Everything Wrong With Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter is a movie that should be fun. Or funny. Or charming. Or winky. But it's none of those things. It's basically a straight vampire action film that just happens to have a famous president in it. It's weird, man. Oh, and sinful as all hell.
Thursday: Classic action sins... I think.
Remember, no movie is without sin! Which movie's sins should we count next?

For anyone curious, gold and silver were thought to be "pure" metals in the past because they didn't corrode. Silver was especially thought of as pure because it was more of a "white" metal, and white was always seen as clean or pure. This also translates to the myth about mirrors, because back in the day many mirrors were polished silver behind glass. So you couldn't see a vampire in a mirror because the mirror itself was made of a pure metal, silver, which wouldn't reflect evil. You're welcome.
@dragoncat3499
@dragoncat3499 3 жыл бұрын
So if vampires were real, they would have reflections in today's mirrors, since we don't make them out of silver anymore?
@Kosh800
@Kosh800 3 жыл бұрын
@@dragoncat3499 That's the idea, yeah. Silver was seen is a pure metal and holy metal because it didn't rust, corrode, or oxidize.. Then again today we mostly use aluminum which might fit their idea of a pure metal too since it doesn't rust, but it does oxidize so maybe not. Pure silver doesn't do either, so I'd say aluminum wouldn't fit the bill the same way pure silver does.
@Lightdevildarkangel
@Lightdevildarkangel 3 жыл бұрын
@@Kosh800 That brings up a question then... would they maybe be distorted images instead of just nonexistent in a modern mirror? Or would you expect the mirrors to reflect the vampires anyway?
@Kosh800
@Kosh800 3 жыл бұрын
@@Lightdevildarkangel Based on the lore, the idea was that the only reason they didn't appear was because of the pureness/holiness of the metal. If the metal isn't pure then in theory it should reflect their image just fine. Even something like a glass cup should show their reflection.

silver is a sterile material. still used for medical purpose and surgery.
@John73John
@John73John 3 жыл бұрын
The whole "not appearing in mirrors" thing is because most mirrors are backed with silver. But there are other ways to make a mirror, which is obviously what Henry has so the girls he takes home don't notice his lack of reflection and panic. It's the same reason vampires don't show up in photographs -- photographic film uses silver nitrate. I like this explanation much better than "they don't have souls". I mean, a hammer doesn't have a soul, but I can see its reflection. A rock doesn't have a soul, but I can take a picture of one.

Not been done over and over, and that was really nice. Plus Abe Lincoln hunting vampires is just badass and I like how they made it still fit into history and it's like the government just covered up the vampire stuff lmao. You know...this honestly feels like a better Assassin's Creed movie than the movie titled "Assassin's Creed" that we got. Think about it: You have a recorded/look back at a famous character, who goes around meeting other famous characters and doing things they were historically famous for. The secret badguy faction that the hero is fighting against, is aligned with the same real-life faction that ended up losing historically. All this movie needed was for Abraham Lincoln to be best friends with a historic inventor in that time period and that's like 90% of the way there.

Imagine the movie universe for this: Washington was aware of vampires which is why in his Farewell Address he wanted to prevent US military conflict in Europe since Transylvania is the home of vampires. A few Transylvanians actually try to reach the US and John Adams goes to stop them during the French Quasi Wars making him the first official vampire hunter but after the war a few Transylvanians managed to settle in the US and the vampire hunter title just gets passed down eventually reaching Lincoln. 🤔

Daniel Day Lewis is a phenominal method actor- this would require him to actually dress as Lincoln and kill vampires to get a feel for how to portray it in the movies- not that he's have a problem mind you :)
@rdp16rulez

@@eclipsehorse8693 That right there is the key to the truth. Daniel Day Lewis didn't retire from acting because he lacked a desire to act anymore. He retired because after going method and killing vampires to prepare for playing Lincoln, he realized that he was really good at hunting vampires and now does that in his spare time. When he's not making his own clothes, that is.

I read the book, and trust me, this movie is NOTHING like the book, outside of the general premise. It's been a few years since I've read it, but I remember nothing about Lincoln getting super powers. He used his wit and tools, and the element of surprise, to kill the vampires, and he failed multiple times before he finally succeeded in killing one. And I'm pretty sure the rule about vampires not being able to kill vampires was not in the book. On the contrary, Lincoln had a whole group of good vampires to protect him from being executed while he ran for President. That would be pretty silly if they weren't even able to touch each other. Also, Henry did not keep his vampirism a secret from Abe for that long. He found his nearly dead body, nursed him back to health, and I believe Abe figured it out before he was back on his feet. Also, they changed the ending. The book ends with Henry in a bar, but he meets with a man, telling him that some people are too interesting to let die. It heavily implies that he turned Abraham into a vampire after his assassination to revive him from the dead. The book sets up this possibility after one of his kids die, and he offers to do the same for them, even though Lincoln refuses to let him do that.

Yeah, weeeell, technically, "based on" a true story literally just means you included an actual person's name or a real location, etc., it doesn't have to be even loosely based around the facts, just any setting of the true story, so since Abe Lincoln was in the story, yeah it's "based on a true story". It's not a true story, it's not based on actual events except the most general, like the war itself, it's just based around a true story, that story being "abe lincoln was an American who became president and then the civil war happened", that's a true story. Then they threw in a bunch of untrue stuff, but yeah, you can still say, fecetiously, that it's based on a true story because English is stupid like that XD

I guess the story itself would be a parody of actual history, but usually a parody is a joke twist on a work that's been done, a piece that is original but funny is just comedy in general, a piece that pokes fun at political or societal norms or events is satire, so it could count as satire maybe, and comedy, but I think it wouldn't be a parody unless it was a joke twist on another work, this is just a fictional and subsequently comedic twist on a real person and events skewed way out of proportion but I don't know if that falls into the parody category.
@scaper8
@scaper8 3 жыл бұрын
Honestly, give the book a read. The movie is fun and all, but plays really loose with history (even more so than just having vampires would imply). The book, on the other hand, is really interesting because it worked really hard to fit into real history. The premise being that the history in the book is our history, this is just the pieces we don't know. So, for example, Lincoln was never in a place he wasn't at a time he wasn't. If he was known to be somewhere at a given time, he is 100% locked into that location. It's a really good read for reasons like that.
