I'm 52 yrs old, I've changed career paths and going the PA route. I am almost done with my Bachelor's in Biology. It's been a long and painful journey working full time as a paramedic in the emergency department. I've also done volunteer ambulance. I go to school part-time and sometimes full time. I live alone and still struggle with bills and paying for school. I get financial aid but not enough. I manage to get a few classes each semester depending on how much I will have to pay out of pocket. I have 3 more classes to go and hoping to finish them in the Spring semester. I have no guidance as to how, where or when to apply for PA school. My GPA is not high maybe 2.80. I'm trying to fill out my CASPA at what point do I write letters to school?

A proper response is way to much for a youtube comment to do justice. I would make the suggestion to do a personal consultation with someone who can look at your personal situation and give you personalized advice. I do consultations myself (you can check my website for more info on that www.AdannaThePA.com) or you can also google others who offer that service. With all that being said, it sounds like you are going to be a-okay! Keep the pursuit strong and you can't go wrong. :)

@kalebalbert55074 жыл бұрын
Most colleges ask; but also understand that most PA schools require a LOR from a PA. So in this letter they can verify your time spent with a PA. Some school do not require it; however for your own edification I think it would be wise to get a minimum of 50 shadowing hours: but required hours vary.

@kalebalbert55074 жыл бұрын
absolutely it will. I am a junior year college student and this will help you. If you look on CASPA's website, you will see that CNA is an accepted PCE not just a HCE. HCE will count as half points whereas PCE counts as a full. So this will help you in the long run -- however i will suggest something like EMT or something with more hands-on experience in some stressful scenarios in which you can fully gauge if this is a direction you want your life to head in. However, that isn't for everyone, and it gives good insight into EM so I would think about that also.

So I'm having some difficulties on my end getting into PA school. I already have a B.S. in Health Sciences, I have about 500 hours volunteering for healthcare experience hours, about 1200-ish as a Derm MA, and about 120 hours as a phlebotomist (just got a part-time job as one, so that will increase quickly). I did a good amount of shadowing from doctors and PAs/NPs (I think I have about 50-69 hours?), and I have some good connections with my professors and providers that I've worked with to help me with the letters of recommendation. However, this is my 3rd cycle applying to PA school, and each cycle I've gotten fewer interviews. In my first cycle I had about 4 interview chances, the 2nd cycle I only had one, and this cycle I've been denied from almost all the schools I've applied to immediately. I'm still hoping that I can at least get an interview for PCOM as it's my dream school, but I'm just losing all hope in getting in. I'm tired and my depression just gets worse and worse every year because I'm never told what I can do to improve when I get rejected, they just repeat that I should do what I'm doing now. What can I do?

Great video! However I kind of disagree about the GRE. I was told by most of the schools I applied to that they only care about the minimum. That's not to say that it wont make you look amazing if you got a very high score. Some schools are looking to can the GRE all together. For me I had a very high GPA but a near minimum GRE and got interview offers from all 5 schools I applied. You are better off "lacking" or only achieving the minimum in the GRE over your GPA or patient care hours and experiences.

First off, what an awesome and informative video! I just wanted to let any high school seniors know that I am currently going through the interview process for PA school and have gone through things such as research, shadowing, PCE, and the GRE. I am part of an organization called MED-ED and we are a group of students from different medical backgrounds that come and speak to high school students from medically underserved areas about different careers in healthcare. I am obviously the PA student representative of the group but we have students that represent the M.D, D.O, P.A, OTD, R.N, and N.P professions. We are based in Pittsburgh and would love to come and speak to schools about medical-related careers but we also do Zoom meetings at any school in the country! We talk about the differences between professions such as responsibilities, education requirements, and compensation. On top of all of that, we walk you through step by step on the process to becoming a P.A or any other medical professional! If any of you are interested you can follow us on Instagram @ _med_ed and message us! we would love to hear from all our future healthcare professionals! Thanks for reading!

Yes, but be careful. It definitely helps if you plan on staying in the same state as your CC for your 4 year as some states, such as mine, have an agreement that guarantees your credits will all transfer. If you’re considering out of state, look at their transfer credit policies. I was lucky that my out of state college accepted ALL my applicable dual credit from high school, others won’t take any. Also, keep in mind the grades from CC probably won’t impact your 4 year school GPA so you won’t get that GPA boost from easy A’s from pre-reqs and electives

I'm really interested in becoming a PA. Right now I'm working on getting my BS in Health Science (I'm a junior) but I'm thinking about taking a break from working on my undergrad to do a two year degree in Respiratory Therapy. My plan is to work as an RRT for a few years and finish up my bachelors while I work. I think RRT would be useful to gain healthcare experience / patient care hrs and also to have a job with a living wage while I'm going through school (I'm 24 years old and have a child to support). Do you think this would be a good route?
@xxsam0917xx4 жыл бұрын
I can somewhat relate to this except I don't have a kid. I'm a licensed PTA (Physical Therapist Assistant), worked for 2 1/2 years and now working on my BS. I saved roughly $50k but I did work a lot with 2 jobs but I love what I do. I didn't work for a year (last year) and just focused on school, however, I have to go back to school for more patient care experience. Despite working for 2 1/2 years, they want to see consistency. I'm approaching 30 this year and I'll be finished with my Bachelor's in Health Science in Spring '22. I still have to retake anatomy 1 and 2 since it's been 10 years so really, I can't apply until 2023 maybe. And since I'll be 30+, I have to get everything done before 35 if I want to have kids. That's where I am right now lol

I would check with the schools you want to attend most of them want direct hands on experience (phlebotomy, PCT or CNA, MA..) I’m currently in school finishing up my Bachelors in Health sciences and my major requires me to complete a internship within a network of sponsors. Check and see if your school offers that because that will help with patient care hours and even get you connected with Med profs for LOR
@kalebalbert55074 жыл бұрын
PA schools dont care much about your major; and really its a double edged sword. If you choose a non-science based degree you have alot of classes that arent required ( biochemistry, biology, chemistry, organic, physics, microbiology, etc. ) however it helps show that you are a well rounded student and it would help you keep a higher GPA. If you choose a biology related degree, you have many difficult courses that could lower your GPA but give you a solid base of education for PA school and other difficulties in your profession. MY ADVICE: Pick a degree youll love and get the courses you need to apply. You want to enjoy what you learn about and have a good gpa too! As for the volunteer hours, yes they count as PCE. However, it would be in your interest of time to get some certification or apply for jobs that allow you to get some PCE while also getting paid ( coming from a guy who volunteering 500 hours as a PTT ). Hope this helps Natalia!

You DO NOT need to be certified in something to get health care experience. Veterinary Assistants and Medical Scribes don't require certification and most PA schools accept that experience.
@AdannaThePA5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment. Although most PA schools accept those as HCE most do not accept those as Patient Care experience which is what most of them are looking for. That is why its important to ask each school what they allow for their direct patient care experience because that is typically what weighs the most, not simple Healthcare experience.

I want to go to school for nursing then work as a nurse to get my health care/patient care experience, but someone told me you can’t apply for pa school with a nursing degree... is this true ?
@AdannaThePA5 жыл бұрын
That would be incorrect. You can apply to PA School with any degree, as long as you meet all the school prereq's

Hi Kendra, Being a nurse prior to getting into a PA program actually gives you an edge! I know several PA’s who were in the nursing field before entering the world of all things PA and they’ve all mentioned how much their professors enjoyed having them to add different perspectives within the learning environment. Watch the videos on KZbin where the creator of the online PA program at Yale discusses this topic. Educational diversity within these programs are essential. :)

I’m in the military and I have a year left. So I’d like to start school in the fall of 2020. (For my bachelors) the university in my home town recognizes military veterans for consideration and does NOT require healthcare experience before hand. What’s the easiest way to get healthcare experience while I’m getting my bachelors just to make my chances of getting into PA school even better? Also, what is the ideal amount of classes to take each semester that won’t overload your schedule and allow you to make the best grades possible?

Hey Adanna! Thank you so much for all of this information. I’m not sure if you’ve talked about it before, but can you share some insight on reapplying to PA schools. Should I wait a year in between? What should I look to improve on? Should I do a program between cycles? I’m still waiting on some schools this year but I also don’t want to waste this entire year just waiting if there’s something I can do that will improve my chances. Thank you 😊
@bryan-li5ib Жыл бұрын
This might be a late comment. You could get feedback from the schools that you have applied and can start working to improve whatever you were lacking while waiting for the new cycle.

Adanna, please help me out. I’m 31 years old, I graduated with a PolSci BA and a master’s degree also related to Political science, which means I have not taken any of the science classes I would need to get into this field. 1. How could I finish the prerequisite classes required in getting into the PA school at my situation? 2. In case of shadowing, do I just randomly contact some PAs and ask if I could do shadowing? 3. How long do you think I’d need to finish the PA in my case? If you have some more advices that could help me finish the PA programs the fastest way considering my situation, I’d appreciate it! Thanks a lot!

Is it okay to have a General A.A. degree from a community college and a bachelor's degree in Health Science to get into PA school? Or should I have an A.S. in something more specific?

It doesnt matter what your major or degree is in. As long as you do the prerequisites that the schools require you will be okay.

My undergrad overall GPA is shy of 3.0 while my science in above that. would it be recommended for me to take classes over, look into a master's/postbacc, or just focus solely on clinical hours?
@kalebalbert55074 жыл бұрын
I would increase my GRE score and take some post bacc. Clincal hours are good and will help your application greatly, but you need to get the minimum requirements for them to see that!

Another question is it crazy i notice that not all 27 week programs are created equal (didactic year wise) , I seen one college had there Didactic year have 21 classes in total spread throughout 5 semesters where some colleges have like 25-30 classes spread throughput 3-4 semesters so i figure seems i cant imagine taking over 5 classes during a semester would it be smart to include this in my college search ?

Hey I seen another video saying your bachelors doesn't need to be in the medical field you'll just need to do some classes prerequisites to get in as a pa. How much of a factor is the being an emt or cna thing? It's tied to what kind of hours? volunteer hours are required during pa school or to just even be considered?

I wanted to know how the science GPA is calculated. Is it only calculating the GPA for the prerequisite courses (such as Statistics, general microbiology, Anatomy and physiology I and II, introduction to psychology or developmental psychology, general chemistry or organic chemistry or biochemistry) required to enter the program or is it my overall science GPA including the prerequisite courses and courses such as psychics, introduction to biology, cellular and molecular biology, genetics, etc?
