That's exactly what I wanted to hear. Consistency. I stopped working out a year ago. I became so fat that I can't even do 15 pushups in a row. A year ago, I was able to do 30+ slow pushups with proper form. I often think about what my body would look like if I had worked out for atleast 30 minutes a day and it makes me very sad that I became too lazy. I realized that there's no point in worrying. So, 2 weeks ago, I started working out again. Like you, I don't want to be big. I want to be lighter, stronger and faster.

i think that not being dogmatic is the most important thing, if someone wants extra variety in their training more power to them, if someone wants to train the bare minimum good for them. recognizing that different people have different goals, different training modalities they enjoy, and different levels of access to equipment is something the fitness industry is in desparte need of realizing

That right here is THE comment everybody needs to read AND to reflect on. I started calisthenics in the beginning of 2020 and realized I lost a good amount of size and got fatter with Fullbody Training. (I only did FB training on the first 3 months of my weightlifting career) - I read so many science papers, watched so many science Bro Lifters and lost literally everything. The only thing you should listen to is your intuition, your body and your mind.

Yep. Trial and error usually helps to find what works best. Like the legend Bruce Lee said (paraphrasing) take what works and discard the rest. He constantly tried new things and changed things with a hybrid approach to training. Now, none of us need to be that extreme, but he proved anything was possible with his mixed modalities.

Thank you for all your videos, and making them available for free. Your approach is so obtainable compared to hour-long workouts in a gym, with heavy weights. Inspired by you I just go to the park, and do a bodyweight workout on the ground, some dip bars and pullup bars. Thank you for making working out feel accessible.

I've been following you and your channel for over a year. I have adopted your training philosophy on maintaining a routine of daily physical hygiene. With just push ups, pull exercises, and leg exercises, I feel a lot stronger, healthier, and mentally tougher, especially as a man in his mid-thirties and recognizing that I am getting older and with more time consuming responsibilities. I can squeeze in training in the morning before I tackle a long workday. I have added a weight vest, rings, and a doorway pull up bar to create a home gym of sorts. I still lift weighs occasionally, but enjoy being able to train virtually every day in the comfort of my own home. Thank you, K boges.

So the basic principle would be 3 sets close to failure x 3 exercises (legs, push, pull) everyday? So 9 sets per workout total?
@michaeltallsman2740
@michaeltallsman2740 Жыл бұрын
@@kamilrekosz7829 It depends, but that's about right. But I do 2 sets of each exercise close to failure each day for a weekly total of 14 hard sets per movement pattern. I did 3 sets each day before and it was too much for me (I felt too beat up). I am going to work my way to 3 sets per movement with time. I think the key is to set a weekly volume target for hard sets (sets taken near failure) and distribute that volume over the course of a week. For example, a goal of 15 hard sets a week but 3 sets (push, pull, legs) each day for 5 days of the week, with Saturday and Sunday off. Or, if starting out, 1 hard set each day of the week for a weekly total of 7 hard sets. From what I've learned from K Boges, we can be flexible with how we distribute the weekly volume of hard sets over the course of week. Also, depending on how frequent you train, it is good to use a few variety of movements so as to avoid overuse injuries. I cycle through a few exercises for each movement type. For push, I do narrow push ups, regular push ups, decline push ups, etc. For pull, chin up, rows. For legs, squats, lunges, deep knee bends.

The fitness industry is at a really interesting transition point right now. Hopefully everyone is less (or becoming less) obsessed with equipment (machines and free weights), less obsessed with looking like a gorilla, and more interested in fitness longevity. Kyle, for weight vests I would be interested in your take on what to look for: range of weights that you believe essential, other aspects like key areas of stitching or other aspects of how it's put together -- basically what to look for to get the best value for your money (these wt. vests are pricey).

Thank you, Laurencio! That is a huge compliment! It's going to depend on the context. So for an overweight beginner, he or she can make great muscular gains even in a calorie deficit. For a lean advanced athlete, a bulk is probably going to be necessary. Think of it like this... the more muscular and trained you are, the harder it is to build muscle, and the more you are going to benefit from a surplus.

Just wanted to say a big thank you! I train completely differently than I used to in the past thanks to you. I wake up in the morning and superset a push and a pull and then rest 7:00 minutes and repeat three times. During the rest periods I get ready for the morning. In the afternoon after work I’ll do a quad focused exercise one day and hamstring focused the next. I do this six days per week and I’ve been so consistent and would have never done something like this apart from stumbling upon your content. Twice a week I’ll do some side lateral raises and once per week I’ll do neck, calves, traps, abs, and forearms one set till failure or rest pause. I’m in the best shape of my life so thanks again! One of the coolest things with the higher rep training is that I don’t really need to warm up because the first few reps are the warm up. God bless.

Hi Kyle, you are a big inspiration in my fitness journey and I wanted to thank you. I have been following you for about 2 years and really admire your "fitness" philosophy and way of thinking in general. Since then my interest in muscle-functions, joints etc. has grown and it is very nice to understand how and which muscles work when exercising. These push and pull exercises really hit most if not all muscles of the upper body. But it always feels that we underprioritise leg training. Hip extension and knee extension are extensively covered with squat variations and unilateral movement like lunges. Although it seems that hip flexion and knee flexion are less likely to be explored with calisthenics. I know that L-sits and al sort of ab workouts include some hipflexion but never to it fullest potential (range of motion) and even though nordic curls target the kneeflexors, this movement is very technique demanding. Another question (or thought) I have, is the fact that we modern humans mainly train in the sagittal plain, but hardly in the frontal or axial plain. Especially for core stability and strength, where movement patterns like rotation and lateroflexion or anti-rotation and anti-lateroflexion are underdeveloped. I wanted to know your opinion on these topic and maybe some advice/guiding thoughts, because I think it would be valuable. Especially with great fitness figures like Ben Patrick, Ido Portal and Aaron Horschig who also gave me some great insight on muscle-function and their emphasis on training antagonistic muscles and stability for athletic abilities, but maybe more important for longevity and injury prevention. Thanks again and keep up the good work, best of luck! Hannes

Pretty much spot on. One can use rings or handles, since they both allow freedom of movement and variability. This means, if you have handles, don't go out and buy rings, both work. Especially, since nowadays, the only difference is the part your gripping on. I will say, the handles are more portable than rings, when traveling, and you don't have to learn false grip for pulling. As for all three products, if money is an issue, they can be made on the cheap. However, if time and skills are factors, a person can use cinder blocks for paralettes, or chairs, or any 2 things of similar height. A backpack, if packed with care, can work. Books wrapped with towels and no sliding inside will work. For the most part, just changing the angle, and/or going slower will make the exercises more intense will do everything needed.

I took a look at your website and I've seen that the personal consultations and custom programs are sold out...cool to see that you and your training concept are gaining more recognition. High-Frequency basic calisthenics is a great way to train and while I'm currently chasing strength goals that are further away from this style of training (adding weight to my heavy barbell compounds, weighted calisthenics, trying to learn and train the Olympic Lifts, etc.), I would honestly say that once I am older and maybe don't have that much time anymore because of family or job or anything like that, I could definitely see myself switching to this style of training because it's just so much more accessible, promotes and rewards desirable goals such as low body fat, balanced muscular aesthetic physique, work capacity and can be integrated more easily into a busier life (even though my dream still is to own a real legit home gym)

Resistance Bands IMO are #3 after a Pull-up Bar and Rings. It makes things accessible, like assisted Pull-ups, and can serve basically as a cable station for isolation movements. Sure, Band Pushdowns/Extensions/Curls/Facepulls/Good Mornings/Leg Curls are not going to make up the majority of your gains in the long-term, but getting in a little bit of isolation exercises can boost your look, and keep your physique and strength balanced.

I feel like I'm echoing a lot of people here, but I really appreciate your videos, they always seem to come out at the right time and they're always full of knowledge that seriously impacts my training! thanks for continuing to put out such top-notch content, seems like many people (me included) are benefiting from it. I bought a pair of rings a while ago and can confirm it's one of the best purchases I've made, super cheap and I use them almost every workout. I'm interested in getting my hands on some parallettes but it's tricky to know where to start looking since there's quite a lot of variety in size and material. I looked into making my own with pvc pipe, but annoyingly it works out to be way more expensive than just getting some online. If you (or anyone else reading this comment) have any recommendations for inexpensive but good quality parallettes, I'd love to hear them!

Thank you LV! I appreciate the feedback so much 🙏 I used homemade pvc pipes for parallettes for years and they were great. Titan has basically a copy of the Rogue ones I using here but at a significantly reduced price.

I use gravity fitness. Pretty good Edit: if you're from the UK they're a great company to buy equipment for working out at home. I've got the majority of their stuff and I can say it works and will last a long time. My pull up mate 2 is way better than their portable pull up bar though, but the gravity fitness one isn't bad either, I can still do everything I need to do.

Tomorrow I will go to the gym so I can use the pull-up bar and pull-up assist machine. I’m really looking forward to incorporating calisthenics into my overall workout routine. Maturing in training is to realize that the body only sees the stress imposed to it, regardless if it comes from an external weight increase or the inclination of a push up. I see tons of people going crazy about wether is better to go to the gym or doing calisthenics, while the reality is: as long as you train with diligence and effort you will have an hypertrophic response. The point is that there's no better way to train as an absolute, but there's sure a better way to train for your context and situation. Maybe you have the possibility to train into a well equipped gym or maybe you are on deployment and the only thing you have is calisthenics equipment, the point is: do what you can with what you have as long as you are consistent gains in strength, fitness and hypertrophy will follow.

Second all your suggestions. I also would add a couple of resistance bands. Also don't forget hand-eye coordination..I love simply throwing a tennis ball against a wall and catching it. At home (I hate gyms!) I have quite a lot of equipment..bought and home-made (weighted basketballs, ab wheel platforms on castors, Bulgarian training bag made from sand filled tyre). Currently I'm using an old rusty barbell (just the bar) as a surrogate steel mace...I'm really finding the movement patterns (e.g. swings) are beneficial for grip and functional strength.

djj! sounds like you've got everything you need! Yeah the narrow handles is an interesting point. It definetly could be a contributing factor. Wraps might be worth a try. I went through a phase several years ago where I HAD to lift with wraps because my wrists were so sore constantly. I used them while I needed them and then weened myself off of them just so I could strengthen that weakness.

It's really interesting how your videos always coincide with exactly what I'm wondering about in terms of working out at home. And I know the video is about best overall accessories for calisthenics, but in terms of conditioning equipment, I feel like slam balls are extremely underrated for conditioning as there are practically nothing else I can think of that are similarly compact but enable you to perform full body explosive movements with repetition. I already perform squats, stair climbs, and burpees for conditioning, but they are all quite lower body dominant with burpees as the exception, whereas slam balls allow for more upper body conditioning. What's your opinion on them?
@Kboges
@Kboges Жыл бұрын
Yeah great point! Slam balls are pretty awesome, and I'm also a fan of sledge hammer slams on a tire. My favorite condition exercises are hill sprints and BW squats, but no doubt slam balls offer an extremely unique demand that is hard to replicate.
