I'm a geologist and I can say with certainty that it would NOT be felt on the east coast. The complex geology of the Rockies makes that impossible. And- a 9.6 hitting San Francisco is also not possible. Earthquakes over 9 are rare and only occur at subduction zones- events called a megathrust earthquake. Seattle could see a 9+ quake someday- the Cascadia subduction zone is locked and overdue for a big one. Worst case scenario for LA and San Francisco is a large-scale rupture of the fault, with a magnitude of around 8.0. A tsunami is possible, although not very likely, and it would not be nearly as big as the one shown- which is exaggerated. A wave that big would only happen after a megathrust event, or if a large volcano or mountain undergoes sector collapse.

You missed the biggest one of the movie. The San Andreas faultline is a transform (or lateral / strike slip) fault, meaning it slides sideways against itself, not up or down. That means it doesn't displace a large body of water the way a convergent fault does, and thus isn't capable of spawning a massive tsunami like in this film.

I suppose she pulled the glass out of that dude’s leg because they weren’t near a hospital or the hospital was destroyed, but normally you don’t pull the object out. Leaving it in prevents the bleeding from worsening, especially if the object is in the leg (femoral artery). It also prevents damage that happens from pulling an object back out. Infection and such can be taken care of later. Bleeding to death is harder to fix.

All jokes aside I watched this when I was much younger and the death scenes, especially the chef on fire in the restaurant, stayed with me for a LONG time, and that old couple in the tsunami is heartbreaking. The special effects are amazing and this movie was, frankly, terrifying to young me (even tho I don't live anywhere near the US). Now I almost never watch disaster movies. Edit: it wasn't actually that long ago, about 3-4 years (I wasn't that young but it feels like I was). I'm sorry if I exaggerated a bit.

Helicopters are significantly harder to fly than fixed wing aircraft so many rotor pilots often start out learning flight basics in planes. Even if it's only basic flight lessons it's easier for them to get comfortable with radio communications, navigation, engine gauges, and flight surfaces in a plane where it's far more stable. However, I do agree that if the Rock wanted my stolen truck I'd give it to him, hell if he wanted my actual paid for truck I'd give it to him.

The year this came out, my mom's last sibling died. She was the only one left..since we have friends in CA, I took her and a friend. The movie was so over the top, but the special effects and story was like a rollercoaster ride. They had a great time. My mom noted that the only special effect missing was The Rock without his shirt. The movie helped snap her out of her funk.

Yeah it really bothered me that Dwayne's character not only abandoned his duty to los anglees rescue but also technically hijacks that rescue chopper for personal reasons...during a massive emergency and natural disaster and nothing happens to him... not too mention multiple counts of theft and looting. this is like if firefighters just suddenly abandoned fighting the wildfire and or evacuating people then stole several local vehicles and or rescue helicopters to go save their individual families two counties over.

Here's a missed sin that I couldn't get past - he dives out of the boat to swim toward the building Blake's trapped in. It's never a good idea to dive into deep water if you don't know for sure that there isn't something right below the surface, but in this scenario, when there's rubble and debris EVERYWHERE, the last thing that an emergency responder would do is dive; he'd definitely slide in feet-first just off the side of the boat. Diving here would be a quick and easy way to get some rebar right through the forehead.

Missed Sins: Why the fuck is her car so destructive? Do you see it just wrecking the rails and shit as it goes by? That shit is meant to stop you from going over the edge. Her car should be completely torn apart. She landed right next to her phone, that doesn't have a single scratch on it, damn phones are resilient these days. One thing that pisses me off about this movie is that this earthquake doesn't feel like an earthquake from people's perspective. California is fucking separating, shouldn't people be thrown all which way and hitting fucking walls and stuff!? To further show how powerful this earthquake is, the land is rolling like it's water and the buildings are falling over like they found out they are gonna be in a movie with the Rock. California buildings are built to withstand earthquakes too that is like standard procedure. The sheer force of this should be killing people, not just shaky cam. 15:05 Not only is LA completely wrecked, but it looks fake as shit. Why is it when things are breaking or just incredibly dangerous people are always flooding the area? Did the citizens of LA find out they are gonna be in a movie with the Rock or something? This entire endeavor of the guys trying to warn of the earthquake seems irrelevant as fuck. Two cities have already fucking been destroyed and now a 'warning' has been issued. The main shit already happened and this shit isn't not going to be reported or known about.

11:46: Yes, it can, but only if you're a seismologist, so actually no. The way the focuses of earthquakes are found is via three separate seismology stations in different parts of the globe. (The focus is where on the map and how deep in the crust the earthquake occurred, whereas the epicenter is just where on the earth's surface the earthquake occurred.) The amplitude observed at and distance between each station help pinpoint exactly where in the earth's crust and at what location AND what magnitude the earthquake was. If an earthquake is strong enough, vibrations are so palpable that they can be felt from hundreds of miles away, but not as far as the east coast from the San Andreas Fault line. Also, this movie's disaster sequence is impossible for three main reasons: 1. The San Andreas faultline isn't nearly substantial enough to cause an earthquake stronger than 8.5 on the Richter scale, at least, as far as we have observed. 2. Showing the fault split open is unrealistic, as San Andreas is a transform fault, where two tectonic plates are sliding past each other, and what would really happen in this scenario is that all scenery along the fault line would move in opposite directions along with the plates. Roads would look like this from above: | | ------- | | One would not see land being separated by a huge crevasse for miles. 3. The San Andreas fault can't cause a tsunami, as tsunamis of this style are caused by earthquakes on the seafloor that displace water via shifting up or down from below. This can only occur at divergent or convergent plate boundaries, where tectonic plates are either smashing into or pulling away from each other. Seeing as though San Andreas has plates sliding past each other, very little would happen if the part of the fault exposed to the ocean slipped, as little water would be displaced. SCIENCE. P.S. I know that one finds this nitpickiness bothersome if they just want to watch a disaster movie, but honestly, fantasy requires some root in reality, and I'd be far more interested to see a disaster movie about disasters that are plausible. It makes the ride more thrilling because the plot is compounded by the foreboding question of "what if?"

Very good science, and to your point, no the San Andreas fault can't produce such a quake that it is felt on the East Coast or above and 8.5 (although I thought the limit was an 8.2). However, powerful earthquakes in history have been felt physically from some distance, such as the Haiyuan Earthquake of 1920, which had an epicenter in central China but was physically felt as far away as Norway. I used to read trivia in my spare time.
