This talk will be considering society’s use of drugs and why, throughout history, mankind has consistently turned to them. This will then lead to whether we should replace alcohol as the main recreational drug of use with MDMA (ecstasy).
Rhal Ssan is in his final year studying Philosophy, Politics and Economics. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

From a societal perspective, we need to accept that drug use is a personal choice that governments can't control in any free and open society. From an individual perspective, we need to accept that drugs in any form are extremely harmful if not taken in extreme moderation. Instead of brainwashing kids into believing drugs are always bad, we need to be teaching them the arts of self control, self awareness, and delaying gratification.

Yeah, that’s WOULD be nice but unfortunately human biology can be pretty damn unforgiving with even the smallest of doses of certain drugs. If addiction was beat so easily with self control then why are we having a obesity epidemic. Sorry but while I agree that legislation shouldn’t be the first option sometimes it’s the best option.

Don't know about LSD being safe, but psilocybin mushrooms and peyote may be the only completely naturally occurring drugs on earth, that don't require any cultivation, preparation, etc. on our parts. Even marijuana, which everyone thinks of being the most natural drug on earth, isn't psychoactive in its naturally occurring, wild form.

I have never seen someone stoned on weed, coke, shrooms, or any other illegal/recreational beat or violate anyone....alcohol, I've seen and experienced violent drunks to often. I myself spent a month in a coma, 6 months in a hospital, a month in a rehab hospital and 5 years of mental and physical therapy because I was hit by a drunk driver. He and his companion died.

This guy is handsome, intelligent, polished appearance, and well spoken. These are the types of people we need speaking about this subject. When you have someone who dresses and looks like a bum he/she loses all credibility because that is the image associated with drug users. Recreational drug use is ok but abuse is bad. Most addicts have emotional personalities and seek instant gratification. They lack discipline. How can we teach drug attics addicts discipline?

I’m surprised that people think drugs are bad or harmful or the cause of addiction. They aren’t. There is nothing endogenous about drugs that causes addiction. Addiction is the result of a combination of things: mental illness, poverty, child abuse, and the response is adding drugs to untreated mental illness with limited resources causes “addiction.” But this is rare compared to the benefits. It is sad that people think drugs are bad when in really they are good for you. No one should be forced to take drugs but adults should be allowed to control their consciousness; right now we live in a totalitarian legal system where the US government says citizens do not have a right to their minds, the government controls it, but people seem to find this be fine.

@@JohnMcSayer Sugar indeed causes levels of dopamine and serotonine to raise, it tricks you with it's taste, sweet taste is just one that people recognize as 'full of pleasure' (you can google why, taste isn't any information about wheter substance is good for you or not), so in fact - it's drug like any other. Therefore you may get addicted to it, when you eat it in large, unnatural quantities (drinking Cola often will do). Fun part is, that it's physically doing only harm to you and gives you just a sweet taste, so it's one of the worst drugs in the world for sure. Also a fun thing is, that legal drugs are the one, that destroys most people. People should change their mind about what drugs are as soon as it's possible

I'm sorry, but I really can't take your comment seriously. Of course he knows a lot about drugs. You've replied stating that you are knowledgeable about this, but my question to you would be... Why aren't you giving a Ted Talk about drugs? It just feels like you're being that heckler in the third row. I have no qualms in admitting that you know a lot more about drugs than a lot of people. Although, it's abundantly clear to me that you think pharmaceutical related things make you a drug expert, when actually, it makes you an expert in that particular field.
