Although I have met a few celebrities though conventions, screenings and work I have avoided 'hero worship', guess I had been afraid of being disappointed [many actors I had met are just plain weird]. Only celebrity I had ever bothered to ask for an autograph is 'Cynthia Rothrock', not the best actress but highly regarded as a legend of female martial arts films, and whom came across as a wonderful person to me at the time. Great content as usual ‘Coffee and Cults’.

You will find that all parties share some measure of responsibility. Whedon had issues, and a dark side. Hollywood fed that i to a monster. And o the Hollywood scale of things, he is a nothing burger. Plenty of nasty, dark types going about that we have no awareness of. Whedon got exposed, because his power weakened, and was targeted and scapegoated. He still had horrible behaviour, but hardly the worst out there. All of this is just the tip of the iceberg. Call me biased, but there should be no statute of limitations on child sexual abuse. Like there’s none on murder. Because it *is* murder. It happened to me when I was 3, and it broke me. I did not survive it. And because I was pre-reason, pre-language, there is no reaching this broken child inside me-so I will never survive it. Sixty years later, I am still broken. No Statute Of Limitations Murderer.

Survivors are often unable to speak of their abuse until many years later. It is my opinion that once again, the law is created to benefit the perpetrators. While the statute of limitations is being challenged and has even changed in many states and provinces, it never should have applied in the first place.

Well said to the original post and to the first comment as well ! Thank you both for addressing this exceedingly important situation!! I could not agree more, and I too have experienced this myself as well as having been a witness to the devastating results that this abuse has had on the lives of so many other survivors of a crime that I consider to be a murder of a child’s spirit and certainly no less evil than any other murder of a body ! There should be NO such thing as a “statute of limitations” when it comes to sexual abuse of children !! There is no limitation at all to the number of years that sexually abused children suffer from this ! They suffer for the rest of their lives!

No one was willing to listen until the "Me Too" movement. Joss not only completely murdered Cordelia's personality (and then put her into a coma), but he also waited until *after* the 2003 Autumn season *started* to let Charisma know she was fired from Angel. By that point, Charisma was in the middle of a divorce and was scrambling to find work to support herself, her baby, and her (at the time) husband.

With all of the scandals surrounding certain men involved with Buffy, I’m so glad that I’ve only ever heard good things about Anthony Head. It would break my heart if he turned out to be problematic. I’ve heard loads of stories from people who’ve met him about what a great person he is, but my favourite anecdote is from Jay Hulme, a transgender poet from the UK. Jay’s a huge Buffy fan, and he’d been to several conventions before he transitioned and met many of the cast members and got their autographs. Most of his signed memorabilia included his deadname, so he wrote to Anthony Head and asked if he could send him some signed photos made out to his new name. Jay also mentioned in his email that he had a difficult family life especially since transitioning, and that Buffy was his comfort show. Instead of sending him new photos, Anthony invited Jay to spend the day on his farm with him and his wife. His wife took photos of them and printed them onto glossy paper for Anthony to sign. This happened over a decade ago, and Jay and Anthony are still in contact, and Anthony wrote a quote for one of Jay’s poetry books. It’s such a lovely story. Anthony and his wife seem like wonderful people.

The story about Joss Whedon killing off Charisma Carpenter’s character after she became pregnant reminded me of what Bill Cosby did to Lisa Bonet. He wrote her out of A Different World (which began as a Cosby Show spin-off centring around Denise going to college) when she became pregnant with Zoe. Her character was unmarried, and he said he thought it would be a bad look for the show. He also wasn’t happy that she filmed a s3x scene in the movie Angel Heart, and she posed topless for a magazine. Then not long after she returned to The Cosby Show a couple of years later, he fired her citing “creative differences”. This seems to be a pattern with creepy male show runners and directors. It’s all about control.

Allison ran a personal blog while she was on the show, where she posted poetry and talked about her life. She would engage with her fans there. I spoke to her a couple of times myself. I never saw her post about the cult there, but it was really clear that she was a soulful but lonely person. There was a real sense of melancholy about her. Keith targeted her, victimized her, and then shaped her into a fellow abuser. She has to take responsibility for her role in the cult, but it's still really sad to see how she was targeted and converted into this nightmare.

this imo(i commented on someone elses post in length so i wont here) is "most" of the younger or child stars today.. i dont think much of it was their doing or even with their knowledge to some extent.. MK ultra is real, and we are all in some way mind controlled but they are literally not themselves for most of their young lives, and many in their adult lives as well.. this is why we see the britneys, bynes, and the likes "going crazy" if you have any interest, there was a guy named Fritz Springmaier who wrote a book or two on it as well as has helped victims of mind control and SRA for years, split personalities from abuse is an evil evil thing.. grooming leads to all of it.

My husband is a therapist who specializes in something called (if I've gotten it right) dialectical behavioral therapy where "both things can be true"- NB is a deeply troubled person who was harmed as a child and now struggles with rage and substance abuse- and is also a kind, charming dude when he's his best self. Nothing is ever black and white, it's not an either/or situation, and I'm so glad that was presented here.

Charmed was a great show when Shannon was on it. While Rose McGowan was good in her role, it seemed like such a stretch to have a fourth sister suddenly come out of the woodwork in order to have the show limp along. And the writing started to go downhill as well. Like having Brian Krause's character be frozen in carbonite during Season 8 because his death was supposed to tip the balance to fight off "the Triad". Went hand-in-hand with the plummeting quality of the special effects too. By the end the "demons" were just humans.

The pointless expansion of the "magical world" was like they were trying to cram Charmed into the world of Harry Potter or something with expanding to Curpids, dwarves, etc. Granted they had started that prior a bit with the fairy/troll episode, but they completely threw out the formula that worked for Seasons 1 & 2.

Huge Scooby Gang fan (Buffy) here and friend of a post convention host. My friend created a convention, since he worked in the industry and had many celebrity clients he could just schedule to do his con. It was a general convention that had fans and guests from sci-fi shows, cartoons, live TV shows, comics, anime, everything really. My brother and the host were really good friends, my brother and I were in a cosplay group, and thus this friend asked us (our whole cosplay group) to host the cosplay competition for the con. We had a pretty well known cosplayer on the pannel (also a friend), a voice actor, and a live actor. Now when we heard that Nicholas Brendon was gonna be a guest judge we all flipped out and were super excited. Both the celebrity guest judges were a tad late, while one was humble and super apologetic, the other just blew it off and acted as if he was too good to be there in the first place. His eyes were red and puffy, smelled of alcohol, he used unnecessarily vulger language in a competition that had small children competing in, and he had this overall air of suppiriority. Now I didn't know that many famous live actors (I only had spoken to voice actors) so there was that question on if that's just how they were... But then you get to the other guest judge we had, one of the most famous voice actors (in my opinion) today. I didn't realize who he was until after I met him, his name and face really meant nothing to me, but then two competitors came up on the stage dressed as Darkwing Duck and Morgana Macawber. Out of no where this guy I really didn't make a connection with took the mic and started doing the Darkwing Duck mololog... Because he was Jim Cummings, the voice actor for Darkwing Duck. The entire room went crazy. At the end, Nicholas Brendon sort of huffed off, while Jim Cummins stayed behind to talk to the competitors, and us, the hosts. He did a few pictures, hand shakes, and a few autographs. I was looking forward to meeting Nicholas Brendon and was gobsmacked at how much of an ass he was (I believe the next week after this con or soon after it, he was arrested and we all just rolled our eyes at that point). It took me a long time to be able to enjoy watching Buffy again, I realized it is okay for me to still enjoy it, as long as I am aware of the truth. On the other hand I was ignorant a the time of the name Jim Cummings and wish I had realized sooner how much of an idol I was meeting. I still hate myself for being such an idiot. You live and you learn. I now take great care to learn about my favorite voice actors so I never make this mistake again. I have no evidence, I honestly don't even remember what year it was, probably early 2010s, I'm sure if I asked my brother he'd remember. Not overly important though, just another random person's personal account of how much of a dick Nicholas Brendon is to meet in person.

I loved this video. I was able to meet Nicky a few years ago in Orlando for one of his bowling meet n greets. I will honestly say, he was an absolute delight. There were maybe 7-10 of us there, we bowled, he bought us all food, and gave the absolute best hugs I've ever gotten from anyone ever. Lol, it's like he hugged you with his whole being.. We have pics together, and I wasn't aware at the time of ALL the issues he had. He had only a few beers but never got drunk. At one point we were all outside having a break, I rang my mom to tell her what I was up to, (yup, a 30 something still thrilled that I was hanging out with Xander, and my mom adored his character.). Nicky looked up at me, and I lipped, "it's my Mom." And the next thing I know, the man is having a hilarious conversation with my mom. She's no longer with us, but that absolutely gave her a memory she cherished. And I cherish that moment as well. His girlfriend (I think it may have been Sara) was delightful. She seemed a little like she was walking on eggshells now looking back, but she was wonderful. He signed autographs for us all, ( mine even mentions my mom,) he took tons of photos with us, wasn't shy about talking about some of his issues (so I'd hoped he was on the up and up,) and left us all wanting to hang with him again. I tuned into his fireside live videos and loved blhis art, and will still pray for the guy. He definitely needs some solid extended rehab time. My heart to anyone who ever was harmed by him and his actions. I'll hold those positive memories dear to my heart, but I will also stand with the victims. I hope he gets help. 🙏

It takes a few hours for them to all populate, but if you check back about four to six hours after the release, the Portuguese subtitles will be there! If you look at the video screen, in the bottom right there is a little gear, hit subtitles, then hit ENGLISH (AUTOGENERATED) I know that sounds wrong but trust me. Then close that little gear, reopen it again, hit subtitles again, then a new option should have populated "Auto Translate", hit that & it will bring you to a long list of languages, select the language you want & your wife should be able to watch! The fanbase always put Joss Whedon on too high of a pedestal, ignoring the fact that it was a team effort that made his shows amazing. Buffy had many amazing writers, and an excellent cast. Sure, Joss played a role in all that. He convinced the WB to resurrect a cheesy 90’s movie. He had an excellent eye for talent too. And as a storyteller, some of his arcs were genius, some were meh. But yes, he deserves some credit. But I never thought it was fair that the fanbase acted like he deserved 99% credit. I definitely think it went to his head. From the sound of it, the more famous he got, the worse of a person he became.

@@terminatrix92 But it’s debatable which is which. Nicholas Brendan is mentally ill and has a serious substance abuse problem. Substance issues can completely change a person. Not saying he should be at conventions, where he can draw unsuspecting fans into his blackhole, but he needs serious help. Joss, on the other hand, has no excuse for his bad behavior. Keep in mind that psychological abuse can be nearly as bad as physical abuse. Joss created a toxic environment, and it’s even possible that this may have contributed to Nicky’s trauma.

@@markx1126 but by that logic Joss Whedon does have an excuse: he found his dead friend in a pond when he was a child. It fuelled the darkness in his work apparently. His parents also forced all his siblings to be creatives as children, at least according to him. I’m not excusing his behaviour but Whedon has as much reason to be screwed up as anyone. The difference for me is Whedon literally has never been accused of a crime. Inappropriate and unprofessional behaviour yes; whilst creating some of the most beloved art of a generation… he should have been fired but clearly Whedon made an already toxic environment worse, rather than being solely responsible for it. If someone comes forward with a direct SA allegation or another abuse that would be definitive but the man was essentially cancelled for the same reason Michael Scott is a terrible boss on the office whilst Brendan literally attacked people

One quick note: When Whedon took over Justice League because of the tragic death in Zack Snyder's family, he didn't decide to change the script and reshoot. The studio was already unhappy with how DC films were not as popular as the Marvel Cinematic Universe and decided to hire Whedon to make the movies more comedic and light-hearted. In other words they wanted the film to be like a Marvel movie. The studio wanted this. Joss did what they wanted. Now, that does not excuse his bad behavior during production at all. I am just making this one point clear.

His name is Nicholas Brendon, Xander is a Buffy character. And yes his problems are probably "boosted" by atmosphere in Buffy plan. Imagine being a victim of sexual assault and being forced to play it - and yes it was season 3, him and Eliza Dushku (who's also a victim of that)... and that was a time when nobody ask actor "hey you wanna play this?". You just play...

@@IwonaKlich Not just Season 3. There has an episode in Season 1 or Season 2 involving his character Xander getting nearly forced into deadly breeding with a monster, had his friends not intervened at time. The epilogue of the episode did simply brush it off as comedical, but when I was watching it on DVD by 2015, I wasn't having it. I could tell that the actor felt uncomfortable and genuinely upset for the entire duration of this scene.

How Shannen getting fired was Alyssa's fault? Don't come at me with the ultimatum because a huge network and production company would not fall for that. Holly and Shannen clearly stated that they did not want to talk to the mediator the wb brought in, meaning they did not want to resolve things. I'm not saying Alyssa's an angel, but none of them were. If you really look at it unbiased you'll see all three of them were the problem. Shannen being jealous of Alyssa's growing popularity, Alyssa's need to be in a competion with Shannen and Holly flip flopping like she always has (in my opinion she's the meanest one)

The media narrative that Shannen had a history of being difficult to work with was the studio's excuse to let her go. Alyssa had them by the balls. If they fired her, she would have sued them. The really unfortunate thing is that, in the case of Charmed, I feel like Doherty, Combs and Milano would have had the power to negotiate as a team, as losing one of them from the cast would not have been as ideal or easily handled as other shows. With the Friends situation still pretty new (having happened for the third season of Friends in 1996), I would not be surprised if there were strings being pulled to ensure that the three ladies of Charmed had an amount of jealously and animosity that would prevent such a negotiation from happening.

“On the surface, Hollywood looks like the perfect place…” Does it? I remember terrifying hordes of entitled paparazzi invading people’s privacy, unsubstantiated and cruel stories plastered across the covers of magazines at the checkout line, young kids panicking to appropriately answer the impromptu questions of adults in televised interviews, actual news taking a backseat to announce that an individual was seen doing something utterly mundane, and a lot of unwarranted humiliation and unchecked egotism. All because they were famous celebrities. As a creative person and artist, I always loved and appreciated acting and music. But I loathe the fame that accompanies being a successful performer. The _work_ is what should be famous, not the artist’s personal/private life. The artist, of course, should be credited and compensated for their work, but I never understood the need to parade and exploit them. Hollywood-the real Hollywood, not the idealized idea of Hollywood-never seemed all that glamorous to me. It’s rust that’s been gilded in fool’s gold.

Obviously, the average person is not aware of the sex trafficking, the cults, the murders, the abuse, and other heinous crimes that are part of the ENTIRE entertainment industry. So yeah, the entertainment industry does look glamorous. Finally, a lot of the behind the scenes drama on shows, the Clive Davis & P. The difference is Marlon Brando, Val Kilmer and Russell Crowe have reputations for being assholes because they have, on more than one occasion, acted like giant assholes during filming. They're labeled difficult to work with because they actually were difficult, loud, egotistical, and impatient. That all makes a person difficult. Cavil and Topher Grace got that reputation for reasons most women get that reputation: by just having boundaries that they stand by. They didn't throw tantrums, they weren't divas, they didn't cuss out the crew or directors or refuse to learn their lines, like other actually difficult actors have done.

Such a shame. It's interesting how meaningful the art can be even though the artists are so fallible. Thanks for spilling the tea with us!
