@pwrserge833 жыл бұрын
@Gwyn and Gold ok... 1. The Terran Federation is the exact opposite of "muh' fascism"... It is a meritocratic, voluntary service democracy. In fascism citizenship guarantees service, in the Terran federation, service guarantees citizenship. The contrast is vital. You can live your entire life in the federation as a civilian, and the only legal difference between you and a volunteer citizen is the franchise. (Which, affects your life not one bit.) As a civilian, you have no real responsibility to the state beyond taxes. As citizen, you can participate in the governing of the state, but have a responsibility commensurate with that power. If the Terran Federation was actually fascist, Jhonny's dad would have had that long rant about how citizenship is useless. 2. During the initial invasion of Klendathu, they had no idea what the hell they were dealing with. They though they were dealing with mindless insects which made shock infantry tactics more than adequate. Don't forget, the Federation military had decades of peace where they had no near-peer enemies, which means that their military structure was more of a peacekeeping quick reaction force than a real military. 3. Nuking the planet from orbit sounds like a great plan until you realize that most of the bug population centers are deep underground and more or less impossible to get to even with nuclear munitions.
@pwrserge833 жыл бұрын
@Gwyn and Gold Kinda, you have to do federal service. While most people serve in the military, it is not the only form of federal service. The whole idea is to demonstrate a willingness to sacrifice personal gain for the benefit of the federation as a whole before you are given a stake in governing the federation. It's not compulsory. In fact, it is even discouraged. You can live a full and happy life as a civilian with the only loss being the ability to vote or hold public office. That's the core ideal of the Terran Federation. It's the Cincinnatis model of service for the public good. Cincinnatis was a man who was elected, twice, as the dictator of the Roman Republic who was content to return to the life of a simple farmer once his services were no longer needed by the Republic. One of the reasons why I think this book needs to be mandatory reading for all children is to understand a very basic concept. Power over others can only be granted to those who have demonstrated a willingness to sacrifice personal benefit for the common good. The franchise is power over others, by definition. As such, it is a terrible responsibility that needs to be treated with the respect it deserves, not simply a tool for personal advancement. That is the core problem with the universal franchise. To quote Heinlein, "Something freely given has no value". If a person doesn't have to EARN the right to vote, they will put no value in their vote and simply use said vote to advance their own interests. I think the world would be a much better place if we lived under the guiding principles of the Terran Federation. Individual rights are universal. Power over others is only granted to those who have power over one's own desires. It doesn't matter who or what you are. If you demonstrate the ability to put the needs of others ahead of your own, only then can you be trusted with power over others.

I also noticed on a few of the sins, that some of them were answered in the movie at different points. Zander had mentioned he was shipping out to command school during the football game, might have been some type of ROTC type program. Also Denise's reckless leaving the spaceport, she mentions her instructors could not keep up with her and Zander tells her to not go faster than port speed or they get pilot privileges revoked. - Seems very nit picky- As can be seen in the comments this movie is much deeper than most people realize. The satire, the great actors that had smaller roles, It was really spot on. There is a reason it has been watched so much. I think at one time it had one of the highest DVD sales.

It tries to show you it from the perspective of a civilian that doesn't realize they're being manipulated to believe what they are, which is why you don't see the actual leaders, and only see the military recruiters at best.
@Foxtrot3693 жыл бұрын
@Molecule Mind What exactly do you think fascism looks like from the inside? Have you seen pictures or footage of the _(non-Jewish)_ German public during the 1930s? They all seemed pretty happy and obedient, because they were oblivious to what was really happening and they didn't question their government's propaganda that everything was great and only going to get better. Besides which, what else do you call the whole "Citizen" vs "Civilian" thing in the movie? Where Civilians can't vote, have to pay for education & aren't guaranteed a licence to have children. Whereas Citizens can vote, get free education and have priority licenses to have children. And the only way to become a Citizen is to work for the Federation, military, teaching or test subject. What else is that other than fascism?

The shower scene made sense to me, it's a society that has no use for ideas like personal privacy (also seen elsewhere, no one is ever alone), or anything personal for that matter, only the utility that the individual can render unto the state. It's just a standard trope in fascist literature. That's the only reason it's in the movie. The humans were not at war with the bugs until the bugs attacked Earth via the giant asteroid that destroyed Buenos Aires. It was explained that the Intellectuals *failed* in their revolt because they lacked a moral science, which in turn is what allowed the veterans' governance to remain stable. It is pretty strongly implied that the humans were the ones who launched the asteroid at Earth so they could droll up some nationalist anti bug sentiment and get the Earth government to agree to attack Klendathu. There is no way that the bugs could have managed to even hit our solar system let alone Earth from the other end of the galaxy. And if that asteroid was traveling at less than light speed it would have taken thousands of years to arrive in our solar system.
@patrickrada2923 Жыл бұрын
@@VicariousReality7 *"The ability to launch a meteorite ACROSS AN ENTIRE GALAXY to hit a planet would require a nearly godlike technology and precision"* Not only that. Considering that asteroids only move at a tiny fraction of the speed of light, this asteroid would take millions upon millions of years to hit Earth. Due to the low speed and star density, the boulder would likely be captured by some star rather than make it through to Earth. Even if these bugs could bring this asteroid up to the speed of light and maintain the speed the whole way, it would still take tens of thousands of years and the release of energy at the speed of light upon impact with the Earth would have destroyed not only the city but the entire planet. Assuming the boulder was from the Oort cloud or one of the asteroid belts, the question still remains as to why space surveillance could have missed the bugs operating in such proximity. How do bugs actually move through space? But another completely different logic error: If this asteroid has been traveling for thousands or millions of years, then the bugs must have sent it off all that time ago. Why should they do this? At that time, people were still relatively primitive creatures without space travel and no one knew anything about the other. Consequently, they were not at war with each other and had no reason to send the asteroid.

These Nude-Scenes show that even back then, the Actors were deranged enough to do such Shameless, unneeded Scenes, just like nowadays. But no, nowadays people are just much more desensitized and more stupid. I mean, its just common practice to have them for NO Reason, even if they feel incredible displaced. Verhoeven also directed Robocop, and you can see many similarities with the political satire, distopian militaristic society, and over the top gore. Robocop also incorporated a bit of propaganda like they do in Starship Troopers, but with commercials about war-themed toys and unabashed consumerism, as well as outrageous news briefs on tv rather than the "Would you like to know more?" segments. OCP and the Federal Alliance had similarities, and villains like Clarence Boddiger, his gang of thugs, Dick Jones, and ED-209 were represented by the bugs. Both great movies. But still the best scene in movie history is when Boddiger's henchman Emil crashes into the vat of toxic waste and gets run over and splattered.

I feel the same. I watched the movie first, read the book years later. At first I was disappointed that they screwed up the adaptation. It had a few parts that were similar, but it's like Vaerhoeven stopped reading the book while they were in boot camp. And he did, apparently! But the movie is so lame, campy, and just FUN. The book is completely different, and has a very serious tone. I enjoy them both immensely. The sequels of the movie, not so much, although at least in ST3:Marauder they have power armor. The animated episodes were great too, and I'm glad Casper Van Dien has held on to the role of Rico all this time. Hell, if they did a reboot (one can hope!), hopefully he would be in it. Maybe not as Johnny (DING) though, too old now. Man, now I want to go watch the movie AND read the book again..
