I think the circus cart being so far away and the kids being near "the only house for miles" are just interpretations of how nebbercracker just remembers the most significant details of how things happened. That is probably why there seemed to be a random bush the kids hid behind in what seemed to be the actual middle of nowhere, because it's still just the neighborhood

I mentioned it in an earlier comment, but this movie made me feel very strange and uncomfortable. I wasn’t scared. I just felt... weird. My heart would race, my head would spin, and I would get sweaty and be unable to look. It was almost like I felt bad about watching it. Maybe it was the animation style.

Nebbercracker's cardiac arrest and the way it was shown would be something I'm not sure would fly even in quite a few R-rated flicks, I have absolutely zero clue how they got away with just mere PG. The opening fifteen minutes are beyond creepy, although the movie becomes more kid-friendly as it progresses.
