I still remember whole plot lines from her era on the show, she & holly had the chops to pull off some wild storylines, & it def veered off into predictable soap operatics after that. And then the Big Bang Girl joined up… sharks were jumped lol… I remember bawling when Prue died, I had no idea it was coming, I don’t think I was that knocked over by a TV death until OITNB lost my favorite character.

I found it so funny and weird that after Prue died, suddenly there were just no photos of their dead sister in the house anywhere and when they did flashback episodes they only showed scenes with Prue as a dog or the back of her on a motorbike. It was just so out of place that the sisters wouldn't have pics of her anymore when they used to (especially the famous pic of the three of them together which was symbolic of their coming together again). It stuck out like a sore thumb and made it obvious there was some kind of issue there... either the producers or whoever makes those decisions just wanted to remove her likeness completely out of fear of having to pay for it or out of spite. Or Shannon's team didn't give permission for her likeness to ever turn up in any episode ever again.

Piper became a heinous fish wife that constantly avoided her witchly duties and mistreated Leo in the later seasons. She was nothing but a cranky housewife who didn't want to save innocents anymore, very annoying progression.

As much as people credit Shannen leaving for the decline in quality (and her leaving did definitely hurt) I do truly believe Constance leaving as showrunner and that hack Brad Kern taking over hurt the show a million times more. The quality declined so much, and by the fifth season, so many episodes just become about "what outrageous and skimpy outfits/costume can we get the girls in now!" Especially Phoebe, her character just became a black hole of skimpy outfits and bland love interests. It was painful to watch. I wish we'd had a chance to see what Constance would've done if she'd stayed on - so much of the sisterhood aspect was lost when she was gone and it's just a shame.

The first four seasons really were so solid - regardless of all the drama, they did put out four seasons they should be proud of.

Contrary to popular belief, the outfits were looking that way since late season 1. ex: in “the power of two” Prue is wearing a shirt that is leaving little to the imagination. they clearly weren’t wearing any bras either as the show went on. And as much flack as the later seasons get for continuity errors there’s just as much in the earlier seasons. Overall, I love this show through the good, the bad, the ugly.

Yes I totally agree, I know I kept talking about the mermaid episode but I really think that was the absolute tipping point of the show. After Paige’s introduction Constance was only consulting for season four so it’s drops a bit in quality, but the mermaid was her completely removed. I wonder where the show would have gone. I’ve never seen her do many (any?) interviews after leaving the show. I’m sure she was upset by what happened as she based the sisters on her own sisters. Thanks for watching!

@@aaliyahlovato Though with Prue, I believe they were trying to embody her slow liberation and becoming (for lack of a better term) less uptight. It did somewhat reflect character development and personality, which can often show through wardrobe. Holly spoke how even hairstyles and such were extremely important to the producer Aaron Spelling, as he says it helps to identify a character. She thought it was ridiculous but sort of grew to understand it. On the other hand, Phoebe's outfits often had to do with ridiculous costumes (or lack thereof, naked or nearly naked) and it seemed a cheap and unnecessary ploy when it happened again and again. The costumes became skimpier over time compared to earlier seasons. Alyssa Milano herself said in an interview that it was done to draw viewers and ratings.

It wasn’t really for the “male gaze” as it was just them pulling things out of their bum to keep the show alive via outrageousness stunts. (IE: the cosplay BS) While massaging big egos with money, which is also why the show became ridiculously cheap with beyond lazy riding. I also agree that the first three seasons were the best for the show.

One thing i always noticed is that Holly Marie Combs NEVER subscribed or give in to the skimpy outfits. If you really pay attention to it you will see she is ALWAYS dressed more "conservatively", more covered, more "adult", etc... I noticed this even when i was younger and the show was still on air and it always stood out to me. Like Piper was ALWAYS the more practical, down to earth, relatable one.

I kept watching, mostly because I still liked the premise, but it got to be so ridiculous with the demon love interest just dragging on and on, then the angel love interest dragging on, and even the actresses started looking apathetic is some scenes when using their magic. It was rather ridiculous that Milano's character became this kick@$$ girl boss, too. After awhile, I just...didn't care about the characters and storyline anymore and stopped watching. I think the only series from the WB that I watched all the way thru was Smallville & Buffy. I caught the ending of Angel but only because Spike joined the show.

That’s because that was part of Phoebe’s appeal. She was sensual, free spirited, feminine, and wild. Pretty much a fashionable cool girl with street smarts. No different from Fran Fine in “The Nanny”. This was the early 2000’s and each of the girls were progressive in their own ways. Phoebe was just the hyperfeminine one who could kick ass which was the thing that drew me into the show.

22-26 episodes per season used to be the norm for most shows. It's only in recent history they've cut that down to 6-10, which is just horrendous. Charmed, Buffy, The X Files, Hercules, Xena, CSI, etc. All had at least 22 episodes per year. And you could go back to the 70s and 80s and see the same. MASH, The Jeffersons, The Golden Girls, Three's Company, etc. This shortened season trend is very recent. My dream Charmed scenario would be Alyssa and Brad leaving at the end of season 3, Constance and Shannen staying, and Rose/Paige coming in as Alyssa's/Phoebe's replacement.

The 6-8 episode per season nowadays is due to streaming since their business model is different. Without commercials (product placements don't count) there are limited ways to earn aside from subscriber fees.

I think part of why the general audience thought shannon may have been the problem is cuz their character started the series with a grudge against Phoebe. She plays brooding, deep emotions really well whereas Alyssa was playing up the free-spirit fun character with Holly being the mediator. As the audience, we often apply their character traits to the real human actor. Like with Topher Grace. I ALWAYS thought he kinda suked because I couldnt stand Eric but had a crush on Hyde. Shannen also had a bad reputation from 90210, where she had already been pitted against Jenny Garth. I remember that even before Charmed started and her name was put forward, people expected her to be a diva and unsufferable. So yes, when her character turned out to be the "buzzkill" sister, a lot of people (me included) made the bad mental connection that she was probably "the" problem actress on this set. The interesting thing is that we always try to find one culprit, when more often than not, it's a generalized toxic environment.

I believe both had their "drama" moments, but I do have to say Shannen had prior similar issues while for Alyssa I haven't heard anything like this before or after Charmed. Also regarding the money she was demanding and the wardrobe and such if a different actress would do the same in today's day and age she'd be seen as strong and independent and demanding what she is due. Funny how easily perceptions can be manipulated.

Big fan of Rose's film work...but I preferred Shannen Doherty on the show. I don't like Charmed past mid season 5. It just felt so light and silly and I really enjoyed the darker aspects of season 3 and 4. Continuity has always been an issue in the Charmed world but they threw so much out of the door after Prue died.

The biggest is, when Shannon Doherty was let go, the tabloids in France said it was because she was drinking on set and they were forced to fired her. I was a child but I remember everyone said that. I want to put my experience here, I'm Latin American, meaning I watched Charmed dubbed in Spanish in mid to late 00's and I was a teenager. I didn't know anything about the cast, to me all of them were strangers, so it crushed my heart when Prue died. To me there was no context (this was before I had access to internet) as to why they killed Prue, it was hard to accept but years later when I found out the reason I made peace with the fact that actors are not their characters, everything can be faked.

I'll always be grateful for the first three seasons of Charmed. I was eleven when I discovered the show and wanted sisters so badly! I always imagined Charmed is what my life would be like if I had them! Like we'd all live in a giant fancy house with a chandelier that would flicker ominously whenever Serious Shit was about to go down! We'd argue, run nightclubs, and blow up demons together by reciting bad poetry XD I'm so glad I didn't know about any of the behind the scenes drama back then. It was sad enough watching the show go downhill. I feel bad saying that, because I swear I still love Paige. I thought they did a great job incorporating her, even though I hated Prue's absence. But the constant skimpy-outfit-of-the-week got so freaking old and none of the heart was there anymore. But at least those first three seasons were my life goals back in the day, hahaha. And nowadays I find all of the behind the scenes stuff so interesting!

Shannen talked on her podcast about the reason she was fired from 90210. She was married to an abusive drug addict. Because of that she would often be late on set. She didn't tell anyone not even her costars who she was really close. After that firing she was very hesitant to do charmed because it was Aaron Spelling again. I'm surprised that you didn't mention the guest appearance that Holly and Alyssa did in Grey's anatomy playing sisters again. As much as I liked Rose McGowan as Paige the show’s quality really deteriorated after Shannen left. Every storyline started to revolve around the sisters love lives and pretty much put men at the centre of every storyline, which wasn’t really the point of the show. Plus, it became way too much about Phoebe and they kept recycling plots. Like, every time one of the sisters was running from their emotions they turned into a mythical creature. It got very boring.

charmed was (and still is) one of my fav shows of all time. Piper and Prue were always my favorites and while Paige was cool, i always wonder what could’ve been has Shannen got to be on longer. when i rewatch it always feels too fast when she dies. It sounds to me like there was a lot of toxicity from the crew, as well as the toxicity between cast members so it feels really disingenuous to say that either Shannen or Alyssa were solely the problem, or even to say that together they were the sole problem. It seems like there was a lot of behind the scenes goings on in terms of playing with characters relationships to wind up cast members etc from the crew was a big part in a lot of things and I seem to recall someone saying something about how Alyssa wasn’t happy about Prue being pushed as the very central character in the earlier seasons which didn’t help, but as was also pointed out, there was a lot of that for Phoebe’s character after Shannen was gone and Alyssa seemed okay with that, so who knows. I also feel that they did Phoebe’s character dirty in the end. They went in with this family feud type story where Phoebe was considered almost “the problem child” type for having gone against the grain and not finishing education/college and moving away and flipping from job to job until she comes home in a time of need and they bond over discovering their heritage essentially rather than just from being forced to live together again, and Phoebe grows as a person and as a sister and they all three grow as sisters, just for Phoebe to end the show looking a bit shallow and self centred in the sense that she’s putting her journey to find love and have the baby she saw in her vision before everything to the point of almost looking desperate, and it doesn’t strike me as something she would have done in the earlier years. I know this is a character on a screen and I know people often change their path in life and the person they are can change with it, but as a story of someone redeeming themselves it didn’t feel right. All this stuff about Brad Kern that’s said in this video being more skimpy outfit and love life drama concerned makes that make more sense to me now. It left the last season come to quite the anticlimactic end, but thankfully the way they show the last section of the last episode where they age, makes it still a nice end to it. It has a good feeling about the ending because you see the happy ending for them and see grandma Piper and grandpa Leo at the end with their grandkids reading the Book of Shadows. At the end of the day, for all the troubles they had on and off screen, they all did very well to make a show for so long that so many people loved. Thats my take on it all anyway.

I always preferred the Prue series and just realising why. It was about them and their relationship all the time instead of them dressing up and testing their relationship all the time. I grew up watching Charmed and I absolutely loved the show before Prue's exit. I still watched the other seasons but they just didn't capture the same magic (haha) as the Prue seasons. Now I know why! If there is a Charmed marathon going on, I can only watch up to Prue's exit. I also used to love the chemistry between Phoebe and Cole and now I am seeing that relationship in a whole new light given Shannon's relationship with Cole's actor behind the scenes. I loved watching Charmed. However, I kind of got uninterested when they included Billie (Kaley) because it got kind of confusing after that.

Yea after season 2 and most of 3, it became less about witchcraft and more about special effects. I really liked the first 3 seasons. I love it all but the first few season particularly the first really focused on the witchcraft and the lore of it. Also Julian McMahon.....ooosh what a man.

Everyone was dating everyone else. That's just ASKING for drama. I will say one thing- I distinctly remember how, after Ted King was written off in the 1st season finale, the blame was put squarely on Shannon.

Please do Supernatural! I know there's some dark dirt there. Also I will always hate that they got rid of Shannon. I really liked the first couple seasons of Charmed but it just didn't hit like it used to as the years went on. It's one reason why I've never gone back to do a watchthrough years later

Mark L. Is so evil for what he does. It's all exploiting the poor ppl and sometimes , when I watched it yrs ago, the ppl would ask you're still paying me $20 right? That broke my heart. He's made millions off the backs of the bruised. She should def cover him and make some $$ off his buffoonery.

Thank you for your deep dive into Charmed. Too many of the other deep dives tend to use Shannen as the villain of it all because of her 90210 firing when there’s really more to the story than just Shannen being difficult.
