Everything You Need To Know About Big Blue Tree Collards

This video introduces the Big Blue Tree Collard and how you can grow it successfully in your garden. This tree collard variety was introduced in 2020 by Sequoiah at Project Tree Collard and is a long-lived perennial tree collard that grows 3-5 feet tall. It flowers in the spring, but remains productive year round. ‪@projecttreecollard‬ believes that every home garden or homestead in temperate climates should have some tree collard plants. You only plant them once and they produce abundant greens as animal fodder or for human consumption for many years to come. Tree collards (Brassica oleracea var. acephala) are members of the brassica family. They are also known as Tree Kale or Tree Cabbage. Their relatives include traditional collards, kale, broccoli, cabbage, brussels sprouts, kohlrabi, and cauliflower. However, unlike most of its relatives, tree collards are perennial. This means that, like a fruit tree or rose bush, they will continue to grow and produce year after year and without the need for planting new seeds or seedlings every year like traditional collards and kale. Tree collards are hardy to about 20° F (-7° c) and in mild climates have been known to live for up to twenty years! They are closely related to other perennial collard varieties grown in Mediterranean, Africa, the Americas, and other countries. Tree Collards are very nutritious. They are high in Vitamins B1, B2, B9, C, and beta-Carotene and are also a great source of fiber.

I had to come in and report a success! I have a Big Blue Tree Collard growing in my front yard! It is 3 inches tall and has 4 leaves. We are so excited! Now, to plant more of the seeds we got from you!

My tree kale was getting ravaged by bugs. I have a nuisance golden rain tree that throws seeds all over and I use it for chop n drop. Nothing eats this tree except the leaf cutter bee. So I shredded the leaves off the branches and sprinkled them around the kale (hoping to confuse the bugs?) and glory to be. The kale are lush in 2 weeks. I have photos.

I have those big green worms (caterpillars) on my collards. I have been trying to look thru each plant while I harvest and clean off those little critters. I will have to try this new variety for sure!

Thank you for this video. I purchased two tree collards from you earlier this year. My purple is about 6’ tall and the other one is about 4’ tall. I also purchased three Marriott rooting stems, one didn’t make it and the others are doing great

My blue collar tree has very large leaves. How do I get it to bush out? I will order the new ones you just showed. I’m having a problem with the white moth. What can I use to keep them away? @@wandasinger7713 you need to cut the top off to get them to bush out. Video coming soon! Cabbage moths can only be physically blocked by covering the plant (with no gaps or holes) with fine mesh or agribon (remay) fabric cloth

Its hard for me to know since I haven't heard from any one growing them in Jamaica. My best guess is the purple ones because they do well in Hawaii and Florida.

All the stems on my tree collards are very spindly and weak looking.I had 8 plants and only 3has survived. 1outside and 2in pots. I’m never going to buy any more. To hard to grow in my Texas garden.

I also live in Texas 8b. I tried several times to get cuttings to do well. I found that when I waited til fall to order the cuttings they did much, much better. Trying it in the spring just did not work for me. They would root and grow for a while then whither away in the heat and humidity. Also, growing Merritt collards from seeds is very easy. They also do better when I start them in Sept in small pots then set them out in the garden in early November. Don't give up!

I have no probem with mine. You have to keep them in shade or part shade..
