Actually, using a coat / cloak as an off-hand parrying weapon is a historically accurate fencing technique. The idea is to trap your opponents blade long enough to stab him with yours. Ironically that may be the most accurate part of the first fight.

A little clarification about the rules (according to the first movie at least): The immortal powers start after your first death. That is why the villain stabbed him in the belly, to awaken his powers thus allowing him to try and take it afterward via decapitation. That is also why the first belly stab was painful, he wasn't an immortal yet. Also, stabs will still hurt. They'd just heal faster but not Wolverine fast. Also also, since the immortality starts from the first death, that is why Sean Connery is older than Connor. He died the first time at an older "age" (see what I did there?).

1:17 Actually, the sword and cloak technique is a fencing style detailed in Ragione di adoprar sicuramente l'Arme written by Italian fencing master Giacomo di Grassi in 1570. It was used to protect the off hand, to distract the opponent, and to bind his blade. It also matches the style of rapier the actor was using, so it was likely a deliberate choice. @3:21 Question: The Kurgan knows the only way to kill an immoral is to chop off his head. So why is he wasting so much time with this stab? Answer: It is a non-fatal technique for them to temporarily incapacitate an immortal during a duel instead of beheading them. @12:40 Question: If the Kurgan knows exactly where Connor is now, why hasn't he tried to kill him before? Answer: In this scene, they were both inside the church. There is a rule that immortals are forbidden to fight in a holy ground since this serves as a sanctuary.
@ukmediawarrior6 жыл бұрын
According to the rules of the Game you can't ambush someone, you have to declare yourself to them before the fight. Only really, REALLY evil immortals that we see in the TV show ever try to behead someone from hiding. And holding the coat is a classic defence when in a sword or knife fight. Coat, cape, scarf, anything that you could use to absorb a blow or tangle up the sword hand so you get a free attack. As for the age of Ramirez, you become immortal when you suffer a sudden death, like being shot, stabbed, run over or whatever. You could, technically, be able to become immortal but still die of old age if you never suffer such an incident.
@Rob_Thorsman6 жыл бұрын
According to Endgame it requires "the shock of a violent death," which basically means someone has to murder you.

lol, the Kurgan didn't behead him because Connor had to die first. It's just the rules of the Game.

Great film, I didn’t like the sequels at all. Christopher Lambert did Highlander sequels, but he wouldn’t even do that Mortal Combat sequel. When a guy who does bad sequels won’t do a bad sequel, it must be really bad Left out Connor shooting a Nazi. I imagine that’ll take a sin or two off. If that got a sin, well I did Nazi that coming. “Whatever you say Jack, you’re the master race.”

Btw, watch closely the scene where Connor gets kicked out of the village, the villager extras really are kicking him up the arse; friend of mine knew one of the extras, Lambert apparently turned up late for shooting, kept them waiting for hours (he was by all accounts a bit of an arrogant prick, whereas Connery hung out with the extras and chatted, etc.) The director said make it look like they meant it, so they... did. :)

@mr.hitchens Жыл бұрын
@@the98themperoroftheholybri33 I fear you've missed the point. Mr Connery said it was almost impossible to say the line without laughing. If you look you can see he is. Ridden from denotes riding. This is not the same as saying "I've just ridden from spain" which is of course impossible. Saying "I've just traveled from spain" would naturally include a boat and would have made sense as you obviously cannot ride a horse across the English channel. I suppose you could ride it through the eurotunnel, although I'm not sure the timeliness fits. Anyway, its a silly fun film and it has a Queen soundtrack, so it's a fun through back to better times. Pleasure chatting with you 98th, must ride off now...... tally ho.
