Hello seeking help. I have these AMP Research on my 2011 Toyota Prerunner Tacoma. Recently they won’t drop and rise as they are supposed to. They are out off warranty as a result company won’t provide any information on maintenance of these such as calibration or proper lubrication if needed. If you have any information that can help it would be highly appreciated.

J.R. I just had these installed on my truck. I am now concerned because you said you shouldn't use car washes that spray under the vehicle because I live in Greater Cincinnati and they use salt on the roads and I NEED to use the under body wash at the car washes to prevent rust. What do you recommend?
@thesinistercamaro3 жыл бұрын
Hey! Thanks for reaching out. So, I've taken taken my truck through one of those car washes once and that was three years ago when I went to the beach. No issues since. The main thing is that you don't want that pressure shooting directly at the motor. You can spray on it, around it, etc. Just don't win it directly at the motor under the truck. It's tucked in there pretty well and the motor is the silver bullet looking canister on the contraption I pointed to in the video. You can wrap a grocery bag around it with something like a rubber band or twist tie to seal it before a underbody wash if you want to be extra careful. I power wash mine at home and as long as I don't spray directly in it, no issues. My installer and the dealer told me that when I got mine installed. It's more rugged and durable than it sounds, but to avoid issues, I wanted to make sure I put it in there as other owners didn't know either. Overall, enjoy the power steps. It's been one of the best investments on my truck so far.

The Sinister Camaro Thanks J.R. I am flying a helicopter from a tuna boat in the Pacific, so I won’t see my truck until next spring. There are also the AMP Extreme version of the POWERSTEP’s designed for off roading & muddin’ trucks & Jeeps. Maybe that ones more resistant to power washing? I will take your advice. Thank you. 🐬🚁

@@thesinistercamaro www.amp-research.com/powerstep-xtreme-running-board PowerStep™ Xtreme is for extreme conditions for those owners who live and work in challenging environments. Made specifically for extreme environments, sub-zero winters, mud caked rockers; AMP Research PowerStep™ Xtreme is designed to hold up to the extreme because of its dual motors. It is built extra powerful to hold up to the demands.
@thesinistercamaro3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, those are the ones I saw before making this video. So, does it have dual motors on both sides of the truck or one for the driver side and one for the passenger? Hopefully, everything is sealed tighter so you won't have those issues with the motors going out because of the pressure washing. Very interesting.
@Branspacejams232 жыл бұрын
So does the motor hold them in place? Or if the motor goes out will they hang down?
@thesinistercamaro2 жыл бұрын
Great question! I believe the steps can get stuck up/down/halfway, so basically any position depending on the issue. It seems they sort of lock in a position, so once they stop, they stop and stay. I found this website helps troubleshoot some issues you might run into. I haven't had any of the issues to this day, but if you see them it could help to know how to resolve. Hope this helps. www.iwflsports.com/amp-research-power-step-problems/

I have a 2014 Silverado with these amp steps. Every door works fine except for driver side rear door. When I first open the door the step drops. When it fully opens the step goes back up. Is there a sensor issue somewhere or what tells the steps to go up and down?
@thesinistercamaro2 жыл бұрын
Great question. Unfortunately, I wasn't there for the install and the shop ordered the kit for me, so I didn't get to see the install myself to better understand. Thinking like a programmer, there has to be a sensor of some sort that tells it when the door is closed to closed the steps and open to open. I think you are def into something with that. I will have to go to my truck after work to see if I can find a sensor in the door jam. If there is, make sure to clean it for that door to see if it will be an easy fix. If it doesn't, then maybe these troubleshooting guides can help I have linked below. Worst case, e-mail or call Amp directly with the contact info below and I bet they will be able to assist you as well. Will update if I find out anything else. They are designed to stop if they get in any kind of bind. Example: if you want the step to stay down, put your foot on the deployed step and shut the door. It will start to operate then stop with the resistance applied by your foot.

My driver side power step doesn't go down. Any tips on how I can make it work?
@thesinistercamaro2 жыл бұрын
4 door or 2 door? If 4 door, is it one door or both? There is a collection of fuses on top of battery with 4 posts under a plastic sheets. Check the fuses there as there or a few to make sure they are not blown. I replaced my battery in the truck a month ago and this happened to me. Easy fix. If fuses are good, might be your door sensor or actuator. There is a plug under your dash like a 30 pins sensor looking connector you can unplug for a few hours and plug back it to see if it resets. You can also test a pin in that connector (can't remember which pin) with a tester to see if it is getting power. If it is not, might be the "brain" of the system. Hope these help.

Both doors
@thesinistercamaro2 жыл бұрын
Fuses would be first (I have one for the power, one in the plastic housing on top of the battery, and then fuses for the posts under the plastic housing as well). Next, ODB senser under the dash unplug for a couple hours and plug back in. Make sure it is grounded well behind the module (firewall). See if the sensors are getting power in the doors if you can get to them (I don't see them in mine, so my installers may have hidden them a little better). Test the pins the ODB sensor goes into to see if it is getting power/notice from the control module (brain). Test the control module to make sure it is getting power. If all that fails, may need a new control module and amp should be able to help with that. They have a 3 and 5 year warranty depending on the kit you have. They also have a warranty section to help get you squared away with questions as well if needed. Amp-research.com/warranty-information

If they are all not going down, check the fuses for them. They are located in a box over the battery on my 2016. Had to remove the small cross bar to get the plastic top off. Check all the fuses in there as I had a friend who had one go out too. If that is not the case, go to who installed them (aftermarket shop or dealer) and let them know as it should still be under warranty with that new of a vehicle. Worst case, the "brain" needs to be replaced. If it is certain doors, check sensors on the doors. If you hear the motor trying to pull them out on one side, it maybe be a faulty actuator motor on that side. Hope these help.

Sounds like the sensors are working as it is trying to move it. Check to make sure something is not holding it like a branch or something caught in the elbows of the folds to be safe. If that's not the case, the motor may need to be replaced. I would contact amp research (or have the company that installed/sold it to you) and it should be covered under the warranty for parts if you are still in the warranty period.

If you pressure wash directly on the motor, it could cause failure. I've driven my through puddles, standing water, etc and it's been fine. @thesinistercamaro3 жыл бұрын
Talking about the delay from closing the door to when they go back up under the truck? That's a safety feature. So, if one door on that side closes and the other opens, it's already out and ready. It's just a second or two, no biggie. When you open the door, they retract back out instantly. I've never ran into an issue with it being too slow either way.

So wait, let me get this straight... These all weather power steps have an exposed motor that can't get wet. These are off road vehicles, they're made to go through water up to like 30 inches. When it rains, the underside is assaulted with water, how exactly did AMP think this was acceptable? What a stupid design. Fucking pass.

I believe the warning is more about super high pressure washer nozzles spraying directly into that area but yeah, you would think there wouldn't be much of a weak point considering it sits under the truck. @thesinistercamaro2 жыл бұрын
Before my Dad passed, he needed help getting around. The steps helped him get up along with the handles in the truck to help pull himself up. The real challenge would simply be the height of the truck itself if anything. I think the steps actually helped him out more to get in and out. I wouldn't recommend a lifted truck for the elderly at all as it would be more of a burden.
