The year: 1998. The film: Godzilla. The reviews: disastrous. Seeing as how giant robots will soon be fighting giant monsters on the big screen in Pacific Rim, we thought it would be appropriate to go back and revisit one of the most notorious giant-monster movies of the last few decades: Roland Emmerich's Godzilla.

You're all wrong. You need to watch Godzilla backwards. In that case its a movie about a good lizard that saves New York from an evil army that destroys half of the buildings, it then helps to rebuild the city and after completing the work, it proudly moonwalks into the ocean like a boss.

Skryll229 what are you talking about? I think you commented in the wrong thread. We were commenting on how we liked it as kids, but now realize it was a terrible adaptation of Godzilla as adults. The should have made this as a Jurassic Park -ripoff, instead of trying to shoehorn in the Godzilla mythos into a dinosaur-in-the-city movie.

6laderunner I mean that the Japanese Godzilla is virtually invulnerable to conventional weapons, but every American giant monster movie showcases monsters dying from the average pistol or shotgun. We're too proud of our military to make a monster capable of withstanding a nuke. The only exceptions I can think of are Cloverfield and the Godzilla 2014 remake.

I love this movie for what it is. If you watch it without considering it's title, it's actually not half bad. Their mistake was calling it Godzilla. Zilla is certainly no king of monsters, but it's a pretty neat monster nonetheless, and this movie got me interested in the real Godzilla, so props.

I’m glad America redeemed themselves with Godzilla: King of the Monsters Edit: Ok everyone I feel like this comment is being taken wrongly. I am in no way saying that Godzilla 2014 is bad or that KOTM is definitely “the better movie”, in fact I’d say that many aspects in 2014 are better than KOTM. I just personally enjoyed KOTM more. This is probably due to the fact I saw KOTM first, so when I think of the Monsterverse I think of KOTM before 2014. Also everyone has their own opinions so if you like 2014 more than KOTM, more power to you! We all have different opinions, and as long as you are respectful, you have every right to state them. But none the less, I’m glad America redeemed themselves with the Monsterverse series.

The friggin' helicopters actually make me angry. What GODLY reason do they have for flying within Godzilla's reach? They're helicopters and this isn't an Ace Combat tunnel sequence. They can fly up over the buildings. But no...stay really low so Godzilla can smack 'em down. And then once they do fly up, they're still low enough for him to hop up and eat one.

Skryll229 now this is the right thread for you to comment this. Explain this, How Does this bigger-than-T-Rex Godzilla go invisible multiple times? Or, simply hide in a city like New York? It’s a major plot point, that destroys the entire movie when you think about it, and the movie can’t have a second&third act without that plot convenience. It’s a Micheal Bay sized Plothole

And have one of the Babies survive at the end, so that the film could receive a 40-episode Animated Spin-off Series, where Godzilla Jr. was more intelligent(like a dog, or a chimp, or a dolphin), was incapable of reproduction, and had the Atomic Fire-Breath, fought against various other giant monsters, and the corpse of the Parent Godzilla was Resurrected into a Cyborg dubbed Cyber-Godzilla so we would have a classic Father vs. Son Battle with 2 Godzillas(which by the way sounds more awesome & emotional than just building a Robot Doppelganger of Godzilla to fight him - I'm lookin' at you Mecha-Godzilla), at least the 90's Godzilla Cartoon turned out to be way better than the 70's Godzilla Cartoon.

Godzilla can outrun an Apache helicopter at almost 200 mph, but he/she cannot catch a taxi cab. 3. Godzilla breathed fire twice in the movie, but when he/she has our heroes cornered in a tunnel, he/she conveniently forgets to use this ability. 4. The suspension bridge manages to hold Godzilla's weight after he/she tears the cables out while trying to escape.

You forgot to mention the fact that marine iguanas are native to the Galapagos, not French Polynesia, and they are herbivores, not piscivores. Thus, there is no way a French nuclear test could have possibly mutated a marine iguana egg, and even if it did, there would be no reason for it to develop a taste for fish. You also didn't mention the inaccurate portrayal of the capabilities of the military's combat vehicles and destructive abilities of their weapons (those missiles should not have been able to destroy the Chrysler building).

And don't forget that the heat-seeking missiles should still have been able to lock onto Zilla. A creature that size would be warm-blooded, despite being a reptile, because the sheer size of it would make it difficult for body heat to escape the way it would for something smaller. It's called gigantothermy.

Zachary Bauer You are correct that the aforementioned patch was an "Old Ironsides" patch. However the patch of one's current unit is worn solely on the left sleeve. A patch, if any, that's worn on the right arm (like the guy in 1:37) shows the last unit you went to combat in. Seeing that "Old Ironsides" was worn on that soldier's right arm, he could have just returned from a war zone, been awarded the right to wear "Old Ironsides" on the right arm, then got stationed in NYC.
@Jurassic0Al
@Jurassic0Al 6 жыл бұрын
TheRhuen- That sounds like an urban legend to me. Where "Old Ironsides"- the 1st Armored Division- is based out of is public knowledge. Name a division, fleet, numbered air force, or other major command in the US military and chances are excellent its HQ/main garrison and AO are public knowledge. And, like the old story that it is a crime to wear a correct military uniform in a film, it is just plain bullshit.

Tatu Vihtkari Well if you watched the older movies from Japan, Godzilla is a creature created from the testing of Nuclear weapons. So in the very first Godzilla movie he was his own energy source, his radiation is what gave him what he needed to function. As well there is more than one Gidzilla because in the 1954 movie, Godzilla dies in the end. So this one goes to Athena saying maybe just this one Godzilla so happens to only want food...Even though this abomination in no right deserves this title of a movie....The only Godzilla I know is the Japanese ones.....and of course Reptar from the Rugrats, based off him.

Yeah, Godzilla 2014 was so much better than this one. I mean, it was no Godzilla vs Mothra and the title character got like 15 minutes of combat scenes but it was worth it when he finally showed up. I'm just glad they gave him legitimate atomic breath instead of a roar that somehow sets a line of cars on fire. And yes, the human characters could definitely have been more interesting in both versions. Still, Godzilla actually looked like Godzilla and not a mutant Iguana Rex, kicked the asses of two completely original monsters, and walked away like a boss. I'd call that a successful kaiju movie.

"the title character got like 15 minutes of combat scenes" So, it's an average Godzilla movie? In most Godzilla movies he's in it for 10-20 minutes, kicks some ass, and leaves. The problem with Godzilla 2014 isn't his screen time. It's mostly that we don't feel his presence until halfway through the movie. They didn't tease us enough during the opening credits to really justify that Godzilla didn't actually show up until we're an hour in.

Sure it's cool to see them point out the various errors in these movies but half the time I see them make a joke or talk about the most irrelevant of details and count those as "sins". Every one of these videos is a battle between "you're right, that was a bad mistake" and "you're counting THAT as a bad mistake?" In their defense, it really is funny to see how many cliches they can find in a single movie.

I do understand that this guy does it for the fun of it but It's not just this movie, he'll make a video when movies are just coming out for home release, which is one reason for my outburst, but the main point I tried to make is the fact that he can find so many bad points about something everyone says is so great with seemingly no effort. I got so sick of him looking a gift horse in the mouth (if I said that right) that I finally muscled up the courage to say what I said. I'm not trying to start anything, I'm not trying to rain on everyone's parade, and I'm not expecting people to take me seriously, in fact even now I question why I wrote the comment in the first place. Zilla came in like a force of nature, spreading terror, causing mass destruction and leaving behind yet another Zilla to take its place after it dies... I'd say Zilla carries the spirit of what Godzilla initially was before he became the dancing dinosaur we know today... I will agree, some of the music and scenes were a bit too much like Jurassic Park. It isn't the product itself, it's the way it was executed. Regardless, I really think people should ease up on Zilla. After all, he didn't truly die; he lives on through the one hatchling which survived. He comes back, but in a different sense. I'm just gonna say this... if someone somewhere hasn't seen this movie, from 23 years ago... they were living under a rock. Something that is 23, bordering on 24, years old, does not need a spoiler warning. They had their chance and if they haven't seen it yet, they probably aren't going to see it.

AH-64 Apache helicopters are equipped with AGM-114 Hellfire missiles which is laser guided not a heat seeker, Which means that the AGM-114 could have locked onto Godzilla anyway.

Everyone who watches this video make sure to watch the trailer for the NEW GODZILLA movie by Warner Brothers, it looks like someone finally got smart and returned to the original ideas/themes!

This 1998 version was the "New Coke" of the Godzilla franchise. They made a stupid choice in changing his look, taking away his atomic breath, and making him smaller and weaker when the motto of the movie was "size does matter". After looking at the financial mega-success of Legendary's / Warner Bros 2014 version, which kept the traditional traits of Godzilla and took a serious approach to making the film, TriStar & Emmerich must be feeling embarassed right now

Godzilla was NEVER "Just a very big animal." He's supposed to be a representation of the atomic bomb. A force of nature that can NOT be stopped or defeated, only endured.

I never really noticed before (I guess because the last time I watched this movie HD flat screens didn’t exist yet) but soon as they get to Madison square garden it’s just nonstop blue strobe light flashing in every scene, like almost an hour of your screen being absolutely flashbanged.

The new Godzilla actually IS Godzilla this time. As in, the TRUE King of the Monsters...110+ meters tall, roughly 328+ feet. I think they MIGHT actually have it right this time. ('bout goddamn time.)

The new Godzilla movie is going to be much more like the original. The monster will actually look like Godzilla rather than some mutated lizard and from what I've heard he will actually be fighting another monster (Like the Japanese originals). Let's just hope the movie doesn't suck.

This is Zilla not Godzilla, because it didn't interpret the real Godzilla. They just made another weaker version a much more realisitc Godzilla here, because the real Godzilla is waaayyy too strong.

This Zilla is not Godzilla because the owners of the Godzilla copyright or whatever it is revoked it about a year after this movie was released, but until then, it was Godzilla.

MidnightSt Not disputing that, just pointing out that realism is irrelevant since Godzilla is meant to be symbolic.

Nathaniel Stanford "its symbolic" Of what? The theme of the old movies seemed to be "yo be careful with that radiation shit", the theme of the new one is "oh we can't/shouldn't stop nature!" but that lesson sort of falls apart when you not only break the laws of physics, you arbitrarily make the military extremely incompetent and ignore every single effective weapon they would have ready to go in that situation. 350 Feet tall or not, half the weapons employed by the navy could destroy godzilla and the other two monsters very, very quickly. They are built to kill gigantic ships made of steel, after all. And that's not even mentioning the fact that a creature from way, way, way in the past would have loads of trouble with the different atmosphere, or disease. All being 350 feet tall does for you when you have an immune system millions of years outdated is give the diseases more food and room to grow. And all of that isn't even mentioning the square/cube law and the obvious problems involved. Godzilla is unrealistic in a silly amount of ways, this is a bad thing when you try to make your movie have a message. It's like saying "eat your carrots OR YOU WILL EXPLODE AND DIE PAINFULLY". After earth and avatar have the same problems of completely ignoring the rules of biology and acting like their message is still worth a damn at the end. They should have just done what pacific rim did and tried to make an enjoyable movie instead of a silly message. My problem with the move itself is that godzilla is in it for about 6 minutes. And most of that is him moving extremely slowly and walking through buildings/bridges. There's about a minute and 30 seconds of monsters fighting in the entire movie. I did not watch the movie to see EOD guy talk to people. Tl;dr: Avatar was ferngully with CGI. Godzilla 2014 is ferngully with CGI and a couple fight scenes. Nature-wanking movies always make me roll my eyes. The new godzilla doesn't have the same message/symbolism as the original, it's even more dumb. The fact that the monsters had to have arbitary EMP powers to make them even stand a chance against modern technology blows a hole straight through their message, which seems to be "humans can't stop nature". Actually, a bit of competence by the military and the movie would have been over 15 minutes after the monsters were spotted. It tries to drive a point with a faulty premise. This much willing suspension of disbelief should not be required.
