Back in the summer of 1992, my family took our last "big summer" trip we would have when I was a kid. We were a military family and we were moving from Kansas to Hawaii for my mom's last duty station for her final years in uniform (she was career military.) We had a massive road trip taking us north and hit South Dakota from end to end seeing the Badlands, Mount Rushmore, and also even came across a big area where they had set up shop because of filming locations for this movie, which was really cool to check out as my then 16 year old self took it all in. Despite the "sins" of the movie, I still think this is one of the best movies ever made, especially given the historical context.

I will say many riders used to wrap the reins around it like that. They didn't take too much care of their animals back then and often raced around without thinking on how it would affect the animal, wearing them out quick. Their horse would not want to walk away from the post, it would be happy it would finally have some time to stand still.

@bufordhighwater9872
@bufordhighwater9872 3 күн бұрын
Outside of that being how you hitch a horse, nothing you just said has any basis in fact. The reason they hitched horses instead of tying them to a rail was for the safety of the horse, so if it spooked it would be freed from rail it would be able to bolt without hurting itself or anyone else. Livestock of all varieties were extremely valuable, and an overworked or mistreated horse could easily mean death for a rider.

@fleurtherabbit
@fleurtherabbit 2 күн бұрын
@@bradjohnson482 Yeah, but the simple fact is that that was what it mostly was, a form of transportation. And in the past(and sadly still sometimes in the present) people didn't have much knowledge about what a horse needed or its behaviour. Starting without a warmup straight into canter, for example, created a big chance for injuries and would wear down a horse much faster. Not to mention the rough terrain and the long hours those animal had to work, that's a lot to put a horse through every day. And behaviour, like when a horse would buck because the saddle didn't fit right, they would simply hit or spur it. The problem wouldn’t get solved and the its mental and physical health would decline because of it. I think many cowboys did the best that they could with the knowledge that they had. It just wasn't a lot of knowledge.

@@christopherwebb3517 "Goodfellas was a much better crafted movie." been 20 years since i watched it. so sadly i can't conform or dispute. just saying Costner did a bang up job, tho. and it wasn't a western, it was an anti-western. kinda like how Unforgiven deconstructed all those western tropes, but even moreso. really, this film, just about everything a western woulda done, DWW did the exact opposite, except for filming the scenery. Unforgiven at least had the big gunfight at the end. oh, sorry, I digress. themes and message are important parts of film. DWW's theme, while not exactly subtle, was good/important enough to bump the film up a notch or two, at least wrt the Oscar. we could get into a debate over quality and political messaging here, that's a rabbit hole i'd prefer not to go down. but i AM saying that those things can factor into Oscar consideration, and i think it's OK they do.

Kudos to the spoon reference. My first thought when you brought up the spoon was the "so it'll hurt more" and then it clicked when you said the "not cut out his heart" that that's a Costner movie as well.

When this came out in cinemas, my uncle went to go see it. He lasted about 15 minutes before getting up and walking out. He was so angry at the inaccuracies that he couldn't manage words that weren't cussing (which he wouldn't do because his nieces and nephews were too young, in his opinion, to hear that kind of language.) In his defense, he's got a PhD in American History, specifically in the history of the Civil War. So, he actually does know what was going on at that time.
