I have tried a variety of different kinds of pellets without much success. I personally prefer the organic, cold-pressed pellets like TOPS, but my birds do not seem to eat many of them. Like you, I feed my birds a wide variety of chopped vegetables and sprouted seeds in addition to their pellets and a high quality seed mix. My linnie is a big veggie and fruit eater, but I've never been able to convert her to pellets. She is now 12 and 1/2 years old, which is old for a linnie, so it appears her fresh foods diet has not harmed her. Thank you for a great video -- very informative and well-balanced!

I use Harrisson. My budgies prefer seeds than vegetables or sprout (except salad, leaves, spinards, etc). So I use some human consumption seeds ,commercial seeds for birds , insects and seeds that I grow in my garden.

@@M00Naturethanks for the input. It's nice to here about your linnie. I had many linnies and their average lifespan was around 10, however I still have one that will be 15 in 4 months.

@@melissacourchesne2121Isn't it fun and rewarding to grow your own food for your bird's? I love it and can't wait until it's warm enough to start planting again

I am always impressed with your science research. Your vids are exceptionally well done and offer current info. Truthfully, if info was cannon 10 years ago, it is likely now old news as there was almost no research on birds, and what there was focused on chickens. This is changing and many myths are exploding. As a fellow bird nerd, I can suggest a podcast called ‘Avian Behavior Podcast with Hillary Hinkey, a Certified Trainer, as she does 3 pods interviewing Dr. Scott Nichols, previously Lefever’s Avian Vet of the Year a specialist in avian nutrition. He discusses food, health, pellets, supplements etc. His approach is down to earth & research based. We are currently finally admitting that we have only an inexact understanding of ‘birds in the wild’ & what they eat. Toucans in captivity are dying of diabetes because our huge, sweet-bred fruit bears almost no relationship to wild forest fruit. A wild orange is inedible to us. I feed: fresh organic chop, at least 8 veg a day for breakfast with human organic flax, hemp and chia for omega’s sprinkled and topped with organic sprouts, organic cold-pressed pellets (Harrison’s & Tops) for dinner and have added lunch - Mikey & Mia’s Mix which is seeds, freeze dried vegetables incl pumpkin, carrots, beets, beans, flowers, kale, broccoli etc., flowers, pollen ++. Freeze dried whole foods. I am always impressed with you careful level of care! And such fun to visit your varied pet squad!!

Thank you for the information. I will look into that podcast. Hopefully we will all know how to feed our birds better. I remember having budgies as a child and all they ate was seeds, nothing else. They didn't live long.

Very good info. You are right on with explaining that pellets are processed food; I found that pellets can spoil quickly so I never buy large bags. My budgies never really appreciated them either; very finicky; so I'm glad that they eat fresh veggies and sprouts, since they love seeds.

I feed my birds 2 different pellets so that they are used to more than 1. I feed the mini roudybush and the zupreem natural color pellets. My birds love fresh food, veggies, sprouts, freeze-dried chop, I feed them birdstreet bistro too. Not too much they wont eat if I give it to them. I dont give them millet, though. Instead, I give them biobirds, china, prairie. They all run to their dishes for that, it smells so good too!

love your channel, very informative!.. would you be able to talk about feeding birds inserts like meal worms etc? I know it is full of protein and fibre... love to hear your comment on it.

Great topic! Birds can eat bugs and mealworms, however I haven't fed my birds any live bugs.I have fed some of my birds a commercial dry food with dried up bugs. I may consider making a video about it, thanks for the idea.

My budgies eat Tops mini pellets but they still prefer seeds. They also eat romaine lettuce, carrots, parsley, corn and hard boiled eggs. They are a bit picky and sometimes refuse their fresh food. Thanks Donna

I do feed my budgies some fresh food along with their pellets (Harrisons). Spinach, Bok Choy, Snap Peas and Bell Pepper they seem to like. They get seeds more so as a treat. I am always nervous to branch out to other fresh foods because I want to be 1000% sure they are organic/not treated with pesticides. My pigeon gets a mix of Harrisons and Dove Seed Mix. I am unsure what kinds of fresh foods he would like or try! I attempt to give him lentils but he has no interest.

I dont feed my Budgies pellets at all, as I personally didnt want to risk/waste money paying 30-40 bucks a bag for pellets that they might not eat and well budgies need seeds in their diet so mine get seeds at night then a chop with a little bit of seeds with added flaxseed and bee pollen in the morning as their diet and like their feathers are bright kinda shiny, they are looking great compared to what they did so I will keep going with what im doing, but when I get another bird that might be a large one I will be using pellets along with a chop for them and then a homemade seed mix type thing.

I got a small job cleaning in cocktail room at Avian parrot rescue An old couple devoted their entire house for their rescue They have really big parrots as well The house has stale hard to describe smell They have cages with birds everywhere even inside most bathrooms Seems like there is no living space there besides the bedroom but even there they have 3 cages Cockatiels room is basically a sun room and birds are out all day but it’s so extremely dusty, everything covered in poop and cages haven’t been properly cleaned for years , unused cages have debris growing and just hanging like ornaments The don’t feed fresh fruit or vegetables, pellets and seeds only Majority of birds missing feathers but still active but one has no tail feathers and looks very sad and scared locked up in a cage I just started to learn about parakeets but even without knowledge I can tell the environment the birds are living in is far from recommended It’s very sad 😞

Hi, you can feed it if it hasn't been sprayed with chemicals. Give them a good rinse. Also if you have the bird flu near you hold off.
