Since nit-picking is the thing here at Cinema Sins, I have to point out that the chandelier falling was NOT part of the opening of Phantom of the Opera. That happens at the end of Act One. The opening of Phantom of the Opera features the chandelier rising from the stage to the ceiling, basically the opposite of what happened during A Haunting In Venice. One sin for you!

I find it quite amazing personally that Kenneth's least ambitious effort with his Hercule Poirot films ends up being the one I not only remember most, but genuinely was immersed in. "Murder on The Oriental Express" mainly traded on it's solid visuals and I generally find "Death on The Nile" to have gotten worse over time between too much noticeable CGI and it's effort to be more glossy distracting more than anything. This one was both level headed in design and hitting a better sense of the "Less is more" ideology.

First sin: Poirot is supposed to be Catholic. It's a big part of his Foreignness which is a big part of his character. It also informs his views on crime and psychology. Ignoring this in the context of seances and supposed hauntings is infuriating. "I would welcome any proof of demons" oh ffs
@sourdrop2 ай бұрын
I suppose that Branagh's version of Poirot is meant to be sadder, more broken and worn down by the crimes he solves and the death he sees. He feels deep Weltschmerz and has become bitter from it all. I'm able to appreciate Branagh's version, while also being absolutely enamored with David Suchet's performance as Poirot, especially in the final scene of The Murder on the Orient Express episode of the BBC Poirot. That rosary clutch at the end broke my heart!
@pattierotondo11082 ай бұрын
@@sourdrop I think you need to read Murder on the Orient Express. Both Suchet and Branagh did a TERRIBLE job. Poirot is NOT upset that the killers get away with the crime at all. He is content that justice was served. At the end of the book, he gives Bouc and the doctor the choice of which solution to give the police. Either that all the passengers did it, or, that a mysterious stranger killed Rachett - they pick the latter. As much as I like David Suchet, that episode is AWFUL and NOTHING like the character of Poirot. As for Branagh, he should have stuck to Shakespeare.

I think the reason murderers keep attempting their murder plots in front of the world's greatest detective is because, despite his reputation, they still assume they're superior because he's an immigrant/tourist. It's a theme of Christie's novels that's more relevant than ever today, but the only version to really play up that angle was The ABC Murders mini-series with John Malcovich as Poirot, which unfortunately also sucked all the fun out of the story.

I thought Tina Fey did a tolerable job at being one of my favorite characters... Right up until the end.
