I agree with most of the sins, however regarding Charles Wallace, he is not normal and therefore would not understand stranger danger. To him, they are not strangers. Also he can read his sister's mind, that's why he knows she's coming downstairs and that's why Meg starts to question him. That being said, this movie is a terrible take on the book and is almost as bad as The Last Airbender movie.

Literally everything about this movie makes me mad, especially since Madeline L'Engle wrote the book as something so deep and meaningful. She didn't dress up the story with beautiful models, drama within the school girl clique, and special outfits; she let the story speak for itself and used a lot of real scientific theory (and biblical lore in her later works) to create something relatable and incredible. She is one of my favorite writers because she didn't have to have the fanciest words or the most impossible scenarios to create good content, she simply wrote something she thought people would need to hear and to feel. This book is about something that the movie simply overpasses completely and replaces with an overabundance of special effects and big name actors and actresses, and I really wish the script would have captured the original message that made this novel so integral and inspiring to me. I'm so upset that yet another remake of the text got renovated instead of staying true to form.
@dairoleon26826 жыл бұрын
The movie is a symptom of one of the things the books were trying to warn people about. The same applies to Orson Scott Card's "Ender" series and I'd argue for the Abeloth Arc of the Star Wars EU.

But it had a multi-ethnic cast! That's what's important! I agree completely with you. The thing about the novel is, the race of the characters is inconsequential. THAT is a sign of good writing. When your promotions have to hit people over the head race or gender, you've made a very bad product.

Brent Dreher That’s wonderful and all, but it has literally nothing to do with the point being made. “Meglet” is obviously based off her name because her name is Meg. He’s just saying there are tons of other Meg-related nicknames they could have gone with that are better. Your nickname has nothing to do with your actual name...unless your parents aren’t clever and just arbitrarily called you the first thing they could think of that started with a B.

Brandon White I know, parent-logic....and supposedly (meaning according to them) it's because I said it a lot as a toddler and 'it stuck'. As it's own thing, this movie is okay. But it's nothing to write home about no matter how you look at it. A lot of the events they switched around made things meant to be revelations old news by the time they become relevant, and other details that would have had little impact to take care of were still thrown to the wind for no apparent reason. Like revealing the Love Thing so early on just made it super obvious it was Important later and entirely took away the struggle of the final confrontation. Like the diplomacy thing, or the random ditching of the twins, or the OG starter world of Uriel (why replace centaurs with flowers??? WHY A GIANT LETTUCE MANTA???), or how CW was supposed to be able to read Meg's mind on some level (which might have been hinted at in the whole "I knew you'd come down" thing but then it's never used again so it doesn't make that intent clear), or the weird math thing, the eyes' actual purpose, or how the It's supposed to take over the minds- just, so much was missing. Like, I know it's a lot to try and condense a whole book into a movie, but geez. I think I would have rather it end on a cliffhanger and made us wait for a sequel. Also I don't remember exactly how they phrased things in the book because I haven't read it in years, but I can't help but be icked about the excuse of asshole teens behavior's just because "they have problems too". Like, yeah, everyone's got problems. Still doesn't give you the right to be a dick, also doesn't mean that their victims should have to forgive them. Or like, how it implies that no one is truly at fault for their own shitty behavior because it's some ambient dark entity infecting their souls. There could have been so many moments of enticing surrealism but instead we got Disney Technicolor Joy Ride, which was admittedly pretty in it's own right but completely didn't fit the OG tone of the story.

I got this book along with the others in the series for Christmas last year and finished reading it before this movie came out. I was so excited to see it but I was disappointed after watching it and was left extremely unsatisfied. THEY LEFT OUT TWO WHOLE FRICKING CHAPTERS ABOUT AUNT BEAST AND THAT WAS MY FAVORITE PART TOO!!! Also, they left out the kiss between Meg and Calvin and they completely missed the meaning of the book and it was super rushed. I didn't get any kind of thrill from watching it and I was waiting desperately for something actually interesting to happen, but it never did. Frickin mad af. Only thing I liked about the movie was the actors smh.

Okay, I’m just saying, in the book there was this amazing really memorable moment (to me, at least) where it’s just Charles Wallace and the brain on display. That, combined with Frenchname Madelinewhatsherface’s descriptive skills, burned that scene into my memory. I thought that would be the literal coolest thing to see, just an empty room and that brain. Because this movie’s effects could make it just as imposing and effective as it was in the book, right? We would see... I don’t know, something. I didn’t read the book very closely. But that really struck me, because I imagined some little kid standing totally stoic next to a brain and amazing camera work following Meg’s line of sight almost like black speed lines like in anime and the intense, pulsating rhythm that was perfectly in time with all those children bouncing the ball. Damn, dude, now I miss third grade language arts class... sorry about the wall of text.

This movie is nothing like the book. Not all the acting is good, some of it is good but others suck. The effects are terrible. Mrs What's it is suppose to transform to a flying centaur but she doesn't in the movie. Calvin has no personality and no chemistry with Meg. Madeline, the author, hated the first attempt Disney made to adapt this material which was add for TV This movie s the second attempt and it was on the big screen this time. This movie is worse than the made for TV version.

Movies can be different than books.

At least Madeline didn't have to see this movie, since she died a few years ago.

Calvin is the most annoying thing to me. He is just there as some forced loved interest, but he never feels like there is a reason for him to be there. The movie even points this out several times yet still allows him to be here as a lame side character. There are throwaway characters in movies that are more interesting and developed than this supposed supporting character. Pure injustice to the source material.

Brandon M. Bruursema It is all in the writing. They wrote him to be forced. They could have found a way to make him naturally be in the story but they forced it instead. The character is done better in the book. Ava next time actually read the book before you adapt it.

This movie was TERRIBLE and completely confusing. the books sucked too though just not on as big a scale as this abomination. I dont get why people even like the books I read the first one and it made no sense its not even good. its almost as confusing as this movie.

Charles Wallace isn’t adopted. Also, his full name is “Charles Wallace Murray,” and “Charles Wallace” appears to be his whole first name.
