON, I would be a lot more wary of the direction of the game. But time will tell...

I’ll be very sad when Subnautica 2 releases because there’s almost no chance I’ll be able to run it. I have to use the lowest graphics setting for like 45 fps on Subnautica. So even if there’s a way to decrease quality my game might crash before I can reach the main menu.

Subnautica 1 does have some big optimization issues that can cause a lot of problems. Hopefully, being built in Unreal Engine 5, Subnautica 2 will be better optimized for older and lower end PCs, but I have no idea. We will have to wait for the Early Access to really start testing it out

I just hope devs are smart and using vulkan.api and that they using UE 5.2 or newer. Valve told all devs back 2015 to use vulkan.api over bloated DX 12. Few devs listens. Years later we know they are right. The proof of with steam os/steam deck. Which use vulkan. Sometime some games even run better. Simple Cus vulkan is open source. Devs can tweak as much or as little as they want. You can’t do that with DX 12. The community for subnatica need to tell devs. Please use vulkan. Not bloated DX 12. There any games run better/butter smooth with vulkan. Doom series, no man sky, there few other.

That is understandable. Early Access can be cool, but it can also spoil the final full game experience if you've already explored different sections as they are being completed. Nothing wrong with waiting until it's either almost complete or until the full release to jump in blind to play through it from beginning to end. It also gives you the chance to make sure the game is what you want/expect before spending money on it!

It was a mixed bag, a lot of people love it, others didn't like some of the changes in direction from the original. There's something special about the complete isolation of the first game that was taken away in Below Zero. It is still, however, a very enjoyable game

I'm thinking early access release will be early 2025. The screenshot we got was from the game running already in Unreal Engine 5, and we know they won't have large portions of the map done yet when it first hits Early Access so I don't believe it'll take them until the end of 2025. Now, if you're talking about full-game release, that may be late 2026 or later. I think the first game was in Early Access for like 3+ years, so we will have to wait and hear their road map for it.

Really hope they don't follow the whole design that most games are following and keep the micro transactions to a minimum or null them altogether, really looking forward to seeing what they have in stock and how they can introduce a different storyline whilst also keeping that Subnautica feel to it that we all love, really would hate to see such a beautiful game franchise go to waste by following the new age of games, simple is best.

I agree. Hopefully, it's no microtransactions, but we will have to see. I'm hoping they will follow how the story is told more like the first game compared to how they did it in Below Zero. Back to just exploring a deep dark ocean, ramping up the creepy factor and mysteries a little, and focusing a little more on environmental storytelling to increase the player's sense of discovery as they play through and find cool things. The potential is definitely there!

I'm not really a huge Subnautica fan, but in my playthrough, I loved the idea of the Cyclops but found it way too complicated. Hopefully we'll finally get those 3 person crews, or a newer (better, possibly) type of Cyclops. Fingers crossed though. Also, this may be an unpopular opinion, but I hope they improve the PRAWN suit too. For all the hype it gets, it still felt like a glorified diving bell with arms.

I hope they improve it too. Imagine if we could make "illegal" modifications to our vehicles using creature parts (like the blade arm that one lady has in below zero). That could be a really interesting way to spice up vehicles in the sequel

I'm mostly very disappointed that the new game isnt taking place on 4546B. How is it a direct sequel without returning to the planet? What happened to Ryley? What happened to the girl from below zero?! These stories both revolve around 4546B, and having the new title take place on a "different ocean planet" seems shallow and boring. I was really hoping for a canonical expansion to Ryley's story. For example, what happens after he launches off in the neptune rocket? We could have seen something where he becomes promoted by Alterra to a cerulean planetoid expert, where he is leading teams back to 4546B to set up outposts on the resource-rich ocean floor! They missed a huge opportunity to expand on the story content from the original two games.

As far as we know, the next one could still be Ryley. He may get sent to another world that was discovered featuring Architect structures, and he is sent there as an expert to determine what the connection is between this new planet and 4546B. It definitely can still be a continuation of his story. But I see what you mean. If it's just another random person not related to the previous games, it might not feel like a true sequel and only feel loosely connected to the other games

It's explained in the video to help clarify the confusion. Below Zero is considered more of a standalone DLC. A lot of the changes they made for Below Zero took the game in a direction a lot of people questioned. As such, they are moving away from that direction and going back to a true full-fledged sequel to the original game. While a lot of people online refer to this new game as Subnautica 3 (since 2 games do currently exist), the devs do not. All official sources are referring to this next game as Subnautica 2 for the time being. It's not "Subnautica 2: Below Zero" so there is "Subnautica", "Subnautica: Below Zero", and the now "Subnautica 2". Hope this helps

I definitely preferred the seamoth/cyclops combo over the seatruck. In the screenshot, the little sub looks to me more like the seamoth, so I'm hoping they are going back to that original formula

Honestly I liked the sea truck. The fact that you could customize it to be whatever you needed it to be was nice. Just need a little sub to get in and out of tight spaces? drop it all. Need an all in one sub hook up everything. In fact on reddit someone was saying how they thought the aquarium was useless on the sea truck. Meanwhile I was using it constantly for easy food and bio fuel. Don't get me wrong I definitely missed my cyclops, seamoth combo but the sea truck grew on me. I just question why we couldn't have all of them. Sure there is some overlap but different people like different things.

@@TheVikingKing125 I liked the seatruck too, not a fan of the cyclop, I just did a playthough of the original with a VR mod and didn't use the cyclop at all. it's just so slow and get stuck on everything.. I just put lots of storage on my prawn and it's fine. The seatruck is a better mobile base than the cyclop imo, less OP as a base, but way more maneuvrable. I think something even more modular than the seatruck would be real cool.

Thanks! Being "natural" on camera is still something I'm working on, but this video was a fully scripted one (I went through what I wrote and didn't deviate as it is a news/update video and I wanted to hit all the points) so that probably plays into it feeling a little less "natural" but for the most part, that's just me 😂 I'll have to sprinkle in some more jokes, I tried to include some, but they did end up being more just allusions to Subnautica, like having your peepers open, and not necessarily jokes. I'll have to see what I can work into future videos. Thanks for the comment!

This is just factually not true. The original map was 4.5km x 4.5km x 1.6km, whereas Below Zero was 3km x 3km x 1.1km. Where the first game continually pushed the player deeper to discover more and progress, the second is pushed along by the story that takes the player to points of interest. At least part of the reason the cyclops was removed is due to the smaller size and depth of Below Zero. Below Zero DOES have more land/surface area to explore, but for a lot of people, that's the worst part.
