Treasure Planet and Atlantis: The Lost Empire are my two favorite "forgotten" or "lost" Disney movies. They were both passion projects that dared to break the traditional "Disney movie" formula, and wound up at the bottom of the pile due to Disney failing to follow up on them because they were so different from what they traditionally do.

Captain Amelia was really inspiring to me as a kid because I think she was the first female character I'd seen that was a leader and everyone just accepted that she was the captain without her gender being a barrier. The pirates didn't turn against her because she was female, they just wanted the treasure. Like, her ability was never in question, she was strong and assertive and proud of herself, but also pretty and kind... and none of it got questioned. She didn't have to defend who she was. It meant so much to me as a kid.

To me, who grew up without a father and was raised by my grandfather, this hits home real hard. Treasure Planet is my favourite Disney movie. It taught me that father isn't the one who birthed you, it's the one who raised you. I learned a lot from my gramps. To me, he was my father, just like Silver was for Jim.
@Mika-ph6ku
@Mika-ph6ku Жыл бұрын
Being in a similar boat, I disagree with the reasoning a bit. Father by definition is the male parent of a child, so your father is the one who "assisted" in birthing you. I've come to make the same distinction you are making, but instead making it a distinction between the terms "father" and "dad." A father is just the man that impregnated your mother, he doesn't hold much significance in your life. Your dad is different though, he is the man that stepped in to raise you to be a strong man/woman yourself. Your father and your dad can be the same person, but can also be two different people. I've never met my father, but I love and respect my dad. Just the way I choose to look at it.

@@mjm3091 To be fair, if you clarify that any characters that are based on existing works aren't Disney protagonists, then about 95% of Disney's "protagonists" aren't Disney protagonists. The majority of their biggest properties are based on an existing book or fairy tale, with only a few exceptions. They generally only change a few story beats here and there, usually with the ending getting the most changes to make it happier. No idea why people feel the need to single this one out in the comments section more than the others, especially when it's arguable that they changed more here with it being set in space and featuring various aliens than they changed in the majority of their other works that are based on things.

The animation for this movie has to be one of my favorites from Disney, hands down. The movie is a mix of 2D hand-drawn animation AND 3D animation. Some parts I would say don’t work but it’s honestly incredible for the time what they were able to animate and really created such an incredible fictional Sci-fi world. An amazing example would be Silver himself is practically a literal cyborg because his animation is in pieces. His organic human body was 2D animated while his arm and leg machine attachments were 3D. Even when I rewatch it while I’m much older I cant tell the difference, they colored it so well to blend the two styles together. Still to this day my all time favorite Disney Movie

Still the best rendition of Treasure Island. Honestly though the biggest sin was Tony Jay as the opening narrator and then never hearing him again for the rest of the film.

The real sin is how Disney released this on the same day as Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. They initially planned this to release in April of that year but gave that release to Lilo and Stitch. The most expensive Traditionally Animated film became one of their biggest flops ever.
