I am the exact person you are talking about in this video!!! Someone lied to me about the condition a car i bought and now i need a new engine. I was looking at these JDM 20jx motors. YOURE RIGHT! Every engine selller lies to you about these engines being plug and play. I just wanna say, i REALLY appreciate this video… and if anyone wants to help out someone who is new to the subaru community (and immediately wants out) drop me a line.

Hello I just want to share with you my experience with EJ20X. I have 2011 STI JDM with VF49 turbo. Due to engine failure, I had to swap my block with the ej20X as it's the only and the best option I had here in Jordan. We swapped the long block and changed the pistons to a new set of low compression CP to pistons, CR went from 9.4 to around 8.8. We opened the VF49 boost to 22 psi and used 95 Octane gasoline (middle east standards). On Mustang dyno we got 300whp and 450 wheel n.m torque. (900 meter above see level in the city of Amman and it was winter season). The car has turbo back exhaust including downpipe and SPT duel mufflers, K&N cold air intake, Aeromotive fuel pressure regulator, stock STI injectors. Worth to mention that the ej20x comes with 12mm oil pump, while the EJ20 version 10 STI comes with 11mm oil pump in stock. The thickness of the cylinder walls/liners in the ej20x (open deck) is 11mm (as I remember) and the ej20 version 10 (semi open deck) around 13mm! I think the US ej25 sti is less than 11mm but I'm not sure. The car runs great since a year, it has amazing acceleration due to the high torque, and the fuel consumption is around 16-17 mpg in city.

Sup guys i thought I'd chime in. I have a 12 STi with 102k when the motor finally went in March this year. Did some research and got a 20Y with 25k miles. These engines are compatible best with the 08-21 STi since those are the only dual avcs platforms in the States. As far as gaskets go, they use the same ones as the oem STi as well as water pumps for the 20Y. The 20X uses the 255 water pumps. The 20Y comes with an oil cooler just like the 257s. I switched over my STi parts to this engine and got it tuned. It gets amazing mpg and the power is really good. I recommend this swap. If you do have a single avcs car, you can still do this swap. You will need to set the exhaust cams two teeth back for better low end torque on the intake cams and leave the driver side avcs unplugged. And as well get tuned. They're a good alternative for a fun daily with bolt ons :) these engines share a similar bottem end to the 205s with more rigidity. A lot of folks believe u have to spend 12k for a swap but that isn't entirely true. I've spent personally 4k and i couldn't be happier. My engine costed me 1200 from LAJDM. Recommend them highly because they have a lot of low mileage engines for 12-1400. 30k miles i believe.

There is aftermarket turbos for that engine. Like Mamba or Kinugawa. Runners are smaller than sti twinscroll, so they spool better but not sacrifising power. Some guy in romraider or nasioc forums found solution to ex avcs cam. Just put jdm ecu and pulled extra wires to avcs solenoids and sensors.

I swapped my '06 Baja turbo manual with a 20Y bc it blew a ringland and I was broke and needed a motor. Plus, the 20Y was only $1K vs the 255/7 which was a ridiculous $6K. I will say, overall, it was a terrible idea for a Baja due the weight of the vehicle & the lack of torque. But, it was cheap and I was willing to spend the time on it. In a 04-06 Baja Turbo, the 04-06 EJ20X/Y swaps right in with only the coolant sensor needing to be swapped. Everything bolts in and hooks right up to the factory harness. I did make sure I got a Downpipe flange with the motor, that I needed to be weld onto the existing HKS downpipe I had. After everything was bolted up and hooked up to the harness, it fired right up and ran. It's true that it has VERY LITTLE TORQUE! The tuner I paid to tune it had no idea what they were doing, so it ran like crap. I then got my own Cobb tuning license and started on my journey. I somewhat solved the lack of torque by adding 7+ degrees of AVCS on the intake cam side in the low rpm range. I did not retard the exhaust cam gear 1 tooth to increase the overlap, but I may in the future. I did need to lower the WOT timing, a lot, and lower the Tip In bc it was way too rich. But overall, with those minor tuning adjustments to the stock motor, on an unplugged exhaust AVCS, it has lackluster torque and makes an estimated 250ish hp at the crank. Good enough for now, but not good enough forever. FYI.

my 04 Sti had crankshaft failure due to what i believe was a warn out and damaged harmonic damper installed by an engine builder. (Blouch 18g, id1000s) i did a ton of research and decided on a 20x as a stop gap. ive never done a swap or pulled an engine on a Subaru before but im pretty inclined. I striped the 2.0 down to a long block and did a timing kit, pulled the exhaust back two teeth and just swapped everything from the 257. On 100 octane they had very similar peak hp, the 20x suffered a few 100 rpms in spool and about 60 ftlbs of peak torque. On Washington state 92 octane the timing needs pulled hard and it lost a fair amount of power. 20%ish . I put in on meth injection and it loves it. Im happy for the price , but i still prefer the 257 power .

@@tjflynn7509 when I swapped my EJ20X/Y I used all of the sensors that were already attached to the JDM engine I purchased. Believe it or not, a lot of the sensors were actually the same as the US spec sensors. Remember, JDM and USDM vehicles are built on the same electronic architecture, so the sensors often will have the same part number with a different trailing letter. When I broke an exhaust AVCS solenoid, I used one from an 08-14 USDM STi (same part number with different letter) and had absolutely no issues whatsoever with the USDM part on a JDM ecu.

1. The jdm ej20 (x auto trans) (y manual trans) came in the legacy bp5. 2. The 05-07 ej20x came with the vf38 twin scroll journal bearing, these are junk. They are the equivalent of the td04. The 07-09 came with the vf36 twin scroll ball bearing, the equivalent of the vf34 single scroll ball bearing. 3. All ej20x/y no matter what year come with dual cross drilled crankshafts as standard issue. 4. The 05-07 come with cast flat top pistons for higher CR. The 07-09 come with hybrid pistons with a forged crown and cast skirt. 5. The ej20x/y come with z20 cylinder heads. They have massive intake ports. Much bigger then any s20, b25, d25 heads I’ve seen. 6. I can get a ej20x shipped to my house for $800-1000. Thanks flatiron syndicate for making all the great content. Not sure this podcast is as clear and concise as you wanted it to be :) I've got an 06 Legacy Limited GT wagon, yep, bad ringland cyl 4. I have 2 options, one is the EJ20X (I'm an auto), or an OEM EJ257 short block, with all my EJ255 stuff moved over. Obviously the EJ20x drop out is cheaper and has a bunch of spare parts if something is needed, where as the new short block, is well, just that, and with a new short block, you should get the heads decked at a minimum, but at 135K miles, maybe you consider redoing the heads, $1500, so we are $2K short block $1500 rebuilt heads. Then you have to consider the lines, hoses and other pieces that will be needed that aren't quite up to snuff on a 135K mile engine.... So the EJ20X with 35kish miles at $800-$1200..... i can see why folks lean towards the 20x/y when their legacy GT finally shits the bed. But I still haven't found a single source that makes it clearer than mud, on how to do that conversion. Especially in CA where you have smog laws (no comments about BS CARB).

Left the ej20x coils, fuel injectors tho. Ej20x was auto, ej20y is manual. This is important if you use the ej20x on a 5spd swap. I'm a 5spd so had to swap flywheel and clutch. Took out the tgv as well and deleted it. Made sure to take all connectors were sealed and tied off as they can cause phantom knock. Needs the af, timing and boost targets all tuned to get it perfect but it runs and drives fine around town. Running a -2° timing on my stock map to reduce detonation risk until It hits the and dyno and tuned out. Works well but you have to know what you are working with for sure.

I recently swapped a ej20x into my 2013 wrx, right now it's difficult to say how the engine will run because it's not tuned yet. On ej255 tune, the engine has horrible bottom end because the exhaust AVCS isn't plugged in. but is comparable at the top end, but my feedback knock is out of control, so I can't say for sure how it will perform. The swapped over all the dressings from my ej255. But for the price, around 1200, it's amazing, you get the longblock, turbo and dressings, you can sell the vf38 I really wish I knew more and had money when I was doing this. I would have kept my ej255 heads but I didn't know if they were messed up or not and I would have gotten an IAG short block. Can I hybrid swap these heads with an IAG short block?

Thanks for your question. I haven't seen any standalone controllers for the AVCS. There is a lot involved in how those move, and since engine mapping is a big part of that, I don't think that you could really separate the cam phasing from the ECU mapping. At that point, you would really need a standalone ECU that could do everything that you need. Thanks for watching and Stay Tuned!

Surprised that there is not a solution that mimics what the ecu does. My (elementary) understanding is that there is a 15° swing both ways on the exhaust side for a total of 30°. My ej20x swapped auto lgt is lazy on the low end like acceleration from a stop. Otherwise it ok to drive. Stock ecu reflashed with the jdm 20x map and street tuned. My question is, if x value commanded from the ecu generates y result in degrees of advance then why can I not use a device to piggyback control these exhaust cam phasers?

Bro. I don’t understand what you mean by no aftermarket turbo options. What I gathered from this video is that if you do the 20x/y swap which I’m going to do is run a standalone ECU, e85 with an ewg. People are driving these cars with this swap and have been for years. With all your knowledge I just don’t understand how you’re so skeptical of this swap. I’m not trying to be disrespectful in any way I’m just very curious as to why you say a lot of this stuff is near impossible or not anywhere near the effort when the long block itself with 20-50k miles on it can be had for 4k less than an ej255 with 90k on it. Like my brain is hurting rn

I have a ej20x in my 05 legacy gt I liked the ej255 in my other 05 legacy gt wagon a bit more but the ej20x doesn't have the avcs hooked up so it feels a bit weird

Thanks for the comment. Yes, with the AVCS not connected or working, the engine will not be working at its full potential. Thanks for watching and Stay Tuned!

Bit late to the party! But, one thing that I didn't hear mentioned is that while these engines are really good in stock form, but they really don't have much unused potential without serious work- mine, completely stock engine with some breathing aids, made 245 at the wheels on 99, and the drivability is just superb- the power comes in early and runs late. It's genuinely one of the best stock ejs there is, never mind one from 2003. Buuut, that's because it's all carefully engineered to work great standard and not really to be messed with, they got a lot out of it and left little on the shelf. So apart from teh lack of bolt-on-ability because of the bloody stupid unique turbo flange etc, it's just not an engine that you can stab with boost and get good results. 300 is generally considered to be the sensible limit, 325 if you're bold.

The ej20x motor seems to bring the main O2 sensor at the beginning section of the down pipe vs the usdm models the O2 sensor is on the up pipe. If I were to do this swap and keep the double chamber jdm exhaust manifold and have the O2 sensor on the down pipe, would this affect the proper operation of my car? Btw, I disabled exhaust AVCS and kept the usdm engine harness and ECU.

So basically it was labelled x to identify the legacy gt with automatic transmission with twins roll vf38... The y is the legacy manual transmission with a vf45 twin scroll

So I still have my cams from my old blown engine, should I move the exhaust cam over to the EJ20x? What differeneces will I see? I have been reading about retarding the teeth on the exhaust pulley

Thanks for your question. Switching over to a non-AVCS cam and non-AVCS cam gears may reduce some of the complexity. Take a look at our video talking about swapping an EJ25 into an EJ20 WRX where we cover disabling AVCS. Here is a link to that: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bIndoKOdlt6qbcU Hope that helps and Stay Tuned!

You guys gotta learn something about engines. And definitely learn about variable cam systems. And you can run wires and the usdm pcm will operate the exhaust solenoids.

Hi hello how's it going im from Maryland and I have a 2005 Forester XT with the 4EAT trans and I had a question about exhaust cam gear position. so are you saying its best to retard the exhaust cam gear 7 degrees or 2 teeth or is it best to remove the exhaust AVCS gear. also if removed could you replace with with an EJ25 exhaust non AVCS cam gear so that the motor runs identically to a USDM EJ
@FlatironsTuning

Thanks for your question. No. I would say the best approach would be to replace the AVCS cams with non-AVCS cams if you aren't running the AVCS, and then use the non-AVCS cam pulleys on those cams. There are some in the comments here that have mentioned changing the tooth orientation on the exhaust cam pulleys, but we can't speak to that from experience. I hope that helps and Stay Tuned!

I just found this and I still have questions on what I have going on. I bought a 2017 sti from a used dealership knowing the engine had been swapped. After looking and digging I now know the transmission and the rest of the driveline has been swapped also. It has a dual avcs ej20 engine but im not sure which one since you can't read the sticker on the timing cover and I can't pull it apart as it's my daily. It has what I believe everything from the intake up from the sti. I could really use some help on identifying what I have

I would love to talk with you about your sti if you still have it/learned more about it. I’m in a very similar boat, 2008 WRX sedan, ej20x swap, usdm 6 speed. Fully built engine, bigger turbo, e85 conversion, map tuned, all of the fun stuff…. But I’m trying to do all the maintenance, upkeep and overall refresh and constantly researching to figure out what parts I need😅 Also doesn’t help that I’m a complete Subaru newbie.
