Hey Yammie, I'm 5'10 and I have persuaded my parents to let me move from dirtbikes to sports-bikes. I haven't ridden my dirtbike in about 3 years because of no-lifeing CSGO and I want to get back into riding but I SERIOUSLY want a sports bike. Which beginner bike do you recommend I should buy? I was thinking a Kawasaki 400 ABS; what do you think?

You just about hit the nail on the head when it comes to the fact we ascribe meaning to objects. Here's why I'm attached to mine. My father owned 2 BMW S1000RR bikes, one for the road and one for the track. Back in 2011 he was at a track day at Barber Motorsports Park when, entering the corner that the museum overlooks, he had a stroke at 138 mph. He was a fit and muscular dude so he survived the initial trauma. He however succumbed to his injuries about a month later. I was left with his road going S1000 as the track bike was totaled beyond repair. Back then I was scared of the 600 I tried to ride earlier that year. But I knew I was never going to get rid of my dad's bike. I didn't build up the nerve to ride the BMW until 5 years later. That whole time it stayed in our garage with 1500 miles on it, untouched. The nerve came about after we took it to a dealership to get the fuel lines and a bunch of other stuff replaced. That was when the service manager, same person who helped my father out getting his track bike ready, told me that I either had to ride it or sell it. As it would just fall apart if I let it sit for any longer. Since then I've logged 15K additional miles on the bike that I've affectionately named Spitfire. She's taken me to many places and events since I started riding, and I've met so many new friends along the way. The connection I have to this piece of machinery is a strong one. Even if it breaks down and can no longer function, it's turning into a museum piece in my home lol. Having something that my father was the original owner of, and being able to take care of it myself, is something I will always cherish. Little note about the bike as well. After my father's accident, we had the original stock fairings from his track bike installed on his street bike I ride today. My bike means alot to me lol.

To be honest, the reason I like the S1000RR is exactly because it's soulless, it's not got the history of the GSXR and the looks of the Fireblade, it's a motorbike that's there to be a motorbike, it does exactly what it was designed to do and nothing more, It really reflects the German way of approaching things, summed up quickly as "get it done in the most efficient and effective way possible" (Not to mention that I definitely think it looks the best of all the 1000cc superbikes at the moment)

I’ve had mine for 2 years and I can honestly say it’s the ultimate riding machine. Incredible power, top notch brakes, screaming exhaust note, buttery power delivery, great super sport riding position, top tier electronics, extremely agile and pliable suspension..If soulless means it does exactly what you want it to do and it begs for more, then yeah it’s “soulless” and i love it.

I own a 2014 BMW S1000R. While it's not exactly the same bike, I adore it! I would compare it more to a sniper rifle then to a soulless machine. Something that's very reliable and precise, you know what to expect every time you get on it. For me it's the ultimate combination of power, looks, reliability and support/comfort (electronics, suspension, handlebar heaters, riding modes etc.). What's left to say: Good work on experimenting with new projects Yammie! Keep it up! Cheers from Switzerland

I have a '17 S1KR...not sure why everyone who doesn't own says it's soulless or just another in line 4 "screamer" engine like it supposed to be something negative. There's something to be said about a machine people criticize for being being too good....and I find it quite rowdy and exciting when you want (aka wheelies all day) or if you use another mode you can ride like a cruiser with the dynamic suspension.

6.5k miles on an in-line 4 cylinder and no issues? WOAH what a suprise! bike costs around 20.000€ and has no issues in the first 6000 miles lmfao, any other bike costing one third of this has the same reliability. Doesnt mean its reliable either, I think you can judge that if your bike stands 60.000 miles with no issues at all.

I have a 2015 S1000RR and I love it. After years or Harleys and other Cruisers, I decided to try sport bikes. The Ninja 1000 i had my eyes on sold a week before I got home, so I looked through their inventory again and saw an all black S1000RR. My last bike being a 2008 Harley Crossbones, which was mostly blacked out except for the chrome spring up front, it caught my eye as the bike I needed. I was actually scared to take a sport bike out for the first time, as I have heard horror stories and also the day I bought it, it was raining a bit. Before I rode it off the lot (and I did, I just left my car there for 2 days, haha) they told me to put it in rain mode as it will be a lot more forgiving. But i did fall in love with it. Being a bit older I worried about my knees being crouched up all the time, but i find i have fewer back issues on a sport bike than on a cruise. Since then, I bought a 2000 Ducati 900 supersport. It is also beautiful, but more for the sounds. It has that L-Twin and a dry clutch that rattles. I love both my bikes.

I actually switched from a Ninja 1000 (if you not confuse it with the ZX-10R), which is called Z1000SX in Europe to a 2017 S1000RR. Although the Kawa was a really nice bike, it was way to boring for me. The engine was really good, but the sound was.. meh. It really felt weighty arround corners and stuff, so I finally decided to go for the BMW. And oh my god was that one of the best decisions I made in my life. This bike is so absolutely fantastic in every way. When you drive it normally and the engine screams at you: "FASTER! HIGHER REV! GO, GO, GO!", especially since the SC Project S1 Slip On is mounted. And when you finally close the throttle it thanks you with some slight backfire. Man I love this thing. I will never get how THAT can be clicinal it all. For me it is pure emotion driving that thing. I'm totally looking forward to go on the race track next year.

The whole inline 4 is soulless argument is kinda BS. It just has a different character but has just been over done. A uncorked inline sounds like an F1 car where as a v4 sounds like a v8 but the v4 is much more rare and desirable. Funny thing is the Yamaha R1 crossplane inline sounds exactly like a v4 (same firing order)

I would agree with your take on the S1000RR-- soulLESS. This is exactly why I love this bike. Its like a Decepticon from outer space. It is a clinical weapon. It is cold and calculated. When I ride the bike its telling me that its better than me. It is as if it is saying "you are NOT worthy of me... let me ride myself you mere mortal!"

Love my S1000RR. It's a bike that I can take out on the road or the track - push hard, and the bike just melds. I don't have to think about it's quirks or foibles - it just does exactly what I tell it to. And then when I'm tired and sore with miles to go before I get home, I've got a comfortable seat, heated grips and cruise control for the straight slabs. It's a superbike with lights, that is somehow also a comfortable everyday bike.
