Not surprised at all from the lack of sludge under the valve cover. As long as quality oil is used with reasonable OCI's (i'd say 4K max on conventional / synthetic blend and 7.5K max on full synthetic), a decently designed engine shouldn't have sludge, even after a million miles. The fact that its still running at a million with the original engine suggests it didn't suffer from extended OCI's. If you do short OCI's and use a quality synthetic, you shouldn't see much varnish either.
